Description:
Would you have ever thought a founder of Bonaire’s Marine Park would have been in a concentration camp? Come learn about the incredible story of how a resistance fighter from World War II, Carel Steensma, became a founder of the Bonaire Marine Park and immortalized in the naming of the Carel’s Vision Dive site. We will also take you to this remote dive site, on our boat Odyssey, to witness amazing coral structures, and lots of fish as well as other reef creatures. In fact, in this episode we do a lot of reef identification to prepare you for your next dive trip. This episode is packed with history, adventure, and lots of macro and wide-angle video (including squid mating) of this amazing site. Pull up your dive bag and a big bowl of popcorn and let us take you away on this amazing adventure.

This is my favorite video thus far because of the crows next views from Odyssey revealing the gorgeous seas and cliffs, the inspiring and heartwarming narrative of a man who made Bonaire the eco paradise it is, despite all adversity, and the macro shots of the lovely sea creatures. Did I forget to mention the squid? This video rocks!

That yellow frogfish is amazing. So is that rare sort of parrotfish. And many others. Great production, it's pure pleasure to watch.

No those parrotfish are not rare. What is interesting about parrotfish is most change colors and patterns as they mature making it challenging to identify them so I like to identify them to help viewers recognize them.

@@ADiversLife yeah, after I left this comment yesterday, I realized (when google'ing) that it could be a stoplight parrotfish on it's initial phase. Still- this color/sex change is very unique to me. Thanks!

Hey Rich and Doreen: Beautiful boat. Elisabeth and I first NW dive since Bonaire. 3 ft vis. But the water was cold. Nice. Beautiful video, great background story. Can't wait to get back to the beautiful warm waters.

ouch! I learned to dive in New England so I am familiar with those conditions. Not a lot of fun. I recall my first dive on the L8 submarine in Rhode Island and not knowing I was on the wreck until my head hit the Conning tower at about 100 feet in 43 degree water. burr.

Fantastic researched and narrated story on Carel Steensma. So much effort into each and every video you two put out. Also applies to the continuously running fish id ourse that is included just for free! The dive spot looks fabulous. Only problem with rounding Bopec point is when you want to drive back and the wind increased while the current reversed. Makes for very steep and short waves. Can be quite exiting, to say the least.
@ADiversLife
@ADiversLife Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes. The world cat seems to take it much easier than our previous monohull but we did not have a huge wind. We were running easy at 23 mph around the point and BOPEC. Will see when we get done real wind.

Great video Rich. Incredible story about Carel. I just returned from Bonaire on Saturday. This was my 4th trip there. The visibility was not as good as the past and also a lot more current than before. Still the best diving!

Thank you Scott! Yes. We had a wind reversal which hits west coast diving. We have also had lots of wind which silts up the water delaying filming. We were happy to finally get this one out which we loved making. The waters are clearing again however.

Hi Rich & Doreen, great video as always. Looking forward to our trip back to Bonaire at the end of February. Is Carel's Vision site diveable from shore or only by boat?
@ADiversLife
@ADiversLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, you can get to Carel’s Vision from shore but it is not easy. You have to go down hill through brush to get there. It involves you taking the dirt road around BOPEC.

WOW! I love of your content especially how you identify species. It is on my bucket list to dive and see some of these species with my own eyes. My family and I will be visiting Bonaire Dec 28th on a Christmas Cruise. Any tips? Rich, I doubt you remember me, we ever so briefly worked together right before your retirement from the corporate world. As a handicapped individual I am passionate about inclusivity, we were in a week long workshop focused on a11y. No worries is you don't recall me, it has been a few years. If you have any tips how a handicapped person can experience the first time joys of Bonaire please do share. again, great content keep it coming. It fills my heart with joy to enjoy diving through your lens!

Hi Georgette, the Divi resort and Captain Don’s Resort often host wounded warriors and eels on wheels dive trips. They have had staff trained to work with people with disabilities. The extent I d not know but I would suggest contacting them. Beyond that, Bonaire is not the most handicapped friendly island which I experienced coming back with a knee injury. I would suggest giving the two resorts a call. I hope that helps.
@geodezinr
@geodezinr Жыл бұрын
@@ADiversLife Thanks Rich! I will look into those resorts/programs. Hope the knee is well on the mend. I did find the water taxi's to Klien Bonaire which look accessible enough for me. Excited to learn to snorkel before our trip. Maybe on a future trip we will dive into the deep with scuba. Let me know if ya have any lunch spots that are local favs near the cruise terminal. Best wishes!
