I future proofed just over a year ago by getting a bigger tow car “in case” we got a bigger / heavier van. Changed from petrol 2.2L Toyota RAV4 AWD to VW 3L Diesel Touareg . Massive difference in tow ability and torque and get around 28mpg towing which is same as the RAV. I’ll leave the Lecky cars to Scalextric. Good vlog Phil !

Well here’s a very important debate. Now, my view. As long as there are HGVs on the road diesel will be available. For many years too. As for the type of tow car the availability and choice will shrink as the EV’s take over market share. While ever caravans , Horse Enthusiasts, Water Sports are available to will the tow car. My only concern is £££££ . Increased fuel prices, Increased Pitch Fees. Good Vlog.

Hi Phil, just a point about buying an almost new car. If buying a vw group car, nearly new, unless it has been specified with the vw towing wiring kit, or has had a vw towbar factory fitted as standard, the plate on the car will show it is not rated for towing and NEVER can be. I would hate for one of your viewers to buy a year old vw, and then find they can never legally tow with it.....

I think you have a valid point but don’t forget the world is upside down at the moment. Supply is a issue in every industry from cars, caravans, building etc. once the cost of living kicks in, people will stop spending and availability will come back. Yes here will be less choice of diesel new from many manufacturers but it’s not going to be the end of the world. People will switch to petrol, hybrid and electric once they understand if they can live with the compromises. After all we are all going to have to change we do things in the future as we can’t afford the old ways.

Hi Chris, You make a good point. My main concern at present is still being able to tow. As the recession bites most of the Caravan and Leisure Vehicle Industries will slow down. The Uk and most of France still do not have enough charging points (when they work). I have managed to secure possibly one of the last New diesel cars that will be made by V.A.G Electric and hydrogen seem to be the Future.🙂 Thanks Phil👍🙂

Hi Phil, I’ve just been through the same exercise. I wanted a nearly new tow car with specific requirements not unlike your own. Having identified a few contenders I could not find my first choice anywhere. Eventually I happened on a 6 month old BMW X3 diesel electric mild hybrid and I have to say it is a wonderful tow car. It should also be future proof if I decide to get a bigger van in the future.

I’ve just got an 11 month old Volvo XC60 PHEV having previously only towed with a Skoda Kodiaq vRS BiTDI. We still have the Kodiaq but it’ll be going in the new year. The petrol PHEV makes way more sense for us. All our local trips/commute are pure electric, and even with current electricity prices it’s 1/3 the cost of petrol per mile. Towing is a dream, it’s got 400bhp so no worries there, gets 20MPG with 1800kg on the back, air suspension is a revelation when towing for me and when on site (with permission) you can charge from the caravan’s external socket for free miles on your local excursions whilst on holiday! Personally I won’t be going back to diesels, I have a EV coming in April (XC40 Recharge) and that will also tow our van for shorter weekend breaks away. We also have just had solar panels installed on the house which makes the EV/PHEV make even more sense - with the cost of electricity right now they’ll be paid off in under 3 years! The caveat to this is you need a driveway to park your car(s) on to enable cost effective charging. For those without this option though I can see the frustration the current market brings with lack of choice. That said, there’s nothing wrong with towing with a petrol - modern turbo charged engines produce LOADS of torque, and if you get a mild hybrid (so no need to plug it in), taking into account the cheaper cost of the fuel compared to diesel as well, you can end up with something very nearly as economical.
@lostweekendscaravan

Hi Jose. I really like Volvos a great deal but they are very expensive and out of my budget. I like the idea of a Hybrid but my drive is at the rear of my home (don't ask its a poor design) there is no electric in the garage and to charge a car I would need a 150 foot cable. I had a quote to fit electric in the garage and this was £5000 as the house and garage are on different levels. There is no safe way charge from the front of the house either. I agree there is nothing wrong with petrol cars, but they are more costly to fuel. I do a lot of miles each week and also tow a trailer so diesel is more cost effective for me. I suppose it comes down to our own personal needs. Thanks Phil🙂👍
2 жыл бұрын
@@lostweekendscaravan wow, that is a crazy cost to add electric to the garage. I only spent a bit more than that on our entire solar install! As you do a lot of miles and tow a trailer derv probably is still the best option for you personally as you say. JCB have done some amazing research on hydrogen ICE (not fuel cell) for plant and commercial use, I suspect that will maybe come to the rescue for people like yourself that can’t go EV/PHEV and have a driving profile of long distance and towing. Check out Harry’s Garage channel, he visited their factory and did a great job of explaining the tech. Cheers 😀

A couple of years ago my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso was damaged in a collision (oncoming driver on the wrong side of the road. Thankfully, I was able to avoid a head-on) and the insurance deemed it to be beyond economical repair so I needed a replacement towing vehicle. I considered either a diesel estate or a 4x4. I ended up buying a 2003 Volvo XC90 which meant I still had a 7-seater and would be handy should I want to get a bigger caravan. I can't afford brand new so I have get what I can afford and I don't want to saddle myself with lots of debt or a monthly lease payment with nothing to show for it. EVs have their place but they will never completely replace the internal combiustion engine. A lot of people fail to realize that the root cuase of tailpipe emisssions is the fuel. Switch to an alternative fuel that pollutes less and the problem is greatly reduced. Throwing away the combustion enigne is NOT the answer.

