Well to be fair, in their warrior village, it is normal for a 6 year old kid to HAVE killed monsters already as part of their training. Still, his dad should've realized that Stark didn't lack physical aspect (as we know how truly strong Stark is) and only lacks mental as he's more cowardly than everyone else.

The gag with the village chief's grandma is even funnier in the manga. Instead of "that's what my grandma said" it's "that's what it says in my grandma's will".
@9Misaki33 ай бұрын
It's the same in anime but the English translation often miss translate some bits (especially dubs because they try to have the sound fit the movements of the mouth).
@DarwinAwardWinner3 ай бұрын
@@9Misaki3 Interesting. I can see why they might change it for the dub, but I'm not sure why they didn't keep it that way in the subtitles. It's such a good gag that also further reinforces the story's themes about the passage of time.
@9Misaki33 ай бұрын
@@DarwinAwardWinner Yeah I don't know why they did that either. I personally can understand most of the Japanese without subtitles so it doesn't really affect me but it can be little annoying sometimes especially if there is lots of translating mistakes. I could understand if the joke would have been difficult to translate into English but this joke would have worked just fine.
@sulphuric_glue44682 ай бұрын
@@DarwinAwardWinner Anime subtitles are becoming increasingly bad in their translation honestly. Fan translations of manga often do a better job. My most major complaint, which applies to Frieren as well, is translating the honorifics. Most Japanese honorifics just do not translate well into English at all, and either completely miss the actual meaning of them (such as -kun vs. -san, which cannot be translated into English) or sound very weird and uncomfortable to us (such as onee-chan as "sis", a particularly egregious one). It's also impossible to translate dropping the honorifics entirely, which can either be rude or intimate depending on the context. I don't think they need to be translated. 95% of anime watchers already know what the most common ones of san, kun, chan and sama mean, and most also know the slightly more unusual ones like dono. If they don't know, viewers are easily capable of learning, these are not difficult concepts. Translating them both misses out on the original meaning of dialogue but also ruins some gags - this happens in Frieren, where Fern drops the honorifics when Stark asks her to address him casually, which is rude because she just calls him "Stark" rather than "Stark-san". The attempt to translate this into English is kind of weak and lacks the full force of how much Fern's demeanour actually changes, as the change from "Mr. Stark" to "Stark" doesn't have the same meaning at all as "Stark-sama" to "Stark".

Imagine Himmel's feeling when he failed to pull that sword. Maybe one of the reasons why he never told Frieren his feeling openly. He expected to die somewhere in the journey and don't want Frieren to grief. He's already prepared for the worst-case scenario.

no one has pointed this out but, i think the Hero’s sword is a metaphorical tool but it will never be wield by anyone. it’s just there to bring despair and determination for any hero who dares to wield it. anyone who fails to do it will be depressed and probably stop their journey to heroism. but Himmel, as he said, he don’t care whether he wields a fake sword, a hero doesn’t need a legendary sword to be able to save the world. it is the resolve that drives a hero be a hero. so i think that is.

I think the storytelling trick that Frieren uses in the 2nd half of this episode (and many other places) is spend the time leading up to the climax setting up a bunch of revelations like dominoes, and then the climax of the arc is tipping the first one over and watching them cascade into each other.
@slavedemorto6 ай бұрын
My interpretation of the first scene is that Frieren remembers this memory set in the flower fields because Fern smells like flowers hence she refuses to walk after Fern asks her. She wants to go back to that memory that is triggered by the floral scent of Fern's hair. That's why Frieren says "You smell nice.", because it brought back nice memories.

