What I love about hopper is you get a sense of both personas he retains: The “devil may care” attitude working in a small town he believes he knows so well and is so sure it can’t surprise him, so he slacks around and takes nothing seriously , including his own life But the minute SHTF we get the hard boiled dutiful detective who always finds the truth by any means necessary and revels in the gore and dirt for the details. And has the mentality of no one left behind and sees every job unflinching until the end. After the first season , he seems to be more aware and alert than previously and retains his hard boiled persona... then its refortified and given a heavy dose of selfless love when he finally inherits a child. Jim grows up. Jim becomes stronger and more resilient and willing to believe in the impossible and still meet it with perseverance ... but he doesn’t do it so unflinching, he has something to fight for, his daughter... Third season he is constantly on the alert...he has a taste of family and wants to protect it. That family grows in a sense and he’ll live and die for them all.
