Native plant spotlight on the Cardinal flower or Lobelia cardinalis. Something that I did not mention in the video is this plant is NOT deer resistant. I have seen many sites indicating it is a deer resistant plant but I have not found that to be the case.

I found three cardinal flower plants, growing in a deep drainage ditch, at a sugar cane plantation. Dug the ugliest one, brought it home, and it’s thriving. Waiting for flowers. (Louisiana)

I think here in central florida this plant thrives best in moist dappled sun/shade. Our 3 month-long summer period of 90F+ days coupled with extremely high UV levels and soil that quickly degenerates to dry beach sand ( when exposed to full sunlight) isn’t the most ideal for them.

What was the other plant blooming in your other patch? It looked like it was about to bloom yellow.

Hi Stacey! I think that was hypericum punctatum or spotted st. john's wort. It's a great plant because it stands up well without staking, the leaves have a really pretty glaucous tint to them and the tiny flowers are adorable. This isn't a show stopper, but a really nice plant to have to fill in areas. It also start developing its rosettes really early in the season which is nice to see some green in the garden when very little else is. Talk later!