I love how casually Frieren talks about somebody's ancestors. The kid is talking about a tale passed down from her grandmother and Frieren replies like it happened last Tuesday. "I told her it would be fine gawwwd"

i love the half story format. The episodes rarely end at the conclusion of the previous plotline. Its the intermission then you get the first half of the next plotline. I think it attributes a lot to the charm of the show. The idea that the stories are never really over and there is always another adventure to be had.
@Bhiraata6 ай бұрын
love how sublte it is that: one, heiter never told fern that himmel pulled the sword, bc he really didn't; and two, the village struggles with monsters and dont hire adventurers, as said by frieren, "because himmel is the hero"
@jofujino6 ай бұрын
There's also an awesome bit of subtlety in the scene with Stark staring at the Hero's sword after hearing the true story and gets a flashback of the village under attack and his brother. Stark doesn't try to pull the sword because he doesn't see himself as hero material. When he thinks of someone who could pull the sword his mind jumps to his brother and the day he sacrificed himself to save him.

Stark was taught to fight by Eisen. But in his heart, he's the real protege of Himmel, legitimately caring for everyone they come into contact with. Not doing the right thing because Himmel would have done it first (Heiter adopting Fern) but because he just instinctively knows The Right Thing To Do.

Robert Anton Wilson (1932-2007) once wrote: "Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. We have never seen a totally sane human being." This remained true in his lifetime; sadly, he died before Kanehito Yamada created the character of Himmel the Hero. Also, the second half of this episode rips my guts out every time I watch it. It explains so much of why Stark doesn't believe in himself, and it gives us a beautiful piece of wisdom from Eisen that seems so simple but hits so hard: "Everyone who works hard is a warrior." Eisen is an absolute beast, but he truly believes that if you are doing your best, you are worthy of honor and respect. That's a lesson so many of us need to remember when we're being way too hard on ourselves.

I think people look at Himmel not pulling the sword out in the wrong perspective. Himmel is not the Hero true, but that also means that the Demon Lord is not the threat to the world that the Hero is meant to defeat. If so then what is the threat, and when?

This is the 1st thing I thought and the 1st time I’ve seen someone else question if the demon king is the calamity hellbent on destroying the world… I think it’s obvious they weren’t with how long they were alive - at least as old as Frieren
@onceuponatimeandspace6 ай бұрын
I disagree. I think it's more about the fact Heroes can be anyone, not needed for prophecy. I think in the same way people tell the story of how Himmel pulled the sword, I think they were just telling stories of how the sword needed to be pulled. It's not the sword, it's the Hero.

This episode is about self-doubt. Failed to pull the sword out and therefore not the real hero, ran away from the village and therefore not worth being loved, didn't face against a monster and therefore a failure. NO. Eisen says it best, anyone who works hard is a warrior. Eisen is what we all know but we didn't have the courage to believe, but he is right.

Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere else or if it's only with the translation in the version you're watching (I am pretty sure the English dub and Netflix translations are similar) but "The Hero's Sword can only be pulled from the stone by the hero who will drive off the great calamity bent on destroying this world." doesn't specifically refer to the Demon King. The prophecy still could hold true if the Demon King wasn't going to cause a great calamity, implying some far greater threat is yet to come. Also, regarding the various references to cowardice and being afraid, I always think of the quote from Civilization 6 when unlocking the Military Tradition civic. "Bravery is being the only one who knows you're afraid."

Or it could be that the great calamity was defeated a long time ago and therefore the heroes sword can never be pulled out because that world ending calamity has long passed into the history books and that the hero returned it back where he found it after the task was done. Hell we know Kraft was involved in some heroic stuff and he's god knows how old or event happened and the hero never got a chance to pull it out. Also if we assume that the sword was created and sealed during the first chief time than I would estimate it's around 2400 years old. If we assume 50 years of service for each chief which is 48 with 49th only being a child.

@MajorSmurf6 ай бұрын
@@grimmturd Hmm... it could be that the mother or father were chiefs but died when the current chief was too young so when that happens usually it gets handed back to a chief who retired their position. So technially speaking it could be something like this. 46 Grandma was chief but Retires 47 Mother or father takes on role but die after birth of child (most likely the mother because we only see female chiefs) 48 Grandma takes up her old position 49 Child reaches an age where she can assume the position after Grandma dies
