Last week I talked about the theory behind anki burnout. Today I’ll show you how to make cards (hopefully) sans burnout! Stick around for this hopefully helpful tutorial!
Check out my last video talking about anki burnout: the dark side of anki | how to use anki to prevent burnout pt 1
Here’s the website I use to convert characters to pinyin: www.branah.com/chinese-to-pinyin
Here’s the link to language reactor: www.languagereactor.com/
Here’s the anki plugin i use for adding audio (AwesomeTTS): ankiweb.net/shared/info/14365...
Time stamps:
00:10 - do you have signs of anki burnout?
01:43 - single card vs batch imports?
02:43 - language reactor - plugin to download character dialogue from immersive material
03:29 - how do i make cards myself?
05:33 - my master excel sheet
07:57 - importing from excel (csv file) to anki
11:01 - browsing through my cards
12:07 - how to make your own master excel sheet
12:44 - how to add pinyin (batch convert)
14:57 - how to add audio (AwesomeTTS)
17:48 - final thoughts

This was really helpful! I just started Anki yesterday and it's a bit overwhelming. But all of your videos make it so much easier to understand and use :)

Aww thank you for the comment :) yeah, anki can be overwhelming, but it’s just a tool like any other language learning aids. Tools have things they do best, and other things they can kinda do, and some where it’s best you choose another tool (you can theoretically use a hammer to remove a screw but why would you if you have a screwdriver?) . Finding which tools work best for you is also a part of learning!!!

I think if you're motivated enough you won't burnout you'll just change things up if it doesn't seem to be working.

totally agree! I think many of us in the language learning community (probably even more prevalent in the language acquisition camp) view anki as REQUIRED for learning. yea, it speeds things up, but if it doesn't work for you, then it doesn't work for you. but because it's part of the so-called process, people stick through with it until they hate language learning itself. but if anki works for you, the way you make cards and review cards could also be impacting your ability to tolerate reps! doing cards that have little relevance to your immersion and study material seems so terrible to me (I used to do that) because I have nothing else to connect it to. hence burnout.

Thanks for the great video (and all your other videos/content!). A little off topic: did you tweak the Anki settings? And if yes, could you tell us what you changed (and why)?
@bianca.phdinprogress

I actually didn’t tweak anything! I wanted to make it as easy for everyone as possible, and it’s working out very well for my own studies without tweaking!

Thanks for the video! I don't quite understand the audio process though. Your excel file had the audios in them, but in your example for the TTS you created a single card. How can I batch create the audios? Or do you batch import the cards without audio and then add the TTS files manually to each one?
@bianca.phdinprogress
@bianca.phdinprogress 2 жыл бұрын
I you can do either!! I’ll be making a video soon dedicated to the step by step process of making the cards, which will include the batch audio import (it’s a pretty roundabout way unfortunately) and single card.

Very interesting video!! Do you have any tips on how to get used to chinese grammar? Sometimes I find it difficult to change mind from english to chinese mode
@bianca.phdinprogress

so i'm still working on this actually! for me, I emphasize not translating a sentence from chinese to english when I read or review my flashcards (that's why I don't include sentence translations on my anki decks). So while I read or listen to chinese, It's actually easy for me to understand the chinese as chinese. I don't have an issue with converting it to english grammar structures. But when I try to speak, thats when the english version come in. The easier grammar structures are pretty easy to produce in a chinese manner (like 我在饭店吃饭:I, at the restaurant, eat food) but its the more advanced structures that always slip. That just takes more exposure and more time unfortunately. One thing that has been very useful for me though is thinking of an idea that i'm trying to convey and trying to translate it into chinese. I want to convey this thought, so if I were a native chinese speaker, how would I say it. After trying to translate, I then give it to my partner (he's a native speaker) for him to correct it. That way I know when I tend to use english-ized versions of chinese grammar. After memorizing those sentences/paragraphs too, it'll be easier to use them in more regular situations because it's not a random sentence in a textbook. It's something that you, as an individual, would actually say in real life.