Hi You choose well the XC90 is a great car and a very good tow car. Yes the fuel is the key. Porsche are developing a new fuel which can be used in standard engines. If it takes off it will kill the EV Market if they don't all set on fire. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Phil🙂👍

It does worry me that the world and his wife wants to move to ev’s and our personal preferences are being taken away from us. There’s no ev that can perform as efficiently as a tow car yet and it’s going to be years before infrastructures are in place to serve millions of ev’s. Personally I wouldn’t touch an ev or hybrid yet. If you have a good diesel tow car, hang on to it for as long as you can even if you need to spend more than before to keep it on the road. 🫤 I know this will make me unpopular with the ev / hybrid warriors but we should all be able to express our opinion 🙂 Trev

We bought a brand new 2021 Diesel Ford Ranger to pull our heavy 2000kg twin axel caravan as this suited our needs. Pulls the caravan safely, plenty of room to take all the sporting and family equipment we need for extended trips away and doubles as the daily driver, as my wife works in a job where she has to get there come rain, snow or shine. Don't get me wrong, its not the most efficient tow car but it does everything we need so you cannot have everything. My issue with electric tow cars is the range and subsequently charging on route to a holiday. On Friday we will be making our way from sunny Yorkshire all the way down to hopefully even brighter Cornwall, which will include 1 or maybe 2 fuel stops. With the Ranger, it will be around 15 min, no longer than 30 min if the services are busy to collect fuel. How does this work with electric cars? Most services have single space reverse in charging spots, so you need to leave the caravan unhitched somewhere, not ideal and a pain to re-couple. What happens if all the spaces are full? Charging an electric car is no where near as quick as adding fuel. Our journey on Friday is going to be around 8 hours, using an electric car would make it significantly longer and a lot more frustrating. I also don't plan to site it, we bought a touring caravan for a reason. I'm all for progress and I'm not anti electric, but currently and I think for the foreseeable, electric tow cars for larger Caravans are not going to cut it.

Hi Phil. We have a diesel Dacia Duster (SUV) which we purchased brand new new in 2017 before diesel shutdown statement. We bought our 1st van in 2019. The car will not pull a heavy van as its quite a light car due to how its manufactured. It is exceptionally good and so much cheaper than other brand new cars. We cannot really afford another new car as we are pensioners - hubby purchased car with a pension payout. We are in the position of cannot afford new car & cannot change van to anything bigger. As good as EVs are getting they still don't command the market. We shall have to make do with what we have, look after it, and hope it lasts & sees us out. We are both 70 +.

It was hard enough finding a suitable and decent used caravan at the back end of 2021. Dealers had no stock or what little they had in our price range was very tired and overpriced. Previous searching for Tow car was problematic too due to rarity as you state, especially with unravelling the legal requirements regarding weight etc. for this novice! Eventually we found a fully-loaded diesel Passat estate that filled our needs, (manual, no autos to be had) price range and towing ability. 2 weeks later before we had a chance to tow the new van, I was rammed by a 4x4 who didn't see a 'Give Way' sign. The lovely Passat was written off. Even more difficult finding a replacement vehicle. No decent low-mileage diesel auto estates anywhere, so we settled for a saloon Passat. "Why do we need an estate? We aren't having to move the offspring anymore now they have all graduated!" Then we adopted another dog, a greatly shedding gold Labrador carried in a black car interior.....oh dear.

Hi Phil, i changed my tow car from a BMW X3, to a Mitsubishi L200. I was very lucky to get the Mitsubishi year 2000, & only 5000mls on the clock. Lucky for me, the Mitsubishi was only used at the main HQ in Cirencester as a pool car. You may ask, why change from a BMW? Well, we needed more space for our future plans for touring. Plus i have got the remaining warranty until 2025. Average 23-25.5MPG. Which i don't is bad for a pick up.(Deisel of course). Stay safe.

In exactly the same position. My current tug is the Ford Tourneo which is basically a Transit with seats. Perfect in every way for us and is so useful in many ways as well as a brilliant tow car. Also not classed as a van so therefore is not restricted speed wise like commercial vehicles although national limits are rapidly disappearing nationwide but that’s another story!! So off to the dealers and get offered an amazing part ex against a new model except the only available engine is 150ps which has borderline capability for towing 2000kg plus as you say, a nine month wait. Three weeks pondering what to do and get a call from the dealer to say Ford have closed the order book for new vehicles as a new model is coming next year. I suspect the engine choices will not include a 170 ps manual diesel and the Phev will not tow so it looks like all electric for me depending on price. I suspect 120 miles ish when towing which for most trips will just about be ok. Watch this space

We made the decision last year that our next tow car would be petrol. Our car is our daily driver and covers short distances commuting in town, so the diesels are just no use what with continual issues with emmision control parts. We now have a XC60, 250bhp petrol, tows our twin axle effortlessly and is achieving 19mog. Our previous diesel tow vehicle achieved 24mpg. So with the high cost of diesel over petrol at the pumps, the volvo costs 37p a mile in fuel, the diesel cost 34p a mile. Factor in the diesel vehicles low residuals and higher initial cost and they just don't make sense anymore.

