The terms "handmade" and "high tech" are not commonly found in the same sentence, but they both apply to a Rice University method to quickly produce fibers from microscopic carbon nanotubes.
The method developed by the Rice lab of chemist Matteo Pasquali allows researchers to make short lengths of strong, conductive fibers from bulk nanotubes in about an hour.
The work complements Pasquali's pioneering 2013 method to spin full spools of thread-like nanotube fibers for aerospace, automotive, medical and smart-clothing applications. The fibers look like cotton thread but perform like metal wires and carbon fibers.
It can take weeks to prepare nanotubes to make long fibers, but the new method cuts that down to size, even if it does require a bit of hands-on processing.
Pasquali and lead author and graduate student Robby Headrick reported in Advanced Materials that aligning and twisting the hair-like fibers is fairly simple.

When will they make longer nanotubes? That would really be revolutionary, as it could make much stronger composites than carbon fiber.

Would it be possible to turn carbon nanotubes into guitar stings for an electric guitar? And if so, what would the possible sound be like?
@ThomasAndersonbsf
@ThomasAndersonbsf 3 жыл бұрын
I have had an idea that would use nano tube and deposition tech to make a stringed instrument string that both produces electricity from the vibration, so the pulses are from the string moving, directly, and would produce a light along its length, brighter the harder plucked LOL

Thanks for the video! So, is that product that you pulled from the glass kind of like a rope/cord of several CNTs? What's its diameter and current tensile strength?

How it compares to graphene?
@AtlasReburdened
@AtlasReburdened 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, on par with our bulk conductor electrically, but where are we landing as far as tensile strength? Ultralight transmission cables are neat, and would solve certain "problems" but a space elevator solves a whole lot more of them. If we can get there and we already have the problem of transporting power along the length inherently handled, it really wouldn't matter if the cost was several orders or magnitude above bulk structural metals or conductors. The investment would be easily worth the incredible potential profits of owning a low cost space port, and some multi billionaire somewhere is inevitably already drooling over the prospect.

also could generate and direct power if solar pannles are integreated above the atmosphere where they could get more direct light exposure
@AtlasReburdened
@AtlasReburdened 2 жыл бұрын
@@Digitallifeconcepts Very true. Even if conditions on the ground are dry blue sky with sun dead overhead, panels just outside the atmosphere will generate 30%+ more power. Not to mention the fact that rain, snow, cloud and dust don't affect them at all. The one impediment I can think of for this schema is that low voltage DC power is terrible over long lines, so there would either have to be a massive sister array of inverters and transformers to make it high voltage AC to send down the line, or some method of 'beaming' the power down via laser or maser.

Hi yes, you can make/enhance clothing from CNT yarns and fibers DexMat has completed circuits in fabrics to show how conductive and flexible the fibers are. dexmat.com/application/sewing-cnt-wire-in-fabric-demo/ Also, NASA has done testing showing the fibers can be wired to repel dust in space. dexmat.com/aerospace/space-dust-repelling-carbon-nanotube-fibers/
