Car review in a few | 2019 Suzuki Jimny - bafflingly brilliant

The 2019 Suzuki Jimny is without doubt the best small 4x4 you can buy - assuming you're a farmer. If you're not, and you're looking for a left field little runabout, the compromises may be too great.

I'm from South Africa, we know that this car for what it is will be expensive, but people are already queuing up to buy the thing... if you've ever owned a Jimny of any era it becomes hard to drive any other brand of vehicle. As for offroading, this thing is unstoppable, I took mine for a 4000km trip through Botswana and never got stuck once, only about 1000km of that trip was on actual roads. Whereas a lot of the larger 4x4's we saw bogged down and having to dig themselves out of deep sand...

Wow! A small car with character in 2018! Who would have thought? If Suzuki had completely changed the design and totally modernised it, would current owners actually want to buy it? I think not! I think this is great fun. If you were always driving on motorways then you may not want it but for town and driving through snowdrifts it’s perfect! Another great review from the big guy. 😁

My first suzuki was 1988 Samurai, 2nd was 1993 vitara, 3rd 2015 jimny. This will be my 4th suzuki., jimny's are very fun to drive

A a farmer, this is what we need. All people I know I have it, love it simplicity and you can attach a small trailer and it is a great farming and hunting go-everywhere off-roader. Make it a favour, do not give him a city life, he will get depressed a a Belgium sheperd dog in a flat, Jimny needs adventure!.

When I worked in the middle east before the proper roads were built, people LOVED this type of little 4 x 4 as it was light and didn't sink in the sand like the bigger ones. Boaties take note :-)

Love this review. There is this common misconception that buyers get "to choose to buy a Jimny"... That is not the case. You don't get to choose to a Jimny. A Jimny chooses you! And if the Jimny doesn't tick all your boring econo-box criteria, then bugger right off. It will happily skip past you and be off with the next buyer that has a pressing sense of adventure and wanderlust.

Absolutely love everything about the new Jimny SZ5 , if anyone is familiar with to driving the Land Rover Defender ,they will understand The things the Jimny does that reviewers would put down as negatives, like the steering etc etc , I personally would 100% buy one no probs , cracking wee tough and very rugged Oldskool looking motor that actually looks like a 4X4 😎👍

Driving around a big van is fun. I used to do just that as a job, in a Renault Trafic, a big turbo diesel box with 4 wheels at each corner. I think it was actually just a very large old school mini, really. So much fun.

I'd buy one in a heart beat! It's life manifest in the form of a vehicle - warts and all. It reminds me of my Citroen in a very perverse way. So many attributes and totally fit for purpose - in spite of the flaws. You either love vehicles like this, or you don't understand them....

Having owned x3 Suzuki's including a 1000cc tin top with Inclinometer, a sj1000 soft top & a 53 Jimny this is like a Rolls Royce in comparison. They are like Marmite, they do exactly what it says on the tin. Absolutely brilliant off road, only stuck once in 30 years when vacuum tubes failed on Jimny (therefore no FWD on the 4WD) They go everywhere snow ice mud slush good set of Michelins drive as main vehicle instead of Navara cos nothing stops it. On road could have always had a 1500/1600 petrol/diesel and a 6th gear for motorway cruising & a bit better MPG. Cheap to pickup (30MPG?) tiny park anywhere, they could do with underbody anti rust treatment (waxoyl etc. from new) But would I buy another tommorrow you bet. Thanks for vid. Heard the price might be £15700-£18000 ouch that might hurt and only 1000 in UK next year.

Not true sadly. It got bad ratings for other sections as well.. from the NCAP PDF downloaded from their site: "In the frontal offset test, there was insufficient pressure in the driver's airbag to prevent it from 'bottoming out', allowing the head to contact the steering wheel. The score for the head was penalised for the behaviour of the airbag and the displacement of the steering wheel, and protection for this part of the body was rated as marginal. The passenger compartment was extensively deformed in the offset test, especially around the door-frame and the score for the driver's chest was penalised for this unstable collapse. Combined with marginal dummy readings, protection for this body area was rated as weak. Although dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger, structures in the instrument panel and dashboard were thought to pose a risk of injury to occupants of different sizes, and protection was rated as marginal. In the full-width, rigid-barrier impact protection of the head of the rear passenger dummy was rated as weak, based on dummy readings during the test and protection of the chest of both driver and rear passenger was marginal. Tests on the front seats and head restraints showed marginal protection against whiplash injury in a rear impact. A geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated good protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds, typical of city driving, at which many whiplash injuries are caused. However, the Jimny did not qualify for these points as Euro NCAP requires good head restraint performance as a pre-requisite for AEB points."

