I know this was posted in August, but we're just seeing this in our timeline... From the video, it looks like a possible short with the subwoofer ... either debris in the voice coil gap from cutting metal, wire strands, or even a product defect. Most likely this was a short in the terminal or on a tinsel lead. As for the amp failing... the noise sounded like the power supply caps exploding after the sub channel failed. A dead short at low volume over an extended period of time is the worst case scenario. If this was somehow at the level right before the protection kicked in, and stayed there for a while, it would result in this worst possible condition. We know this happens in the install bay and Rockford Fosgate tests for this extensively. As with any strange issues (and this definitely qualifies) be sure to get the product back in the hands of your rep and ultimately to Directed Australia, the authorized Rockford Fosgate distributor for NZ. We'd like to examine the product to determine what the failure was and feed this back to our quality control department. Car Audio Etc. has been a great representative of Rockford Fosgate in NZ, and we're really proud of the quality of work done at your shop. Keep up the good work!

+Rockford Fosgate thanks guys I love your product and continue to recommend all of including theee products to everyone I meet. We sent the products back to our supplier and they determined that the subwoofer had a manufacturing defect as it appeared that the spider had been laid incorrectly and was off by some angle allowing the tinsel leads to be touching the basket of the subwoofer. Obviously with the subwoofer being mounted on metal this put a dead short on the amplifiers subwoofer channel. Why the protection circuits didn’t kick in I am still unsure. They could not diagnose the amp as they were unsure how to dismantle it. I believe it is with our suppliers still here in Auckland New Zealand if you are wanting to have a look at it I can connect you with them. Good work with all the new products and website guys I am really looking forward to seeing more in depth footage of the DSR1. James

Thank You James! Definitely appreciate your meticulous documentation of this issue, and we sincerely apologize for the delay in your install bay. I'm confident your local rep fed this back to Directed Australia, your parent distributor. Also appreciate the confidence with the new website as I was fortunate enough to be a part of the 5 member team that made that happen. We have more content coming for the DSR1 including an RTTI training for installers. -Eric R.

Hey James that rattle issue with the rear shelf tray can b taken care of by getting single side self stick foam weather stripping that usually comes in a roll or two from your local hardware store. The gray color should b close enough it would barely be noticeable if at all by sticking it to the plastic area of the third brake light so when you reinstall the tray the foam strip will smash against the rear glass instead of the plastic. I use it on almost every car when having the exact same rattling issue and can also b painted to match interior color,just give plenty of dry time since the foam will be saturated with paint until completely dry.

I just want to say to everyone out there when you’re using a subwoofer in a free-air environment like this, it’s VERY EASY to overpower the subwoofer. Normally in a free-air environment a subwoofer’s max power handling drops sufficiently because there is no back pressure like when the sub is installed into an enclosure. It’s very easy to push a subwoofer beyond its limits in this situation.

My soundstream class D amp did that noise when i was trying to adjust the gains by the multimeter ! There was no speakers connected of coure . Wasn't that loud though but there was a small tiny noise coming through the amp same like this rockford before explode ! My amp still going but im not very sure for the reliability !

I had a old punch 200m amp that ran for 15 years...but then it started on fire. So I am not surprised.
@one85db7 жыл бұрын
There is a good explanation for why the sub wasn't as loud. It is because the positive half of the audio signal was going straight to ground and you were only hearing the negative half of the signal, effectively making it half the volume. My guess is that the positive tinsel lead was touching the metal of the basket where the spider meets the basket, perhaps the spider was upside down.

Regardless of what happened to the sub (whether it fried on its own, or you accidentally grounded it out) you would certainly think the Rockford amp would have sufficient internal protection circuitry to avoid that result. I have to admit, the possibility of grounding the sub occurred to me when you were talking about bolting through the deck and sub. I didn't follow that carefully on how you actually attached to baffle/deck/sub, but I should have commented on that at the time. Don't stress on it. Shit happens and you move on.

+Robert Carlson when you were tuning were you using the test cd that came with the amp and also were all of your sound settings on flat?
@caraudioetc7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Carlson also 3 o’clock on the dial is about 80% gain. That’s actually quite high and means that your head units rca outputs aren’t very high voltage. When I installed this amp in this car and mine, the gains only went up to about 50% before it clipped on the output.

No not max volume on the hu. Pioneer usually distorts around vol 37-38. I always set the amp gain with pioneer on vol 35 to be on the safe side All flat on the hu ant test where it distort with the smd on the rca. Test all of them Then set the amps Nice work by the way

i have a pioneer it did not clip i drive with volume around 35-40
@caraudioetc7 жыл бұрын
Ubbe Hedlund this stereo the Pioneer AVH-X8850bt can go to max volume and not distort on either 1khz or 40hz. You can see this when I go back to check the amp and the input clip led is not turned on. Different pioneer models will have different clipping points.
@timmturner7 жыл бұрын
My Pioneer head unit doesn't distort the subwoofer line-out until 42, never tested the speaker outs since they are only 17 watts unamplified running 65 watt RMS Punch separates. You can't group all Pioneer head units based on your limited sampling, there are literally hundreds of different models in use.

not sure why ANYONE would hand a sub under rear deck and run it freeair(no enclosure) thats some weak thinking for an install! but still sucks to see gear smoke heres where and when you find out how good a brand is! @halifaxmax50397 жыл бұрын
Plenty of subs can run free-air/baffled through the rear deck. The original ran that way. The basket and coil should be isolated from each other, not a circuit. That seems like a manufacturer defect.
@caraudioetc7 жыл бұрын
In my other videos I explained that that's where the Customer wants it and I said I would give it a go. Also it was actually sounding really good! Like way better than I expected, so lack of enclosure is not a problem.

I had plans on getting this amp, been reading it gets really hot and then I see it blew here...guess all the advancements to make so much power in such a small chassis needs more time to mature. Guess I'll look into some other 5 channel amps.
@caraudioetc7 жыл бұрын
+Pimphand Gamester I have this amp in my car, and installed it in quite a small air cavity. It was getting relatively warm after lengthy use so I added some fans sucking and blowing air in the same direction as its internal fans and even though it still gets mildly warm to the touch, I have run it at high volumes for long periods of time with no issues. Check out the video in my Project Legacy playlist where I install fans and you will see what I mean. I definitely rate them as a good amp.

Car Audio.etc Fosgate will likely warranty both but the dead amplifier is your fault for not testing the subwoofer for resistance and continuity prior to installing. I know you tested it with a different amp and I would have thought it was good to go, it would have been my fault as well. You will test in the future, something good came from this incident. Don't lose faith in Rockford Fosgate, their amplifiers are the best. Their subwoofers are good but certainly better subs exist, the V.A.S.T design is terrible and prone to premature failure. I hope you get good news from warranty.
@caraudioetc7 жыл бұрын
T Turner I do love Rockford Fosgate and always will. This has in no way dampened my faith in their product. I don't however think it is the buyer or installers responsibility to test the functionality of all brand new products, especially from a brand this good. I have never seen a subwoofer with a constant short from the coil to the basket so In all honesty I wouldn't have even of thought to check for that. The fault wouldn't have even been found if I had put it in a box is what really makes me think though, who knows how many people put there with subwoofers in enclosures have voice could that are shorted to the basket and don't know about it. Also the amp really really should have gone into protect mode the moment it detected a short.
