Bodys is the only csh song ive listened to and I really liked it, now knowing how deeper the meaning of it goes I like it even more, especially the relatability of being in the closet and unable to express feelings in public (even if it means no longer seeing it as just an upbeat indie song), really great video!

19:12 I always thought this lyric was “When we’re dead… when we’re” instead of “When we dance… when we” I like to think it’s a double-entendre and that the first (“incorrect”) way of hearing it gives it another meaning; that they’ll forget their awkwardness when they’re dead too. They can’t have shame when they’re too busy dancing and when they’re dead. Another life/death comparison. Great video!!! I love this song!

i got into car seat headrest from an unhealthy relationship i had funny enough. i always identified twin fantasy even in the the middle of the relationship, it was my first queer experience so i was slow to realize the faults in both me and him. twin fantasy always felt like a relationship falling apart due to both parties not communicating and one putting more in than the other. my favorite songs currently are 2:24, when will my man come, a good bridge to never cross, napoleon, psst teenagers (3), Oh! starving (3), and famous prophets (minds) (edited for spelling mistakes)

Thanks for the video! Right now, my favorite csh song is The Ballad of the Costa Concordia. The third and fourth verses(?) starting with the line "Let us take you back to where we came in" goes so fucking hard. That section of the song so perfectly articulates the angst of realizing the root of the problem with the broader social order while simultaneously understanding that you as an individual are completely irrelevant to its continuation or betterment. The "I give up"s and the force by which they are repeated show just how painful and violent and persistent the feeling has to be to push through in a way that can be heard, and how exhausting (not freeing) the feeling is. I'm also reading The Denial of Death right now and its very interesting to see how ideas from that book inform the entire album (the idea of "Cosmic Hero" being the most obvious example of this).
@CardinalWest
@CardinalWest 2 жыл бұрын
I've always loved how they reused the chords from Hi Life on the intro of Ballad, just altered slightly. And I also love those lines near the ending - they manage to both hit really hard and yet be quite funny, in a morbid way: Stopped at the borderline, they stripped his disguise So he read a book that won a Pulitzer prize It was about death It didn't help He saw himself in it And he was disturbed at the conclusions that it led to But he couldn't say what because the author was dead too And so though he made fun of us, he has now become one of us

I've always seen the "Don't you realize our bodies could fall apart at any second" lyric as will stating that the relationship is getting "serious" and hinting at the fact that they have a link that isn't exclusively physical, like they are connected beyond their physical barriers and are now intertwined in an emotional/affective way. beyond their bodies.

That was a great analysis! I also love hearing people talk about CSH's music lmao. Honestly, I first discovered some of their songs through a friend. I think those were "Sober to Death" and "Bodys" as well as some from Monomania. At the time I was vaguely aware of the connections between different songs but didn't read too much into it/understand the narrative. One day I decided to actually listen to more of Twin Fantasy. I ended up listening to Beach Life-in-Death and my God, I instantly fell in love with that song. I think it was the first part that truly reeled me in, it really brought some vivid imagery to my mind and conveyed meaning in a way I wasn't used to. I felt a sense of connection to the song. There was still so much left unsaid and it felt intriguing. As the song progressed and different ideas emerged and were explored throughout it, I just knew it was one of the best songs I've ever heard. To this day it remains my favourite CSH song. BLID was what really pushed me to listen to the rest of TF and truly appreciate it, as well as go on to give other parts of the discography a try. It really serves its role well, and understanding it was what made me appreciate the overarching narrative as well. The experiences outlined in the song also just speak to me a tonne, and I was greatly surprised with how someone was able to put all of it into words. TF (both versions) and Monomania remain my favourite albums overall, it's really fascinating how one band's music can affect you.
@CardinalWest
@CardinalWest 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I certainly understand why BLID seems to be the go-to song for much of the fanbase. On my first listen to the entire album, by the time I got a few minutes into BLID I was mesmerized, though I think the moment it fully clicked for me as a masterpiece was when Stop Smoking gets called back to in the middle of High to Death.

Thanks! I'll have to give some thought about what song I'd like to cover next time. I do really love Hey, Space Cadet, but Famous Prophets and Beach Life-In-Death also have tons of depth to them (as do Boxing Day and The Gun Song from NYM), so I guess we'll see.

When I first listened to Twin Fantasy, I thought of Bodys as just a catchy song because of the more upbeat vibe. The more I listened to the album, though, the more I loved it for the lyrics. Man, I was afraid to click this video because I associate(d) Bodies with one of the lowest points of my life (missing my gf far away and fearing for our relationship because of the distance) where I related to a much more depressing interpretation of this. But I’m so glad I did, you really put a much more hopeful interpretation into my perspective helping me enjoy the song the way I used to. Away from the anxiety of losing the frail happiness in life and appreciating and celebrating it because it’s beautiful and special because of this frailty. The vulnerability and anxiety is still there but it’s worth it pushing through. The happiness can be found. (My gf and I are still together and happier than ever) Thank you. Also my other csh favourites are drunk drivers/ killer whales, knife in the coffee, something soon and fill in the blank

The line in Beach Life-in Death “I don’t want to go insane, I don’t want to have schizophrenia” is incredibly impactful to me. My family has a long history of mental illness and violence that extends to myself unfortunately. I never want to hurt anyone with my issues, and it’s terrifying thinking that it is a possibility should things ever get worse.

