As a manager, I never considered any of these things in an interview. I've been in interviews other people conducted where they gave a perfect interview by the book, but could do jack once given the job. I've interviewed several people informally, and if I held every posture they held as well as how accurate and 'to a 't' every answer was, I would have rejected a LOT of fine candidates. Its time to just get back to no BS. If the job requires interaction with customers, yes, you want a certain higher level of presentability. But if the person is working internally you only want someone that can work with the team and be a good person and can do their work. Placing undue stress on people during interviews when it is unneeded is disqualifying a LOT of good candidates. What you get are a bunch of interviewees that are 'studying to the test'. I want people to speak their true feelings in an interview and not be judged. Sure there are basics to be followed, but lets stop with this rehearsed nonsense. Until then, yes let's follow all this advice...but its not a SOLUTION to to ROOT CAUSE of the problem. Unnecessary standards.

Great advice! What if I am sitting at a table across from the interviewers. Where do I put my hands? Thank you. I am 63 years old and have all the qualifications for the jobs I have applied for and interviewed for. Friday will be my ninth interview...all the others emailed to say they found another candidate to fill the job(s). I'm either doing something wrong, saying more than enough, or using my hands too much, maybe they are hiring in-house and are required to interview me, or I'm too old and they are quietly practicing ageism, or something else. So, any help will benefit me, I'm sure. I really appreciate any help you can provide. ~Leslie

Hi, in a recent interview for a general manager, the company president received me into the interview room and shown 10 chairs lined-up at the wall, asked me to pick-up one chair out of them... the chairs of different sizes, one is gray and tall without hand rests... he said this is not so comfortable.... asked me to choose any one chair... I went ahead picking the one with good height as I prefer the height one usually... not sure what is the logic behind this... could you through some light on this?
