Miter Gauge Build Part-2
Building some small miter gauges for use on a carbide tool bit grinder.
Final Episode
****************************************************
The AYR Cave Shop is my home man cave garage. Content includes: Obtaining tools and machines (mostly older), Cleaning up and restoring them within the limitations of a basic home shop, End goal is having a nice environment for retirement projects. I do my own automotive repairs, some of that will be included. I do a bit of Volvo Penta marine outdrive repairs as well. Mostly I’m working on projects to improve the shop. Biggest challenge is finding space, and oh yeah time. I enjoy the outdoors, hunting and some fishing, so some of that may show up on the channel. You may be wondering what’s up with the channel name; AYR Cave. When trying to think of a channel name I was also doing some research on our family clan name history. That led me to the town of AYE located in the Ayrshire region of Scotland, beautiful countryside and history, seemed like a good fit, even though we live in the USA. Machining is new to me, so expect to see improper procedures and mistakes. I’ve been a gearhead since an early age say 6 or 7 started taking things apart, went through the muscle car building phase back in the 60-70’s. My career has been in industrial HVAC service and construction that covers an incredible variety of machinery, electrical, electronic and automation equipment. I’m looking forward to full retirement, spending more time with the family, grandkids and of course the shop. Many thanks for checking out the channel…Dean

Nice build and grinder enhancements, regarding clearance you could put a spare toolbit against the fence (spacer), then the tool you will grind to prevent the gage from hitting the wheel

So I found these videos of you making miter gauges which are great. I bought an old Delta tool grinder which did not have miter gauges. I’ve been looking for over a year and very few have come up for sale. You could sell a bunch of these if they weren’t so time consuming. Great job. I live in Silvis, IL

I do like the idea, and the thumbscrew manufacturing method. Proper tool grinding is something sorely lacking in my shop, lol

I enjoyed this. You winging it is what I would be doing so it was helpful to watch. How did you make that bar that runs in the channel of the grinder?

Hi, I started out with some standard key stock But I had to mill it down because it has to be rather thin. I did that in the Bridgeport Mill sitting on some thin parallels.

Well shoot I just need a Bridgeport then is all haha. I’m in the same boat as many. I got a really nice baldor tool grinder but it doesn’t have the miter gauge. I got mine to sharpen chisel’s and plane blades. My grinder even came with white wheel luckily for that purpose but I have struggled to find a good miter gauge replacement. eBay is charging more for the gauges then I paid for the entire baldor. I’d like to find a gauge guage that can bolt on the gauge fence a taller piece of fence so I cancan last plane blades on their sides and take it to the wheel. (Vintage delta miter gauge for their tool grinder has what I am talking about). The track piece I have learned is the hardest piece to find a replacement for.

@@chaseth I don’t know if you follow Mr. Pete “ Tubalcain” he has stated a few times “I don’t know how anybody can survive without a Bridgeport mill” It’s so true, an incredibly versatile machine. lol Shoot me an email with your address information dean57ayr@gmail.com If I get some spare time, it might be a week or two I can mill a piece of stock down for you.
