We've had ours for two weeks, and already covered 3500kms. Absolutely love it. I believe it is better value than any European car that might be considered comparable, and better quality, too. Would recommend it to anyone.

I took one for a test drive at Honda Rockdale Sydney, very ,very classy car the car oozes class , definitely wouldn’t put it in Corolla class more ,BMW but would be a lot more reliable than BMW , Sort of car you could buy and keep for 20 years without to munch trouble .

Excellent review. A bit unfortunate that Honda calls the transmission an eCVT. It not only isn’t a CVT, it isn’t even a gearbox. There is no gearbox at all. It’s either driven directly by an electric motor or, at higher speeds, a direct drive to the petrol engine via a clutch. As you noted, it’s a very different hybrid drive and very different to the Toyota hybrid drive. $55k might seem like a lot for a Civic until you actually start to see what you’re getting for the money.

Thanks Paul love your reviews! Really keen to buy one but you mention that there are other options? I thought that the only other was the wheezy Corolla or have I missed something ? I would have liked to have bought an EV sedan but they seem too far away and much more expensive. Thoughts? Cheers!

$55k might seem like a lot for a Civic until you actually start to see what you’re getting for the money. And what exactly is that? A G25 Astina is subjectively significantly more premium inside and more feature rich. The differences in powertrain between a G25 Astina and any either Civic variants does not warrant the significant price difference.
@Crosshead1
@Crosshead1 Жыл бұрын
@@jay-uo2bi I currently own a BN series Mazda3 SP25 Astina (2017) and would have normally just moved to a BP Astina, but am now looking for something equivalent but more economical. I love the classy interior of the BP series Astina but it actually has less performance and higher fuel consumption than my BN series. My driving is mostly short range urban and I can’t find a BEV that fills my needs and desires. And I hate SUVs. No discussion. I just categorically hate them. As it stands, the Civic e.HEV comes closest to fitting the bill. And it’s not 1990 anymore. I don’t actually think $55k is too much for the Civic e.HEV if it fills my needs and desires.

Just to confirm to everyone who hates CVT gearboxes including me that the hybrid version does not have a CVT gearbox with a belt! It's an E -CVT. The electric motor drives the car most of time then a clutch can engage at high speeds to drive directly through a one speed direct drive gearbox. This is the reason these will sell like hot cakes including the ZRV and CRV which will use same chassis and drivetrain.

Great review Paul. I purchased one in pearlescent white here in Melbourne and have been living with it for about 3.5 weeks now. It will just be ticking over 600km before I need to refill the 40L tank!! I am sure I could extract a lot more than 600km if I took it for longer trips on the highways. The official marketing statement is that the car only supports wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto. Well.....I have been digging around and there is a diagnostic menu that you can access to enable wireless Android Auto.. I have enabled this feature and I am now using wireless Android Auto which means the USB data port is free for me to plug in a USB Stick with music and video files (which the user manual lists supported files - MP4, MKV, AVI, ASF/WMV). Of course, whilst in a parked or stopped position, the video will play. When the car is in motion, the video stops but the audio continues. It is illegal for a driver to watch movies while the car is in motion here in Australia - not sure in other countries! Other things I can tell you and your viewers is that the car can comfortably fit a standard golf bag with all clubs (120cm in length) lengthways and a push buggy (you can also fit a MGI Navigator Remote buggy as well but the wheels need to be inverted). The trick to fitting in the golf bag is to load the bag with the head of the clubs first into the left side of the boot (in the indentation area) and swivel the rest of the golf bag in.. The base of the golf bag would barely touch the bose sub woofer on the right side. I have also used the Honda Connect system which as you said connects your phone to the car to enable pre-heat/cooling function. You can also remotely flash the headlights if you need to find your car in a busy car park and find where your car is on a map. There is also geo-fencing and speed limit alerts that you can set. The other useful feature is the trip log function that records your drive. You get to see a map trail of your drive, start / end time of the drive, total travel time and the distance covered. So if you lent your car to a someone, you can track where the car has been and whether the driver has been speeding!! I am still learning about the "tech" in the car and I am loving the punchy performance of the electric motor in "Sport" mode. And so far your review is pretty much spot on.. Hope to watch the next one on the Type R!!

