Ricardo Dicksalot CEOs at corporations don’t even interact with low level associates. Same goes for those in the military. It’s taboo to try to buddy up with a CO or Admiral when you are at a junior level. It would be more detrimental than helpful. Dumbest advice I ever heard.

It seems risky but it's pretty true. Employers know everyone puts their best facade on for the interview, but you see the real them when they start working. Best just to save them that step. The hard part is getting through the HR people that haven't figured out they're hiring for departments besides their own.

Machine learning models or statistical studies generally have the pre-existing assumption that the data are correct, but it doesn't hurt to first try and falsify that assumption before you continue on your study/modeling.

I just realized something. Every time I went into an interview when I was sick with a cold or flu or something and told my interviewers to excuse my sickness, I always got the job. Always. Whenever I went in and was healthy and smiling, I was always passed up. I'm going to test this theory in my next interview but I really think companies love that you're willing to push aside your own health for the good of the company. It gets them off or something.

This is how every HR person is. They have no clue about anything and always recommend for the job the psychopath that is able to trick them. The best interviews are with the engineers themselves. They know what they need and it's very hard to trick them. What can I say, probably an engineer understands more about human than a psychology graduate does, which I assume a person that works in HR is.

@ThisIsReal Actually, for HR professional, you need to have a degree in Human Resource, business administration, economics, or psychology (work psychology or organisational psychology). All these degrees can be in undergraduate or graduate levels depending on which university or college you went to and what company are you applying for. A lot of HR professional aren't like that, but some of them are like what you meant. I know this is a reply way latter than your original. Still just wanted to share the information i have. Depends on the engineers. They might be old school and look at things like machine learning with fear, and don't want to hire someone who doesn't have a lot of demonstrated experience with it. But depending on the application, machine learning can be easy to do now with tools like PyTorch, and someone less experienced might still be up for the task.

The best career advice I ever got wasn’t even a person like lady in the video or any career trainer or school it was some random dude with a good job I was playing hold em in a casino one day. we were chit chatting and I asked him how you did such a good job I tried so hard to find one. I had an decent job before I was let go and so many job offers are from black companies who just want slaves. He told me this “Birds of a feather flock together” I was confused I didn’t understood what he mean he sighed and said look who knows you I told him yeah my friends and family and he said that do they have connections or are they working the same crappy jobs you can only find. You need to find the places where the people with the connections you want are or you will never get anywhere “You think HR will help you it’s not in their best interest to find the right person for the job” you make friends and connections with the right managers they will open doors for you. And I find this true just going where the rich people are and have that fake it till you make strategy make friends with the right people has done more for me in my career than any advice I ever had gotten from career counselors and videos like this.

Here is my advice: 1. Don't concern yourself too much with trying too find a job you love, istead try making the best of the options available to you. 2. Even if you do not have a choice but take the job, in the interview you should make an effort to figure out how much you will like or hate it. 3. After getting a job give it a serious try, even if its not perfect. 4. Do not be afraid to switch jobs if you come across something better, or just leave the job if you really hate it.

I am a degreed accountant and did so good at data entry (downloading and inputting checks) when we were shorthanded that it is now "my responsibility" to make sure it gets done. @@ivanlagrossemoule Success has an important drawback. You have to pay upfront. This means that you have to make the extra effort upfront and then you MAY get the results. Either as an employee, a freelancer, an executive or an entrepreneur. As a professional (employee or not) you are judged on your current performance not what you did 3 years ago. What you did 3 years ago may have defined your current position and salary, but cannot keep you at the work. It plays a small role, but the current performance and situation plays a much more important one. Finally, if you work for an organization, having a good performance is not enough. The organization should have a good performance as well.

If you are an employee that's how the game is played. Typically, if you are much better than the rest your being promoted and compensated more. Of course there is a culture fit element as well. If the organization does not offer meritocracy, most probably you have to find another one that does.

Well, because that is exactly how they do those decisions, but it is not purely their fault. Basically, they have no objective instruments to select, all of the tools they have are a joke. Yet, they are held accountable for the "wrong" hiring. So, what does a person do when they are held accountable for something that they can't control? Use your gut feeling, experience and bias + make decisions based on evidences(certificates, etc.).