Oh I love Bodys, it has been my top song of the year on spotify 2 years in a row! But I think my favorite csh song has to be Beach Life-in-Death, at least in 2020 it was. There's a certain niche that song fills when you're 17 and stressed out of your mind, so it had a certain something to it then. I really have been liking the new album recently though, I like Deadlines (hostile) and (thoughtful) a lot, though I like thoughtful more, and despite how much other fans seem to not like them for being different, I like Can't Cool Me Down and Hollywood a lot too. There's a lot of good ones to choose from! The whole twin fantasy album in general is just so good as a whole piece to listen to at once that I would even count listening to that start to finish as it's own thing

Great video! Too good actually, watching it made me wish I went into the same depth with the music I listen to. This channel introduced me to CSH, I think it was a Q & A video (which I can't find) where you recommended Twin Fantasy. I listened to it and was hooked immediately, then the High to Death video came out right after I got into it. I listened to Twin Fantasy for a while, and have started making my way down the discography through Teens of Style, How to Leave Town, and now Teens Of Denial. Recently I had a stressful move and now I find myself with a long commute on the bus. With nothing to do but listen to music Teens of Denial has been a big help. In particular rocking out to Destroyed by Hippie Powers and (Joe Gets Kick Out of School for Using) Drugs is also really good. For other songs I like: The Ballad of the Costa Concordia interested me with the title. Not knowing the lyrics or its relationship to other tracks, it seems very random. I don't even know how much of it is actually about the ship. It did get me to rewatch Internet Historians video about it though. The lyrics "Now we download all our shit for free" commute "I used to like the morning, I'd survived another night". Also on Twin Fantasy, Stop Smoking (We Love You) is nice and simple, I actually found the chords online and learned it on guitar.

Noticed that you put los borrochos as one of CSH's "greatest songs" and I'm happy to hear that my most recent obsession isn't without merit. Instead of having a song that you highlighted in your video, I'd like to say that dreams fall hard is probably one of my favorite songs on NYM. The backing piano throughout the song is a nice treat that we don't get to hear a lot in CSH songs (kinda helps me realize that a lot of my favorite csh songs use instruments that aren't conventionally in their songs. Costa Concordia and the trumpet, ending of Dramamine and it's heavy synth use). Dreams fall hard almost feels like a melancholic take on bodys, ironically enough. Will confessing love and desperately holding onto it despite the external factors that come with it.

When I first heard Los Borrachos a while ago, I didn't really care for it, but when I re-listened to Monomania in one sitting earlier this year, something about it just clicked for me - it might be one of my top 10 CSH songs now. And one of my favorite unconventional uses of an instrument is on Misheard Lyrics, where the piano is almost used as a bassline.

Oh dang haha, I was hoping I had gotten the correct lyrics for that section (since it's really hard to hear everything except "this one has grown old and bitter," and I know certain lines, especially background ones, got changed on a few tracks between MtM and FtF), but the sources I checked all had these. Good catch though! Off the top of my head, my interpretation of the FtF lines on Bodys would be referencing the disconnect between the two people in the relationship, and how rather than actually communicating, they are simply imagining an idealized version of the other with whom they communicate, that is really just an extension of their own desires (and, to use the imagery of a hand-puppet, literally of their own bodies), relating to the overall "fantasy" of the album. But the singer seems to be recognizing this to some extent here, asking if it might just be better to "pull out the nail" (end their connection) and do the painful, but ultimately healthy thing of breaking up and moving on.

The "I would speak this to you in song" verses defiantly come off as a gay kid before 2010-2015 or so. You have to let the person you are talking to know you are hitting on them but nobody else can know. Talking about being aware of romantic advances in such an awkward almost covert manner... yeah. Yep, I had to do that, ran away as soon as I could.

My favorite song honestly has to be Souls. For the longest time Monomania was really underrated, but I think Souls is the strongest emotional moment of the whole Twin fantasy and monomania narrative, and I honestly kinda prefer monomania to twin fantasy sometimes, even if it is a little less cohesive.

cant discuss their songs since I'm not into this style of production and 'dirty' mixing. If I were, I would probably be more into black metal as well. For non standard structures and time signatures I personally go for longer Devin Townsand's songs, King Crimson, HAKEN or Ningen Isu. As for lyrics I don't really go for much interpretation anymore. King Crimson has some depth to theirs, Insomnium too. Omnium Gatherum has that unique style of lyrics, when they at first glance appear to be really simplistic and written by someone who doesn't know English very well (which is partially true) but are actually pretty poetic and allow for many interpretations. I know you care about Car Seat Headrest stuff more than random metal bands, so in semi-similar post-rock/alt-rock style to that I can only recommend stuff you probably know- Explosions in the Sky's album Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. Or old classics like Interpol's Turn On the Bright Lights or Silversun Pickup's Carnavas (they also like distorted guitar stuff)

I don't want to have schizophrenia!" as a teen just starting to display signs of mental illness, with a family history of schizophrenia and bipolar, cemented the song as one of my favourites.