@@lostweekendscaravan our van is plated at 2000kg, 2L engine pulls it better than the diesel pick up does! Give it a couple of years and diesel will be finished in the car market. Plus diesel price is going to go up at the pumps due to increased demand for power generation due to the gas shortage. Its currently about 27p a litre higher than petrol on the wholesale market, but the fuel companies have not passed that on yet. Its scary seeing the car do 19mpg, but overall, its cheaper to run than diesel for us because the car only does 7000 miles a year, so that's just over £200 extra in petrol over diesel. That is my worry about caravanning in general. We have the Kia Sorento that is nearly 8 years old. So we have looked at other options BUT it's things like your Audi which is a lovely car but for us way too expensive now. I even looked at the Audi A6 as better MPG than current car but the rise in price is soo much it doesn't seem worth it. We did a while a go consider the 8ft but given that cars are getting smaller diesel engines(1.6) that is no good or Hybrid it's becoming harder. Sold my BMW X3 and got a Ford Ranger, they aren’t for everyone but it gives us a car capable of towing a heavy van, with space inside for the family and a huge payload, especially as the payload of our Swift is pretty crap (160KG and can’t be upgraded, then add in the motor cover etc and it doesn’t leave you much before you are hitting your maximum caravan weight of 1600kg), i tend to work from home now so the only time i really use my car is for towing, so might as well have one that’s built for the job. Diesel engines are becoming smaller and cars are getting lighter, EV’s just aren’t where id want them to be for towing, i would want one with at least a 250 mile range once your caravan is attached - they’re nowhere near that at the minute, it does seem that caravan owners will have to make some hard choices soon, especially those that can’t afford brand new EV’s, those choices are: 1) site your caravan on a seasonal pitch 2) lighter caravan and and EV 3) keep running older diesels 4) sell up The other downside to this is that how long before people are struggling to sell bigger twin axle caravans because nobody can get a tow car to tow it?

Hi Paul. I have consider a pick-up but still in this (so called modern age) some sites class them as commercial and will not let you on. This I disagree with but they make the rules. I totally agree with your conclusion there are 4 solutions none of which I am interested in. The SUV I have chosen will tow the van but its at the top in terms weight to Van. I think most twin and 8 foot wide vans will end up being sold a seasonal pitch vans only in the near future and include used ones. Thanks for you thoughts and watching Phil.🙂👍

@@lostweekendscaravan I suppose it’s no different with twin axle caravans, a lot of campsites apparently don’t allow them either but the reality is they don’t enforce it, I suspect it’s more to do with a certain clientele and it gives campsites the ability to choose whether they allow them onto their sites or not, incidentally though, I believe that once you fit a roller cover to a Ford Ranger, it is no longer classified as a commercial vehicle due to the reduction of its maximum payload to less than 1000kg (which I believe is how a commercial vehicle gets its definition.)

I do think that we as diesel drivers are being pushed to other alternatives especially when looking at the current fuel prices, the difference between petrol and diesel was very little as now it's around 20p a litre more for diesel. For now I'll have to stick with what I've already got but who knows what the future will bring as they'll not be anything the will tow 1500kg and return an average 33mpg when towing

Hi Ste. Yes the cost per mile between petrol and Diesel is closing. I find the A6 has a great MPG when towing and driving but it has just got too impractical for us now. I think diesel fuel will be around for a while longer unless all Lorries some how go electric soon. Thanks for your comment & watching. Phil🙂👍

We would need a longer range on electric commercial vehicles for any change and despite huge improvements I don't think it's going to happen soon. But we are seeing more towns and cities bringing in clean air zones so I do wonder if we'll see companies using smaller electric vans and doing more frequent deliveries to reduce their daily costs

If you're not brand conscious look at Ssangyong. We bought one 5 year's ago and are now on our 2nd one.

Yes Ssangyong are definitely worth a look, I bought one three years ago new probably one of the best vehicles I've had for towing and excellent value for money.

What about Diesel PHEV? Mercedes and Volvo make them and they look like the ideal choice for caravans.

Hi Jack both are good choice but they are a bit too pricey for my wallet and the Bank Manager would not sign off on them. 😌 Thanks for the suggestion Phil 👍🙂

I am hanging onto my 2010 diesel for as long as it lasts. If synthetic fuel emerges as the front runner you may even be able to keep your existing car. I don't think ev cars are sustainable or practicle, which in my opinion is why there is such poor investment and thought process that goes into charging stations. A new ev today will be worthless in a few years as tech moves on. Be careful!

Hi CB. At present I have no intention of buying an EV. Like you I am hoping that synthetic fuel does come along. This new car I have ordered will be hung on to for such a long time to come. Thanks Phil🙂👍

Hi. Diesel will remain until they are forced of the road in 10 years plus time. Electric is a short term solution. Diesel hybrid only have a short ev range , so no Diesel are not a thing of the past.
