It’s amazing how Suzuki has had to step back to go forward. The decision to imitate the old SJ413 / Samurai was a good call. Like the simple solution of placing taillights in the bumper to increase space and the old school grill with traditional 7” round headlights, great design. I still don’t think anything can compare with the legendary Samurai, but this is good to see.

@CarObsession6 жыл бұрын
Hi Randy, thanks for watching. It's no Lotus Elise, but it may as well be when you compare it to the last model. The handling is decent for what the car is, but if you were to compare to it to you more 'traditional' SUV, I'm sure you'd find it lacking. However, the Jimny is a bit of an anomaly in the car market, therefore it needs to be judged in a different manner.

Completely agree with the other positive reviews. Suzuki have set out with a very clear brief and absolutely nailed it. Like you, I wouldn't buy this car, but I do love its functionality. A friend of mine had an old battered white Jimni many years ago; it had the speed of a slug and rattled like crazy. He loved that car, taking it off road with absolute glee. This car looks so great I would happily do 60mph on a motorway in this if I needed to do a long journey. Most will buy this for its looks and capability if required, but will probably be used on the road by most buyers. If I move somewhere a bit more rural then maybe it would be a good car to own for getting out and about. As for off-roading in them, lets be honest, most will be bought on PCP deals, so you are not going to risk damaging it unless you are a serious green laner, paying cash and they will probably change a few bits and pieces as well such as the tyres and fit a snorkel etc.

Only problem for me is the gearing. Revs too high at 70mph. Unless you live near rural areas that you wish to explore off road, a long journey would be very tiring. I had the same problem with a Panda 4x4 diesel. Great car but nearly 4000 revs at 70! Sounded like it was going to fall apart.

@@oddities-whatnot you do not know suzuki engines. Their rev sound is more than acceptable (i personally define it lovely) in the whole rpm range. Thanks very much for this review. I have an 07 plate Mk3 and had from almost new and jump back and forwards between that and a BMW 330d M Sport. Given the vast difference in power and handling between each, the Jimny is not that bad, I just go much slower. We live 2 miles from a village on small back roads and without Jimny we would have had many days most years of going nowhere. I regular take it across fields for shooting, never once got stuck. Spec on the SZ5 looks an easy win for me over the SZ4; but not seen any mention yet on the quality of the radio/music player and speaker set up, did you try it out ? Overall mine has been a perfect second car, not really ever used on motorways and clearly pointless for me but perfect for country roads and farms.

@CarObsession5 жыл бұрын
There were points where I did have them outside, but because it's not a natural technique for me (I do little off-roading) I found myself placing them back inside out of habit. To be fair, I did take the piss out of myself for doing it in the off-road edit of this video. Also, one or two more experienced (than me) viewers have said that a modern SUV like this wouldn't really snap its steering wheel as much as older cars. Thanks for watching 👍
@RoadRunnerLaser5 жыл бұрын
Car Obsession - I'm in the process of watching the off-road edit and I did note that you had picked up on that bad habit and even mentioned it at the beginning of the briefing (I actually came back to edit my original comment to acknowledge that fact and saw that you had responded). Yeah, it's probably less risky these days in modern cars but still a habit you'd want to try to avoid if spending time off-road. We have the Grand Vitara and there are times I can feel the wheel snap as the front wheels drop into a rut or between rocks, for example. I think Suzuki have played a blinder with the new Jimny. They've really managed to keep to the design philosophy of producing a small, cheap, and capable off-roader whilst improving on its on-road characteristics. Sadly, they didn't keep to the ethos of the Grand Vitara with their new models and have turned it into a PoS pavement princess instead of the off-road workhorse it always used to be. I'm not quite sure what we're going to do when our current one finally gives up the ghost. The Jimny is just a little bit too small for our needs. BTW - I think you mean "... wouldn't really snap...", don't you?
@CarObsession5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I meant 'wouldn't'; I was replying whilst doing a few things at once 🙈I'm not an experienced off-road driver and I'll be the first to admit that, so there will be a few signs that I'm a bit of a novice at this sort of thing. However, I'd argue that's testament to the Jimny that even an off-roading numpty like me can cover ground on the muddy stuff and feel confident. Sure, as some have said, it wasn't the most gruelling off-road trail, but I'd like to see the average family hatchback do that.
@RoadRunnerLaser5 жыл бұрын
Car Obsession - I agree. Not the toughest of courses. I guess that they wanted a course where a complete novice could get a taster without too much risk. I've had to come back and rescue a Freelander on a far less challenging run - It was just a grassy hill - and I was on road-tyres, too. One of my favourite things off-road is 4L steep descents, just allowing the car to crawl its way along under complete control whilst feeling like if it weren't for the seatbelts, I'd have my nose pressed up against the inside of the windscreen. ;) I think you did an admirable job of covering that course - You weren't chewing up the ground by spinning your wheels everywhere - So many people who aren't used to off-road driving are way too heavy with the right-foot. They feel the wheels slip and think that the way to gain more forward momentum is to open the throttle. Then they wonder how they've managed to dig themselves into a hole. Most of my off-road excursions involve pulling a trailer (because I am carrying equipment out to our operational area - I'm a qualified UAV pilot) and my colleague (with a Freelander) once had to ask me to pull his caravan out of a muddy field. His daughter was there at the time and as I was unhitching, she said that she was disappointed that I wasn't spitting mud everywhere - I told her that if she'd wanted me to, all she had to do was say so, and stand behind the car. ;) Did you notice how, when in 4WD, there was quite a lot of understeer? If you didn't feel it on the drive, you can see it in the footage. That can be a little disconcerting if you're not used to it - It's because there is no centre diff and the wheels will slip. If they don't slip, you will wind up your transmission and that can be expensive when something lets go, usually with a loud bang. It sounds like you enjoyed your spin around that course - Do you think you've caught the green-lane bug, now?
@CarObsession5 жыл бұрын
In regards to the understeer, yes, as I'm sure you know, the Jimny has a slower steering rack, so driving it off-road (or indeed trying to park it) requires more steering effort than your normal car, so that takes getting used to. However, it has power steering of course, so it's not exactly a hardship. In regards to greenlaning, yes, I wouldn't mind doing a bit more - in fact I'm testing a Subaru XV in March and I'd like to find somewhere suitable where I can take that off road.