The car was so surprisingly impressive to drive and the quality of the car is really impressive. So I’ve put in an order for one! The only negative (which I was prepared for considering Toyota hybrids have a waitlist of over a year at the moment) is the 9 month wait. But will definitely be worth it and I’m in no rush. My wife's car is a 2011 Accord Euro with now 300k in it. Manual by the way and it has been faultless . I love the way it drives. To me you pay for what you get and the new Civic Hybrid is in the radar for a replacement to a car we still love and enjoy driving. Haven't seen a bad review on the latest model and reckon it could be a worthy replacement for the under rated euro.

As an American with virtually zero choice in hatchbacks (much less hatchbacks with great fuel efficiency, nice handling, and styling that doesn't make me cringe) I am amazed to learn we're going to be getting this in the states. Went to the Carshow this year and sat in every Honda and Toyota i could. Civic vs Corolla : Civic wins on just about everything, especially interior quality, and internal space. The Civic is just so much roomier. The Corolla feels cramped. Civic feels premium. Civic vs Accord : It's what you would expect but i guess they've decreased the gap between the Civic and Accord with the 2023 models a bit. Accord is a little roomier, a little bit more interior quality, i cant get around that gaping mouth grill on the Accord though, but the side profile feels very Mercedes'y. Accord vs Camry : Not too far but the Camry does feel the slightly nicer car in the very top trim vs Accord top trim. Just a bit more plush on the materials. I would go for the Camry on this one.

I wish you car reviewers would do your homework before spouting guff. There isn't a CVT on this car despite what Honda call it. Either the drive electric motor is driving the wheels or the engine is driving the wheels or both at the same time. There is no transmission varying any sort of gear ratio. A superbly clever system.

It is certainly a sharp and smart looking car now the Civic, would consider one if it was as expensive as some vehicles the next class up or more luxury brands, think they have priced it a bit too high for it still to be A Civic.. For 55k we should have been sold the Canadian spec Si. This car should be 47k like the 1.5T, which should have been around 40k. The sedan option across the range would have been brilliant too. With the Type R coming out at 73k, I really doubt we'll see many on the road. If Honda wanted to go the "premium" path in Australia they could have at least brought over some of their USDM and JDM offerings. The HRV at the price it is without AWD and only 4 seats is actually laughable as well, and I'm someone who loves Honda.

Great review Paul. Banking lane test is interesting. Yeah see lots of comments that civic is expensive. YESS. it is , and I like it. people who find it pricey pls stick to your mazda 3 and toyotas. driving with 5k miles on it and its been great. I feel its proly about 3-4K over priced but would happily pay the premium to have some exclusivity. still rides great. for all i30N fans pls go for it. Honda definitely cheaped out on few bits- No rear LEDs, no Tyre pressure sensors. No parking sensors for petrol variants. no lumbar support, no HUD.. dont mind the screen size ,size is decent to glance maps. cheaped out on digital instrument panel on petrol versions. Despite the flaws its a good car. FYI in NZ , mazda 3 petrol 2.0 skyactive X - takami (53K) , i30N fastback manual (63+1.8k) Dual clutch (70+1.8k) Honda Civic 1.5T (47K) so yeah price is not terrible .

