The names of characters and places are mostly German words and in a wide sense they fit to them. Frieren - to be cold or freezing Himmel - heaven or sky (a lot of times the anime shows the sky when Frieren talks about Himmel) Heiter - cheerful Eisen - iron Fern - distant Flamme - flame You can look up almost every name in this show and translate it to English.

It’s not that Himmel aged badly, but that Heiter aged well. It was established at the beginning of the episode that Heiter looked the same as he ever did, even after they traveled together for 10 years. And then, fifty years later, he’s still the one who looks the same as he ever did. He looked older than he was when he was young, so now that he’s old, it makes sense he would look younger. Because he always looks the same. I don’t know why nobody catches this.

I assume it has something todo with him being a priest as in quite a few stories it seems being connected to a god/goddess or generally holy power can prevent curses and illness to some degree and sometimes that also results in a longer. Of course even that is not even close to dwarfs or elfs.

well that not the case the reason he grew old and hieter was not as old as himmel is because although it may not look like it but himmel is way older than hieter altleat 15-20 years old it wasn't said directly but in one of the ep if you see how himmel refers hieter it is very clear of their age difference (can't do in detail cause it will be spoiler)

02:17 I'm re-watching this show and am once again amazed by the details. In this scene, when Himmel is talking, Himmel's eyes are on Frieren and we can see her on screen. But when Frieren is talking, her eyes are not on Himmel, and we don't see him on screen. I won't go into detail because it would be a spoiler, but it's a nice detail.

My grandfather passed away this past week, and something about the way frieren is written just really resonates with me. I have a feeling the author may have had a similar experience with losing someone close to them. My grandfather really was my hero. He even went on a journey across the world as a teenager. Hundreds of people came to his wake. I never really appreciated the significance of the traditions he carried on to our family until he died. This concept of upholding tradition is even touched on in the anime.

To give a good indication on how long Frieren will live- The current setting looks to be say, the middle ages, there abouts, sometimes before the industrial revolution in our world. There's flashbacks to when Frieren was with her Master Flamme, and the architecture and clothing of the people makes it look like ANCIENT GREECE OR ROME, and Frieren only looks SLIGHTLY younger than she does now.

I LOVE Frieren reactions! It's in my top 5 animes out of 200+ I've watched, and it's become my #1 anime recommendation for new anime watchers (not that you guys are new) because it does an extremely good job at introducing all the good tropes a good fantasy/slice of life anime should have without any of the stupid fan service. Its character and world building are one of the best I've seen. It's animation and facial expressions are top tier as well IMO.

My grandfather (father to my mother) died when I was 14. I loved him very much, but he lived on a city far away from mine, so I would only see him on new years eve and we'd stay at his home (he lived with my grandmother) for about a week around then. When my mother told me he died, I couldn't cry either. I had many good times with him, spent many new years together and talked a lot. I didn't felt that I would miss him, I felt that I had "enough grampa" for all that a kid could ask for. I was sad and I felt empty, but not enough to cry. It only hit me some days later, when I was cleaning my room and I saw a board game in my closet which he gave me on Christmas a couple years before. I cried a lot then, and some times after, when remembering him. Not because of missing him but to the realization of how much he meant to me. He was the best man I ever met.

Frieren is 100% LOTR style high fantasy. Frieren and the other elves you meet also are the most in line with Tolkien's elves of any recent fiction, arguably even more like his elves than the ones in the recent Amazon series.

"I'm getting major Lord of the Rings vibes." To me, it feels like a mixture of the beginning of Fellowship and the end of Return of the King. Also, I love the way they handle time and adventuring in this show. It took them 10 years to cross the continent and kill the Devil King. A lot of that was because of travel. Sure, they had side quests, set-up quests, etc.; but the continent is massive. Hell, to see the "good spot" for the Era Meteor Shower, they had to travel for a full week. Even though we're rushed through certain parts in order to follow how quickly and miniscule it is for Frieren, we also have characters who deem it normal and worthwhile to travel for a week. When was the last time you casually committed a week of your life to go somewhere? On top of that, because we "zoom out on the timeline" to follow Frieren's journey, it makes the simple moments feel 1,000x more meaningful. This show immediately gives you "parting ways with high school friends when leaving for college" vibes and then gut punches you when time catches up. Gah, I'm just word-vomiting over here. I love the writing so much.

Assuming Himmel and Heiter were in their 20s when they started the journey, 30s when they returned, plus 50 would put Himmel in his 80s when he died, and an additional 20 would put Heiter in his 100s.

Just so you know, mimics have been around WAY longer than Dark Souls. They first appeared in Dungeons & Dragons back in 1977. Also, there's no overhyping Frieren. It's just that good. In most modern fantasy (most of which is inspired by Lord of the Rings), elves usually are extremely long-lived, as in thousands of years (they were immortal in LOTR unless killed in battle). Also, dwarves usually are longer-lived than humans, typically depicted as living 200-300 years.
