Awesome close-up footage of a brilliant red cardinal feeding a fat catapillar to two baby cardinals who fell out of the nest.

I have a little family of cardinals right outside my window. The little baby makes cricket noises when she is hungry and it's usually her dad feeding her. They are so unbelievably precious. A world without birds is a godforsaken place.

An excellent example of parents continuing to take care of their young even after they fell from nest. Does'nt always happen but here they are making the effort. The problem is these babbies are too small to clamour up branches, so predators are a big problem for them. By chance , do you know if the female sat over them at night them at night. They do this while still in the nest , interesting to see if they did it on the ground.

poor babies. you're right! this is highly dangerous for these chicks. in a situation like this, if you can locate the nest, you should pick the babies up and place them back into the nest. i've done it--and the parents immediately went right back to feeding.

Beautiful! I can't believe you captured that! I didn't know that the males did (at least some of) the feeding.

I'm curious why the babies aren't in a nest. Perhaps the wind may have blown them out of it. Any passing predator, a cat, maybe, would just gobble them up when mama is out looking for food.

The male bird is the one who is busy here. Don't you worry; he and his mate will be here more often than the camera (great idea) can capture.

@floratink You're only seeing two feeding sessions - they'll go back & forth with feeding. Also, the parent you're seeing in this video is the father (females are mostly grey).

These are flegdling birds, they're SUPPOSED to be out of the nest at this stage. They take this time to finish growing and to learn how to fly, which can take as long as a week after leaving the nest. Too many people mistake flegdlings as fallen babies and take them in. It's best to leave them alone in situations like this. Worst case scenario; a hawk or snake gets a well deserved meal.

@5Nadmor5 They are migratory birds, the Migratory Bird act makes it illegal to own these and almost every single other type of birds commonly found. This extreme law should be amended to allow owning birds as pets with a permit.

no, nanoguy4098, they're NOT FLEDGLINGS. a fledgling has wings and can fly a bit. i did look before commenting--i checked to see how developed they were. you should look at their wings too--these are still babies. regarding 'leaving them alone' -- not good for the very reason you point out--ground predators. much better to put them back in the nest if poss, or at least onto a branch near the trunk. you are, of course, right--taking them home is unnecessary, not helpful, and often illegal.