Love your reactions 😄 but then honestly, I've been kinda watching the first lady's channel, and she's got like 600K subscribers... people are watching her stuff and find it good. Is that the reason many US people can't get a job? :) Listening to all the wrong advice? But then AGAIN, I've heard that crazy HR questions at the screening interviews are NORM in the States. Here, in both Ukraine and Russia, nobody cares about your favorite colors or what spiritual animal you are (what the heck is that?..). I run a remote software development company, and we have three stages of interviews for our candidates: test task (tech), tech interview with our CTO and me. My CTO tests the candidate's ability to answer LOGIC and PROGRAMMING questions online/real time, I test the candidate's overall sanity, English level and all the administrative questions (like, his availability, his current situation - whether or not it will affect the work results - etc. And the final stage is the interview with the customer (mostly, our customers are US companies). I am always present at those interviews and THIS is where the questions like "what was your most stressful situation and how you solved it" are being asked. That's crazy. "Tell me an example of miscommunication and how you solved it". I mean, okay, that's not the worst questions, but I do understand that for the onsite workers, those questions get crazier. ...Another reason I LOVE working remotely. Or I'm just getting old and lazy.

I want to leave where I am cos I'm underpaid despite 2 years of good performance and solving plenty of longstanding issues that were there for years before I join, but I'm rejected for good roles out there after I shared my current pay, cos it's way too low for the new job and it made them think I'm probably bad at my job that's why I am paid so badly... 😕

Im a tech recruiter and while I think her advice could be good for a select group, it is very specific advice that probably only applies to one specific person on her mind. Best advice I can give: recognize that interviewers are people too. Some people are good at it, some are not. Some people interview well and some dont, from both sides. If you can think about this, you can work with the interviewer better to solve the problem together of are you a fit for the role. Not just a q and a session thats honestly usually arbitrarily picked from a google search.

My job takes advantage of their better employees constantly. They won't say anything to the people who don't work, or do as little as they can get away with. The fast people end up expected to do our jobs AND their jobs on a regular basis, we're the ones who get micromanaged and griped at by management, and when we finally put our foot down and refuse to do any job but our own, we get treated like we're lazy. It's infuriating and burns out a lot of good employees. Edit: I'm guessing a lot of this advice has worked for her because it's obvious she's easily manipulatable and bosses love that shit.

The issue could be in your CV or cover letter. LinkedIn networking is a powerful tool, but I would start with an ATS-friendly CV + cover letter that's short, relevant and effective

Career advisors are better off being honest about who HRs will not hire, and how to prepare for some work arounds, than all the stuff about making your dream career come true. Like when you search online about age discrimination there isn’t a lot of useful content because no HR wants to say anything about it.

I guess my advice in software development, is find a few recruiting companies in the region you want to work in, contact them, and have them look for jobs for you, set you up with interviews/job prospects. I pretty much have contacts at 5 companies in my region, and if I need a new job, I just contact them, and they line up interviews for me, and negotiate salary for me(only useful if at will/permanent, if contract you will have to negotiate against the recruiting company). Typically I get several interviews a week and have 1 or 2 offers come my way by month's end. Note: When they ask if they can send your resume to company A, make sure to only say yes if they are the first one's to ask if you have several competing recruiters. I have not personally applied for a job in 5 years, but always find stuff. Advice 2, accept all these recruiters that want to be contacts on Linked In, ignore the constant emails for jobs when you are not interested, when you are interested, reply to those positions they send your way or contact them directly through LinkedIn.

@@jameslivermore4481 Well for at will/permanent, they don't. They charge the employer a percentage of your first year salary on top of what you would get, and typically get me more money than I would have been able to get myself(unless you want to go the independent contractor/freelancer route), as for contract they do you are correct, however recruiting firms usually have access to jobs that are not available on the broader market, since they aren't posted, so you can have advantages here, as well you tend to have a friendly face introduce your resume to the employer, and get way more interviews that way, once I get to the interview I usually shine and get the job, as well if at will/permanent it is in their best interest to get you top dollar and know the market value better than you sometimes. Thing is this is career advice, and tons of people have a hard time finding well paying jobs, and getting top dollar, so this beats blindly applying on indeed for stuff and negotiating pay yourself, as well I get more interviews having 5 people looking for work for me, instead of just myself. If ontop of being a great developer you are great at getting clients and making and keeping business relationships, and can land these positions yourself without a middlemen to do that leg work for you, then great you will definitely get even more money, but I am not the best at that personally, and I get paid quite well.

I have seen that situation with a couple people that quit where I work. The hiring managers and the boss was upset that they left, or actually when they left but they badmouth the s*** out of them.

It is one thing for them to badmouth them within the company and another to call the new employer to tattle on the person they just hired. As a hiring manager, I’ve never gotten a call from someone’s ex-supervisor about anything. Perhaps it happens, but I doubt that it is common.

Her advice on "be awesome at your job". I'd say "do tasks at work that reflect well on your resume. Think about your work tasks as bullet points. If it looks good on the resume and you think it'll reflect well (gotta have a good enough boss he won't stab you in the back), but it can help.