If this was to come to America, it would need close to 200hp.
@CarObsession5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brutal Fates, thanks for watching, but I feel I need to ask this question - why would it 'need' close to 200hp? I can't warrant the need for a Jimny to have that much power, especially as it weighs about the same as a packet of crisps.
@BrutalFates5 жыл бұрын
@@CarObsession It isn't exactly about the power itself, a lot of Americans buy thing's off numbers. It is why cars like the Toyota 86 here in the States is looked down on from a lot of people because it's 200hp is considered nothing, when put next to other similar cars. Even though I think its a amazing car. It is why we have a few crazy cars like the Demon, and the TrackHawk Maybe its because we like straight lines here idk. Also thanks for the response.

Really funky retro little car, If you need an off road car then this probably all most people will need and save a fortune in the process so I can see the attraction, also Suzuki's are pretty damn reliable only thing that kind of baffles me is that they have not fitted the 1.0 Boosterjet engine.....i'm guessing to save on cost and keep the RRP down which is a shame. Great balanced review as always Aaron, and the off roading looked pretty serious and ace fun I bet?. p.s imagine if Suzuki fitted the 1.4 Boosterjet , a mini AMG G wagen?! .
@CarObsession6 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, as always, thanks for watching. Yeah, the Boosterjet would push the price up more, plus Suzuki said that the power delivery of a naturally aspirated engine is better for off-roading.

The old Jimny was cramped in the rear, had (barely existent) bootspace and was most unsafe in a crash with a disappointing 3 star EURONCap rating. Suzuki promises that this Jimny has more rear bootspace, more rear legroom, and is better in a crash.

If your buying a zook for safety your doing it wrong haha. If a jimny gets tboned its probs just going to flip and i accept it haha

@@brysonnorman7772 You won't be defending that and saying that if your head has been cracked by the steering wheel and the passenger's head has been cracked and bleeding by the dashboard, your chest has been cracked, your ribs broken and your legs torso ankles pelvis and body has been crushed beyond recognition, and your body has been trapped amd severely damaged mangled and mashed in a crushed body and your kids have been badly injured. Today's times have changed and cars have had to become much safer in a crash because in today's climate, safety sells cars and it does. I'd rather have a good score 4 star EURONCap rated Jimny at the very least and preferably an excellent 5 star EURONCAP rated Jimny and for Suzuki to release it to market with a fair 3 star EURONCap rated crash test is abominable and abhorrent to say the least. If I was making this car I would aim for at least 4 stars or 5 stars maximum in crash safety.
@brysonnorman77726 жыл бұрын
The problem is the more safe it is the more pricy it could become. I accept that if im in a crash im most likely dead or injured. But in saying that my jimny has enough bar work that its pretty tough. And if need be people can install a roll cage for extra safety

@@brysonnorman7772 But a car SHOULD protect it's occupants and driver in a crash and reduce the severity of any injury in a crash.
