Damn commendable effort by Mahindra for the 700 series. I happened to see one on display at a local shopping mall and upon approaching thought that the bonnet was unlatched. Closer inspection revealed massive shut lines all about the vehicle; nice interior but those piano black surfaces were already heavily scratched/blemished and dumbfounded as to the certain high level of luxuries (Merc-like front driver seat controls, all manual for passenger side, Tesla like pop out door handles but halogen rear taillights). An interesting mix, and well priced.

As someone in the US (Miami), it's always interesting to see the somewhat off the beaten track options available in Oz. In a former life, I was a subcontractor to vehicle OEM's (selling enclosed truck space for film shoots, events and prototype transport) and chased Mahindra USA, for a short while. Their only focus stateside is farm equipment (they have brought in their version of the Jeep Wrangler but, short of some adventurous buyers, have never seen one in the wild.) Given Oz's relative proximity to Asia, as a whole, it stands to reason that consumers would be less judgmental when it comes to vehicles from the likes of India and China / Korea to a lesser extent. I spent 20 (formative) years in Singapore, so don't hold the same prejudices (My brother lives in Brisbane). Always a pleasure to run into your reviews, Paul. Thank you for the content, kind sir.
@yissibiiyte

I don't think Australia's proximity to Asia has anything to do with their acceptance of less famous brands. It's just that Americans are too stubborn and brand loyal to even consider a brand that hasn't been in America for at least 30 years.

Hey Paul! Love the work you do! Been following you for quite a while now. I use this exact car here in India. Seems like you have missed enabling this feature “Smart Pilot Assist” for testing the autonomous driving! That isn’t the same as lane keep assist which veers too close to the lane markings for comfort. The former keeps the car dead center and I use it here in Indian condition quite extensively! Do try that out. 18:09

I test drove this car today. Frankly, I couldn't believe how great it was. Solid and refined at the same time. A pleasure to sit in and drive. The suspension is so good I didn't notice I'd gone over a kerb. And it's a 7 seater! If only there was more leg room in front as I'm 6ft2. For those 6ft and less, I have not found any better Petrol version, and I've test driven lots. Since it's built to withstand Indian roads, it should be very reliable. That I don't see more on the road in Australia tells me it's got to be a well kept secret..

The reason why Paul, you're not happy with a few functions and quality because there's still not much competition in India for Mahindra. Foreign cars have extremely high tariff. Need to lower the tariffs further. Competition will make this and other Indian brands world class. Or else China will always be ahead of us.

Well the truth is there is a fair amount of competition in Indian market. While it's true that foreign cars face elevated tariffs, this mainly applies to CBU imports. In reality, numerous automakers such as Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen group, Honda, and others have a significant presence in the market and wield substantial influence with their diverse product offerings. Moreover, a substantial amount of their vehicles are manufactured locally in India due to which they are priced similar to their Indian competitors.

Very good package by the looks of it, but I would gladly swap the third row of seats for parking sensors. Given its array of tech, and intended customer profile, this seems a strange omission.

Maybe they will improve the automatic aesthetics like assist and what not but it feels like the future is wiping away the age old Aesthetics of Real Manual Driving with full concentration on the road without any assistance, any cameras, any sensors.

I don't understand why you find it surprising that both the Scorpio-N and XUV700 drive so well? Is it because of your prejudice towards Indian brands? What is more surprising to me is your prejudice coupled with the fact that Australia has no known home grown auto car brands to start with. It will be good if you learn to appreciate without prejudice.

It’s surprising because the last XUV I drove handled terribly. So it’s great to hear Mahindra did ride and handling tunes in Australia instead of taking the base Indian tune. The Koreans have been doing the same for a while.

BRILLIANT review ! The Mahindra XUV700 & the Scorpio N is now SIMPLY & FACTUALLY by a MILLION miles class leading in ALL categories: 1) Design & finishes, inside & out! 2) Performance 3) Tech 4) Safety slightly off..🤔 5) Performance 6) Off & on road capability 7) ALL THAT at AMAZING price .. & therefore by FAR SIMPLY the BEST VALUE you can find in the world today... (GWM & HAVAL will table a lityle debate, but NO one else stand a chance 😉😁!) Just brilliant cars 👍👌✨

Mahindra have always built cars for hard going. To succeed in India is testimony enough. However, in Australia, they are up against the dealer network, who will not accept a reduction in profits. Hard luck Mahindra!

Since I have never seen this vehicle or I will probably never see it. To me it looks like a mishmash of design. Front and side: Renault Koleos Back: 2023 BMW X5 Dashboard: Hyundai Ioniq Seat controllers: old Mercedes models Third row seats: bad copy of a Kia Sorento/Hyundai SantaFe I also wonder how safe it is especially if you have to put all your family in it.

It is GNCAP tested and awarded 5 star. But those should get converted to 0 stars when it comes to Australian NCAP! GNCAP ratings are paid and Indian car manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra take it for granted.