Mazda 3 is very claustrophobic. Mazda has soft touch dash and I like HUD in Mazda. Test drove new and used mazda 3 (a year old) felt mazda ages really fast compared to civic win regards to driving comfort. Civic drives like a bigger car and it is!. Mazda 3 rear seat is utter disappointment. Anyone taller than 180 cm will not fit well. CVT is actually not a deal breaker in civic. Sports mode is very peppy and I drive on hilly roads a lot. People just want cheap materials and a cheaper car but also want quality. Post Covid its not cheap. I feel civic hybrid is a great car. If u want to pay premium believe me u won’t be disappointed. Great review as usual. I've always been wondering if there's any further explanation - other than production budget/price-wise - of why Japanese car manufacturers tend to keep using semi/partial LED tail lights on their products? Just like Paul said, it is very disappointing.
@HerrSpatz
@HerrSpatz Жыл бұрын
My guess is that LED’s don’t last nearly as long as they should when constantly changing brightness/ turning on & off. Replacing LED bulbs is much more costly than $2 incandescents. Environmentally it is also much easier to recycle the metal & glass than LEDs. Plus in a vehicle consumption of power of incandescents vs leds is negligible.
@jay-uo2bi
@jay-uo2bi Жыл бұрын
Ease and cost of maintenance. Bulbs are cheap, standardized and dead easy to change. On many cars with LEDs, if they fail you have to replace the entire assembly, and even if the manufacturer made the more LEDs replaceable, it would still be a somewhat expensive and specific part that would add complexity in part sourcing. I much prefer LEDs but for brands like Toyota/Hyundai etc it's understandable and the most sensible thing. It's not cheaping out, it's really in the interest of the consumer tbh.

Hi Paul, how did you keep it on the 100% revs without fake gear changing while doing 0-100? Did you launch it by holding the break and gas at the same time and then take the foot of the break, or did it activate just because you've turned off the traction control? Would appreciate a response coz I'm not sure how to launch mine like this, thanks!

Paul incorrectly stated that this car has a CVT, it does not. It has a fixed drive gear (1 speed gearbox). The engine is mechanically connected to the gearbox only at higher speeds and light throttle, other times a clutch seperates them. During the acceleration test the engine goes to max power to drive the generator that then powers the electric motor to drive the wheels.

Hopefully, it will keep the 181 bhp hybrid drivetrain on this model, not the 155 bhp (and noisy!) hybrid drivetrain used on last Honda Insight model.

Test drive showed it has above average driver engagement, very responsive with good steering feel. And BOSE sound system is excellent, as is sunroof. Boot space is decent. However there are some negatives. The Hill Holder requires more attention than my current vehicle, which is a set-and-forget process. No power tailgate, or remote levers for lowering rear seats. Foot under-front seat room was minimal and lowering back seat armrest left a gap into boot. Incandescent globes in rear lights is disappointing, as is no active turn signals. Lack of spare wheel is a major downside. Level of tyre roar is an issue on Aus coarse chip surfaces - this isn't Europe. Finally I think it is around $3K overpriced. Also a broader range of body colours would be nice.

Great review as always Paul. The issue is the asking price for a Hybrid, just like the new HR-V, not sure how they justify so much more for Hybrid. The HR-V Hybrid is $11,000 more than the petrol, it will take an average driver 20 years to break even with petrol savings going to the hybrid over the standard petrol HR-V. Honda vehicles are VERY overpriced.

The price is just insane. It's a nice car of course but there's no way these are worth 47/54k. At 43k, I think a Mazda 3 G25 Astina is a nicer car. Cerato GT at 39k I also think would be a nicer drive. They also need to bring back the Jazz, although at it the price Honda Aus would sell it for you may be better off getting the new Fabia.

@@Crosshead1 Have you test driven the current gen Mazda3? I think you’ll be impressed by how quiet it is and how premium everything feels. The Civic is a fine car but at $55k tell ‘em they’re dreamin - also not to mention when Americans compare the two cars at equal pricing spec, they still tend to say the Mazda feels more premium so that’s saying something. With $50k to spend on a car though I’d recommend the Skoda Octavia 140TSI Limited Ed. Superb levels of equipment, great big boot with great acceleration + 7yr warranty.
