I work in California as a substitute teacher. Despite hearing the claim "there's a teacher shortage" a lot, my experience is that the schools (where I live) don't give substitute teachers enough shifts to earn a decent living, so a lot of qualified persons working as substitutes, who want to be full-time teachers, are having to take up other careers, and the teaching profession is losing a lot of good candidates. I have two bachelors degrees and a doctorate, but find that in order to get a credential that allows me to hold a 5 day a week teaching job, California will require me to take two full years more of college. I really don't need another college degree, what I need is a full-time job. Are there any shorter paths to becoming a credentialed 5 day a week teacher in California? Have you thought of creating any 3-6 mo. training programs for professionals who already have degrees, but would now like to teach full time? I was homeless for the past year because I'm not getting enough teacher shifts. I recently found a house, but rent is expensive in California and I'm very worried that I may end up homeless again if I can't get enough shifts or a part-time job, or a full-time job doing something other than teaching. I could be a great teacher if the UCal or CSU system would actually allow that to happen. Do you have any answers? Thanks, Beth = [e-mail]

Having worked for and within a public school district in Arizona for a few years as a 'related service' provider for ESS students, I would caution anybody to become a teacher. Low pay, overfilled classes, stingy districts, low funding, sue-happy parents and no way to discipline kids of parents who demand teachers make up for what parents missed during the first forming years of their children ... none of that is worth the effort and money needed to become a teacher.
