I have used Berryman for 40 years and about 5 years ago I started using regular strength Pine Sol. The Pines Sol is great even for very dirt carbs and parts. Since everyone has gone environment friendly, now including me. The Pine Sol does the job and makes the shop smell great too. Moreover, I noticed that you should used a 25% to 75% Pine Sol to water ratio. I have found out that the 50/50 mix with the Pine Sol solution cleans better in 24 hrs especially when it is cold out side, try 48 if you can. Rinse the Pine Sol off in HOT WATER too and your results will be a lot better. If you are really cleaning old dirty parts, scrape first and use as a 65 to 75% PIne Sol to water ratio mix. I am glad I found your channel and I will be following you. P.S. You can use the Pine Sol multiple times.

Got an 84 FJ1100 for 300 bucks, 13,000 miles. Wouldn't run. Disassembled the carbs, barely. (Left the pilot jets in place.) Dropped them into a plastic toolbox and submerged them in Pinesol for 3 days. I was impressed how well it made them look. I'm more of a mad max bike guy so that doesn't really matter to me but they were nice. After a good rinse I put everything back together and put them on the bike and it ran flawless. Only drawback is it turned the fuel feed tubes grey. I am about to do the same to my 83gs1100. Only advice would be to split the carbs and remove the plastic feed and transfer tubes. And forget about using the toolbox for anything else moving forward. It's been a year since I rebuilt them and the box if opened will fill a 2 car garage with the smell of pine. That's after letting it sit open for a few weeks.

A lot of shops have a junker dishwasher just for cleaning parts. I'm not sure if Pinesol foams up or not in a dishwasher, but I can tell you that dishwashers do a fantastic job cleaning parts if the water in them is hot enough. Citrus oil cleaners work well too if you're looking for a more organic solution. Berryman's seems to really get the deep down funk out of carb passages, though. I save the Berryman's for when I rebuild a carburetor and use organic cleaners for everyday parts cleaning. Great video. Thanks!

IMO it's best to dilute the Pinesol like you demonstrated. I've been experimenting and I just ruined a Motorcraft 2100 by soaking it in full strength Pinesol for a month (had some other shit going on and forgot about it LOL). A month in full strength WILL eat the gaskets. Diluted 50/50 with water and 1-2 days max should work in most cases. I say most because it did seem to have a bad reaction to the plating on the Motorcraft carb almost immediately. Did the trick on the XR's carb though

Soaked it in the solution which consisted of the entire bottle filled the rest of the way with water (just an inch above the peak of the carb parts) for 8 hours. Every bit or grit and grime fell off afterwards. Worked magically! P.S. If you can get ahold of the passage cleaners MADE for carbs, do it. Don't use cheap rotary wire wheels and stuff as you'll loose metal strands in the carb. Its okay outside, not inside.

Great idea… But i would recommend removing the floats before submerging in boiling water, especially if the floats are the old brass soldered seam type, the high temp. of boiling will most likely create pressure within the float and cause the solder seam to rupture.

The chem-dip contains solvents that will break down the specific varnish that occurs when gasoline breaks down. That is what you have on the float bowls, the stuff that's brown, and almost powdery. Notice how the Pine-Sol won't cut it. This is what gets inside jets, and ports clogging them up, and the chem-dip does a fine job at solving this stuff, and re-melting it. There's one big problem with your method though, chem-dip solves the varnish, but water doesn't dissolve chem-dip, even worse it may re-harden the varnish in globs. You need to use a solvent after chem-dip, not water. Lacquer thinner works good. I haven't seen anyone mention purple cleaner, it's much cheaper than pine sol, and does a much better job.

