"sore muscles" is not the best way to guage overtraining in cardio. Overtraining in cardio manifests it'self in the cardiovascular system. The long held tried and true test for overtraining lies in the inability to get your heart rate up to your typical levels on harder efforts. Watch your heart rate if you've been training a lot. If you are very adept at bike riding and swimming, and you go for a 5-10 mile run, your'e going to get sore due to the lack of muscale adaptation. So sore muscles in training cardio can be misleading

Thanks Coach Greg!

Naah I agree with Coach Greg from the past, do the cardio you actually enjoy and can do for the rest of your life. Not something other people are telling you to do and you will possibly permanently quit after a few days/weeks. I love interval training (not HIT) on the threadmill, some walking, some running, it makes me feel like back in the day when I was playing a lot of sports. I burn a lot of calories this way, can keep it up for an hour per session, and can hit the weights right after for some full body training. I feel exercised enough to feel the runners high, but not so tired/sore that I can't do anything after. It's the perfect cardio for me. Stairs, bicycle, and most of the other machines on the other hand I can do for ~10-15 mins max until I get bored, sore, or absolutely hate my life.

Top-notch video with quality tips. My current routine is push (Mondays) pull (Wednesdays) legs (Fridays), with incline treadmill walking 5 days a week. On days that I lift and do cardio, I'll lift first thing in the morning and do cardio late afternoon. I walk 30 minutes Mon-Wed-Fri, and 45 minutes Tuesdays and Thursdays - current settings are 10% incline with 3.5 MPH speed. My heart rate is squarely within Zone 2. If you're thinking about starting incline treadmill walking, the best tips I can give you are never hold the treadmill and start with an incline that you can walk on for 15 minutes before working your way up to 30+.

I have been doing tabata training, which is like a short, super burst HIIT that takes less than ten minutes. I do it three days per week, and it makes my heart want to run away from my body. I was doing them after resistance training, but now I do them in separate days because, short as it is, I drop dead after the last 20 seconds set. I have a stationary bike, I am going to try using it after resistance training because I recover faster from it. Thanks coach for this excellent video.

It’s all about getting into a routine…over the last 11 months I have made it apart if my routine to do my cardio all 7 days of the week no matter what kind of day I had. It’s to the point where I don’t feel right unless I get my cardio done. I go on average I would say about 90 mins a day and will give or take maybe 30 mins. I always do it on a fasted stomach as well and have been continuously improving my body composition. I went from 215 at my absolute worst at 5’9” with a small frame so it was more like 300 on a normal guy and now I’m down to 150. Im in the best mental and physical shape I’ve ever been in.

Hello coach Greg, I follow you for a few weeks, I did my very first natural bodybuilding competition, I even did it without taking any supplements, (yeah it was my personal challenge to see how far I can go). I did it during my masters 1 degree year and while working in a software company part time, it was absolutely amazing !!!! I did 6 out of 24 in classic physique !!! Now I stopped to focus on my studies, and I train like 4-6 times a week : 2-3 grit (strength and Cardio) with 2-3 lifting weight. I try to maintain the body I archievend , maingain, I try to watch calories During the competition I weight 80kg, now 87-88, I look perfectly for me… do you think I can maingain with that rythm (I follow the calorie intake, but I am not strict, I wanna eat what I want with moderation) I would be honored to have your advice. Thank you. Take care (Ps: I always go harder than last time during my grit, it’s my absolute favorite training !!! I JUST LOVE BEING ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED in the end😂😂)

@terminatortrainingmethod8168 Жыл бұрын
Great video Greg! However, I would use a few more metrics than "soreness" to gauge whether you're doing too much (e.g. stress levels, overall fatigue, gym performance decrements, appetite changes, sleep disturbance, resting AM heart rate, cardio improvements or plateaus, strength loss, joint pain, etc). I'm all about simplifying things, but this is a bit too rudimentary IMO. E.g. Some people get sore despite doing very little cardio (as you said in your example), and others do way too much but don't get very sore (despite it negatively effecting other aspects of their life/health). If anything, getting sore means you should probably do it more often but perhaps start with less intensity. Also, different cardio modalities result in different levels of soreness. Someone running 8 hours per week is going to be more sore than someone swimming, biking, & rowing for 8 combined hours per week. Also, losing gains in the gym from cardio doesn't necessarily mean you're doing too much. More often than not (extreme cases aside), eating too little is the culprit for cardio interfering with muscle gains. Adding cardio into your training plan requires more calories if you want to maintain, and especially gain muscle. Just a couple thoughts, take them or leave them.
@mh84949 ай бұрын
imo the best cardio by far is cycling. especially when you're in a calorie surplus, that's when you can make the most gains in your thresh hold power and when you decide to cut weight you will have the advantage of high calorie burn rate.

Coach can you make a video about how much exercise someone can and how much should they train when after a period of resting after training hard for a season and gained muscle mass but due to resting time, the amount of calories goes down tremendously. And after training not hungry. Instead I feel lighter and I can feel how I'm hitting the chest muscle more than before, when I used to feel it more on the arms. Also form and supination tension went up. What should I do? Train another season harder then last time or should I enjoy the gains and focus on the fun.
