car thermostat change on a 2001 Hyundi Elantra, I was coming home and smelled some anti freeze, I looked at the temperature gage and seen it running hot, so I felt the top hose which was hot and the bottom hose cold so i figured it was the thermostat. In this video I change a car thermostat on a 2001 hyundi elantra.

thanks to your video, i replaced thermostat on my 01 elantra and fixed the overheating issue also fixed my AC that wasn't turning on . 2 birds 1 stone! woohoo!!

I just tried to do my 2002 Hyundai Elantra Thermostat (BEFORE I found and watched your video) and hit a snag that you mentioned. I was working last night and got to the point where I was running the engine to get rid of any trapped air. When the new thermostat opened, I saw a bit of fluid leaking. I knew that I had had a bit of trouble with the lower nut, so I did the wise thing and waited until today when I had more light (I made this wise decision after dropping the socket from my ratchet under the car "somewhere"). Today, I went in and gave the lower nut two small tweaks with the ratchet and I heard a snap. Next, antifreeze started coming out faster than the small leak I had with pressure. I unscrewed the top nut and tried to do the bottom one I had just "tightened', only to find that a chunk of the housing was attached to the thermostat cover. In your video you mentioned doing that. I realized from looking at the gasket that when I had tried to put the cover on in relative dark last night, the thermostat had slipped out of its resting place and when I tightened it last night I actually had the rim of the thermostat between the gasket and the housing. I could see the impression in the gasket gel I had used. Okay, you said you had done something similar -- did you fix it yourself, and if so, what's involved? By the way, you created a great presentation that anyone should be able to follow successfully !

Wesley Peterson what did you replace after you heard that snap me and my Husband just changed out the thermostat and everything was fine until we heard that snap and like you said the antifreeze was running out. what did you do after that?

thanks for the vid. Gotta say though if you do this again, there are like only 4-5 screws that hold on the whole air box assembly, you get that off and it gives you a ton more working room.

I have a uk 1998 hyundai lantra este car, right hand drive. Need to change/check the thermostat. Strange that you show as bottom hose as most thermostats are located in top house engine housing ?

it was brand new antifreeze from when I changed the water pump and timing gear 6 months ago, thanks

Is there a torque spec or just hand tight to tighten the housing

Hi Gabriel , that’s a good question, I just tighten down the bolts until I felt it wasn’t going to leak, I’m sure there’s a better way, but no I never even considered torque specs, I guess I’m a bit old school, thanks Mike
