I cut rifling for Proof. While I am bound by certain nondisclosure and confidentiality agreements, I can say that the resin matters. We have an Advanced Composite Research division in Ohio that keeps us on leading edge of this technology. Our resins can take more heat than any other resin on the market, and this helps with heat dissipation. Secondly, the barrels are turned so that the exterior surface looks like threads on a bolt. This acts as fluting, by decreasing weight and increasing surface area, and is done to give the resin more area to set so that the carbon fiber wind doesn't move or shift. Combined with a non-compromising Quality Control routine, we really feel this makes Proof Research the industry leader in this technology, and we have a bunch of people who really care about keeping it that way and being the best at their jobs. This is also why we are the largest cut rifling barrel manufacture in the world. Cut rifling induces less molecular stress on the bore than button or cold hammer forging. Every detail matters to us and everything we do is for a reason; we want to be the best.

Very interesting video! As an aside, fluted barrel heat has two sides to it. While fluting certainly increases the surface area and heat dissipation, it also allows the metal to heat more rapidly.

Each barrel has it's advantages and disadvantages people just seem to jump to one because they hear it's the best one out there without looking at the statistics and figuring out what they want. I'm a Christensen arms fan personal because I know the founder and my grandpa taught him in 6 grade so I know they make quality but I'm sure the other companies make good barrels too.

Hey Fitty, excellent 2 part video. Just one point to bring up about carbon fiber or any composite material for that matter... What you said about the assembly of the BSF barrel may be true for how that company assembles, but if that's the case it's not a great thing... Composite materials are asymmetric in loading strength, they're excellent in tension and poor under compression. Stiffness of any cantilever (in this case a barrel) say from bending downward is the resistance of the top surface to tension and the resistance of the bottom layer to compression. Carbon composites are so strong under tension that there's virtually no give and you don't need the bottom layer to resist compression, but if you pre-compress that composite structure(top and bottom evenly) you've reduced the strength by giving the super strong top layer some "slack."

Very concise and well-illustrated video on the theory, similarities and differences between all the barrel jacket makers. I think Proof Research gets my vote. This is sue to the "Maypole" way they criss-cross their carbon fiber strands. I have SWIX Norwegian made carbon fiber cross country racing ski poles wrapped in this exact manner and they are STIFF! No energy is wasted bending the pole, it all goes downing the packed snow of the track. And they are sooo light. BTW I also have a Norwegian made HELLE laminated blade hunting knife that is insanely sharp. This is due to the high carbon, chrome moly center laminate that forms the edge material. Love this knife but they are a bit spendy. Lots of styles but I prefer the GT model and its high quality leather sheath.

Your 2 part video was good. I bought a Dracos 22" 6.5 creedmoor barrel after watching both parts. The worst it's shot with junk ammo is 1.5moa and the best is .75moa at 200 yards so far I'm only 35 rounds into breaking it in. There was no wind and the shooting was off a bench with heavy bags and good support. For the price the barrel is more accurate then most cheaper barrels i've bought (sometimes you get really lucky with a cheap barrel). However the barrel has such little whip i don't lose my line through the scope until 24x magnification. I'm very happy with it and would recommend. Maybe as it breaks in I could get towards .5 moa? Maybe not, idk. What I can say is it dosen't care if its 120 grain sst, 140 berger, or 147eldx, they all shoot very similarly.

I think the Proof wrapped barrel is stiffer than the tensioned BSF barrel and may get tighter groups. There is the small possibility that the carbon fiber may de-laminate (small separations between the cf and barrel) but that's a small chance.

Cool vid, I'm considering a BSF, very informative. FWIW I don't think the tuning of the cartridge to the node really makes sense. I've heard several people say that but the logic is off to me as MV can very quite a bit even with an otherwise identical cartridge. The level of fouling and most of all the temps can swing MV by large margins. If a load was tuned to the node then it would only be consistent at one temperature.

Missing a huge factor with bsf. Machining the barrel after boring the rifling can and will add heat to the steele. In a world where a thousand of an inch is a big deal and button filling vs single point cut rifling makes a difference do you want to risk a bit of warping?

I just ordered one of these barrels. It's a 24.5" Creedmoor 6.5 fluted one. I'll give a full review of it once it arrives, is spec'd out, assembled, "broken in" and range tested. I've chatted with BSF a few times (really good customer service BTW) and like the product. One concern I do have is that as heat is added to the barrel, it will, slightly, length due to expansion. That will cause the stretching effect to be lessened somewhat. Will that impact the amplitude of the cycle enough to harm accuracy? I will find out! Cold though, these, should, be exceptionally accurate. I'll do both fast (less than 5 seconds slow down between shots) and slow (one minute cool down between shots) to see how the barrel reacts.

Its been 5 years ..... what are your long term thoughts on the BSF vs Proof Research carbon fiber barrels? Which one seems to handle heat/high rates of fire better? Which one seems to be more accurate? And the thing I'm most interested in, which one seems more durable? Have you shot out either of the barrels yet? Or both? Really wondering which one will send more rounds down range before needing replaced.
@FittyACTUAL
@FittyACTUAL Жыл бұрын
I honestly dont think I'll ever shoot enough to wear out a barrel, but I have shot each barrel enough times to have an opinion. The best "bang for your buck" would be BSF and I also believe the BSF barrel might outlast the others due to more steel material for the barrel remaining. In coming out with a "covid build" for a precision .223 wylde using a BSF barrel. Im also going to come out with another CF barrel video to include one from Wolfpack Armory.
@RefinedRandy
@RefinedRandy Жыл бұрын
@@FittyACTUAL awesome info, thank you for the reply! I had no idea the BSF has thicker steel walls, but it makes sense since the CF isn't adding any "burst strength" due to the air pocket. Good to hear that they're plenty durable though! One last question, do you think fluted or nonfluted? Seems like the concensus is that fluted cools faster but also heats up faster. Plus fluted is apparently less rigid due to there being less material. As long as it wouldn't be detrimental to the reliability of a defense/SHTF rifle, I'd probably go fluted just bc it looks cool lol.
@FittyACTUAL
@FittyACTUAL Жыл бұрын
@Refined Randy when it comes to a BSF fluted barrel there's still a lot of steel left for the barrel to retain rigidity. Plus the tensioning of the steel barrel from the carbon tube adds more rigidity. Fluting adds more surface area for cooling but the steel will still only heat up at the same rate as a non fluted barrel.

Hand loading to tune a cartridge to correspond to a rifle node suggests you have a way to measure that frequency. What meters are you using to do that analysis or are you just testing different loads to see what's most accurate in your rifle? As an example, two otherwise identical rifles may like different types of ammunition. Are you saying to get the most rigid barrel possible and then experiment to see what ammo does best, or are you proposing some more scientific method that literally measures vibration in the barrel?

Thank you for this wonderful information. Unfortunately I am still not sure which barrel to go for. One of the issues that confuses me is that carbon fiber barrels reduces the weight which sounds good, but also I know that reduction of weight can increase the recoil and harmonic. I am not quite sure till now which choice if carbon fiber barrels is best to maintain a good accuracy, less heat, low recoil and low weight especially that I am going to .338 lapuaMag. I have to find the right one that gives a fair companion of all 4 factors. I can't sacrifice recoil for weight or weight for recoil forexample. I have to find a barrel that doesn't sacrify any of them but not necessarily have perfection in one factor. I would really appreciate your advice on that if you have came to more knowledge about them. Thank you