Good video comparison, I start out with mineral spirits or some old gas and clean the worst debris off with a toothbrush, maybe 2 cycles or as needed, then I heat water and pinesol up on the stove and put parts in there(glass pot or whatever you have), get the water steamy hot!, sometimes I use a stainless steel pan if parts are larger, I again use the toothbrush. I pour the unused back in a jug (when cooled)and use it again, the bottom amount, I flush it down the drain or throw it in the weeds as it is biodegradable mostly dirty water. Or flush it down the toilet(make sure your got your springs and needle valves so they don't go down the drain!). . I reuse the pinesol for 2 or 3 jobs depending... I put one tablespoon of pinesol in per quart of water or so, pinesol is pretty strong!, you can tell by the oder, remember it is like 200°! steamy. Agitation and rinse with fresh water, maybe a drop of dawn to cut the oil film, I am known for my clean parts, sometimes it takes 5 or 6 cycles, just keep on rolling, do what it takes and be safe with your lungs, eyes and skin. Good video. (Use your best judgement, for proper times) it varies from job to job.

Even though I rinsed it afterwards and used an air gun to blow dry there was noticeable rust accumulations on some of the outside hardware. Also the cap for the air cut off valve is made of some sort of cheaper "white metal" material that seemed to dissolve slightly (rougher finished surface). On the other bottle, not quite as old, it was surfactants and TRIETHANOLAMINE. Note that Simple Green Extreme, which is safe for airplane metal including aluminum, also has TRIETHANOLAMINE. But, today's Pine Sol has all sorts of chemicals including alcohol, benzoic acid and sulfonic acid. So, if you are going to clean carburetors which are made from aluminum or an aluminum zinc mix (pot metal) then be careful what you soak them in OR THEY'LL TURN BLACK OR GET EATEN AWAY.

Oven cleaner can damage aluminum. I don't know much about it since I never used it. Do some googling about the subject.

Use real Pine-Sol, not generic. I tested on some S&S carbs and the results greatly favor Pine-Sol. I will never buy carb dip again, not even if I could get the strong Methylene Chloride they used to sell. I've done many carbs over decades and just recently tried Pine-Sol. I'm not going back to other cleaners. I do not add any water when dipping. I remove the dipped carbs now and then to agitate any crust with a light bristle brush, then put them in a pot of HOT water when done to neutralise the Pine-Sol. A rubber tipped blow gun is ideal for blowing out the carbs when using compressed air, but you can do it (outdoors) with cheap toluene carb cleaner. The Pine-Sol gets used twice as I clean floors G.I. style with a mop and bucket.

I've been known to buy generic stuff once in a while, so thanks for finding out the stuff is not the same.

How long do you leave it in the pine sol when using straight pine sol?
@peggyhodge68732 жыл бұрын
Since Pinesol is so much cheaper than Chem Dip, why didn't you use 100% Pinesol? Would have been so much better comparison.

I soak them in kerosene and then drain it and blast it with a air hose to finish it up

Your Pine-Sol method would work better if you boiled the parts in the solution.

dont ever put in gunked carbs or parts into berryman dip bucket spray them off with carb cleaner first otherwise you will ruin the dip on the first cleaning it makes a sludge at the bottom of the can parts never get clean after that.its easy enough to clean the dirt off the carb body,just saying.... dip is expensive.

good video -but u should clean the grease -and all dirt off b/4 u put in cab dip --I posted this b/4 u got to pinesol NAPA USE TO HAVE THE GOOD STUFF CALLED TIMES --BUT U CAN NOT GET IT ANY MORE --CLEANER IM REFEING TO IS BACK IN 1960-70-I DONT KNOW WHEN IT GOT PULLED OFF SHELVE --EPA -U UNDERSTAND --WHEN U PUT IN ANY CARB -IT CAME OUT NICE AND SHINY ALUMIUM IN ABOUT 3 HRS --NOT SURE ABOUT TIME

Was that stuff an orange colored liquid in a bucket? I had a bucket of carb cleaner that was orange in a blue and white can I think. Carbs came out looking like they just came out of the die cast process.
@HTMR8 жыл бұрын
The bucket had a pine sol water mix. May have looked orange due to the bucket.
@daveg16338 жыл бұрын
Mr42960 yes it was not same color as today -and it would make a carb look like it just came out of the final process -of a new carb complete --I could have go-4 gallons-or more of in 1 gallon refill cans -but I only needed it one time -so it was cost over need --it was very strong --dam>>> EPA