I really enjoyed driving it through town, didn't end up taking it on a motorway though. I thought the steering was really smooth and the visibility was amazing. Can't wait to test off-road as well. This is compared to the 2014 Rav4 I drove on the same day which was clunky, big and had terrible visibility. Not dissing the Rav, just saying that the Jimny isn't as bad for general use as people are making it out to be, and functions perfectly fine for a personal vehicle.

I have a Suzuki and Yes I use it (legally) off road, I was also one of the few that was still mobile last winter. I dont get why it has to compete with the usual slew of cr*p suv cars around. If you want an suv for the school run and god knows why you would there are plenty of (fake) 4x4`s to choose from. Its like buying a bus and then complaining its awkward to park.These are awesome lightweight cars to get you where you want to go and Suzuki shouldn't need to apologise for that. They are always at the top- of the reliability surveys and not down the bottom consistently (Land Rover). Cheap to run and well built

Best review I have seen so far on this little demon. As a current older model owner, I am very much in the 'love it because of the flaws' camp and will definitely be putting my name down for one. I tend to be a sole passenger most of the time and regularly need 'proper' off road capability, so it ticks just about all the boxes. The added bonus of being able to fold the drivers seat down to form a flat sleeping platform makes it perfect for some of my country sports applications as well

I'm curious if the parts under the hood are shared by any of their other models. With this being an off road vehicle you're going to want spare parts that are actually accessible. Unlike the 96 model.

Today little Jimny is introduced in Germany. So up to the dealer and have a look. What a shame! the car is nice, quite well built and everyone fell in love with the friendly "face". #Metoo ... So a quick step inside and see how the story continues. Chat with the sales guy: "Do not expect to get one before 10 months of waiting, they are sold out." On the driver's seat I sat. Disappointed I was. Not for quality reasons but for reasons of lack of space. the width is too tiny, I am constantly rubbing my shoulder/arm/elbow on the door panel. This is not acceptable for me so unfortunately the little Jimny is "out". I am 6ft 2,5" and have 88 kgs with slender shape - no worries about leg- oder headroom just that half-inch of interior width is missing. It's a real shame ...

Help me out here. Why doesn't anyone complain about the integrated tail lights in the rear bumper? Am I the only one who is already concerned about the cost of having them repaired all the time? When parking in the city, those lamps will be broken constantly. When driving off-road you need a solid bumper for manuvering. If you can't hit a rock without splintering glass, your car is not properly designed for off-roading. It's called a bumper for a reason. And furthermore, when driving in dense traffic, low hanging lights is a serious safety hazard.

Prices just released 21 Nov 2018, New Jimny (SZ4 manual) starts at £15,499 excluding road tax. Wonder if Honest John knows how much it would have cost SUZUKI spending it on the engine and/or other components to get the 154 g/km CO2 (manual) figure down to 150 g/km CO2. Just that extra 4 g/km CO2. would have saved the punter from paying a whopping £515 First Year road tax, they'd have got it for £205 instead, SAVING £310. About £100?, SUZUKI didn't want to spend £100 to save the punter £310, cause it would have been out of their end. SUZUKI couldn't care less, over priced it to start with, built up the cult then morphed it into the snob value. Customers are being taken for mugs, but they've been sucked in ages ago. not as bad as the Tesla Fan Boys, but not far off it. Time was SUZUKI'S were value for money, they could have done this car a lot cheaper than that, without a lot of the expensive stuff that's on it, have that on the base model as extra's and bring out 3 versions instead, the base version the SZ3 for £11,999 for the enthusiasts, to mod up, adding to it when they can afford. All 3 versions could have sat side by side, but no SUZUKI went for the 'baby G wagon' snob value. The cold clinical minds of the SUZUKI bosses, in private laughing at Johnny Englisher for the Mugs they think we are.
