I found that Variety review infuriating because the whole point was that he said Carey Mulligan wasn't attractive enough for men to rape. As if only attractive women are raped and, furthermore, only attractive women should be believed. Absolutely f-ing infuriating. And the apology did not even come close to addressing this problem.

I like this series. But in all truthfulness, I rarely watch one fully through. They usually babble on so much I’m surprised by the awkwardness, seeing as they’re actually professional speakers. But not tonight! Zendaya is such a wise old soul for being so young, speaks with such a beautiful rhythm, is confident in her voice and message. And Carey Mulligan is so eloquent in her story telling, can speak so powerfully with such a calm voice. This was a great pairing and they did very well in supporting each other throughout the conversation!

I'd like to point out that the editing that has been done to the dialogue plays a heavy hand in whether or not we see the "babbling". This video is clearly edited to make it as condensed as possible where as the Actors on Actors in person is going for a more raw, unedited feeling. Not to take anything away from either women but it's a similar conversation to how reality tv stars can be edited to look more conniving or more confident by which clips they choose.

It's interesting how Variety was the one to say that Carey didn't look the part [she's early to mid 30s and Cassie the character is 30, (not a big leap IMO in an industry where 30- somethings or 20- somethings play teens)] And they're the ones who in this video probably had that question put in to show their subscribers/readers/audience "look, it's all good now. We made a brief apology" What are women and girls supposed to look like to attract rapists? Because the last time I checked they'll go for toddlers, adolescents, teens, young women, older women- any ethnicity, any size, conventionally pretty or not. Hollywood bends over backwards to try to "prove" that it is pro-change and pro- equality for women, however publications such as Variety STILL hold women to ridiculous standards which we don't hold our male counterparts, or in this case ACTORS, to. They are free to age normally. God forbid a woman above 25 should show any signs of aging And then if they do get some work done, they still get ridiculed about it. Let people be their authentic selves.

Promising Young woman had me so totally invested in Cassie's journey and after the credit rolls I literally had to lay in bed and think things out. Zendaya really is a force of nature. She is a woman of many talents. She can sing, she can act, dance and such a fashion icon as well. I liked how she called out a magazine who edited her in a photo shoot making her less curvy and more tanned whereas she was happy expressing her body and her image. She is such a beautiful woman and in the first spiderman movie she doesn't even wear make up she looks even more beautiful and just natural. She was my first choice for Ariel in the Little Mermaid. And Carey Mulligan, I first saw her in Doctor Who in that terrifying weeping angel episode and what an amazing leading lady presence she was. In An Education she reminded me of old classic Hollywood actresses and very Audrey Hepburn like. Through her amazing face acting she can say many things. Loved her performance in The Great Gatsby as well, she looked absolutely beautiful like she fit the time period the film was set in. She looks like she can be in any time period in film and fit in but also stand out with her performance. In Suffragette, she really moved me and was instantly mesmerising. I can't wait to see her in Promising Young Woman, its such a change in character for her and be great to see her in a different role compared to her previous work. That critic that called Mulligan as not attractive must be ashamed of themself as Mulligan shows she is a different kind of woman who doesn't rely on her looks to be sexy on screen. I hope these actresses get nominated and maybe win the Oscar for these roles. Either one of them to win for me as both actresses are incredibly talented and deserve an Oscar in the future.

Not trying to be "part of the problem" but... since when was Carey Mulligan unattractive? She's so goddamn pretty even in Promising Young Woman. Like, my goodness, the fucking nurse outfit
@monicamerle14173 жыл бұрын
She is not unattractive, but Margot Robbie is the most beautiful actress in the world. And she is a producer of the film and the critic insinuated that Robbie would have been better choice. I agree. Mulligan is an actress cold and distant, she's very great in this movie, but her stuff is the historical period movies.
@georgeehret34803 жыл бұрын
@@monicamerle1417 hot take I think Carey Mulligan is prettier than Margot Robbie Regardless of that, going from one type of performance to something not in their wheelhouse doesn’t make that performance lesser. Like yeah not every actor is as versatile as Daniel Day-Lewis, but Willem Dafoe was amazing in The Florida Project and that was WAY different than anything else he’s ever done. Carey Mulligan doing this after doing those historical dramas actually makes her performance more impressive as a result. And it’s not like she’s only done historical dramas, Shame is a contemporary movie and she’s excellent in that. Would Margot Robbie have been good in the movie? Yeah, but Carey gave her best performance to date and the best performance of 2020 as a whole. And the review sorta insinuated that she wasn’t attractive enough to be sexually assaulted, which is problematic for obvious reasons.
@monicamerle14173 жыл бұрын
@@georgeehret3480 I read the review on Variety and did not get that feeling, I understood that for the critic because Margot was a producer probably she'd been interested at some point in the role and then dropped it. I find Mulligan repetitive in her roles like Keira Knightley. She's pretty good in this movie considering her previous boring monotone roles. I mean I love The Great Gatsby because of Leo and the director but Mulligan zero chemistry with Leo. Margot is beautiful and talented too and highly underrated, don't you think that maybe because she's the typical bombshell she doesn't get the recognition she deserves? Have you seen I, Tonya? The academy doesn't take her seriously because she's too pretty and ergo not award deserving. Margot could argue the exact opposite that Mulligan did to that critic 🙄
@georgeehret34803 жыл бұрын
@@monicamerle1417 you cannot make the argument that the Academy doesn’t take Margot Robbie seriously when you look at the fact that she was nominated TWICE. Granted, she hasn’t won (yet), but they are aware of her and her talents. Carey’s only been nominated once, for An Education, which I implore you to watch for her performance alone. Way better performance than Sandra Bullock who won that year. And Margot probably didn’t take the role because she had other projects to work on. Again, I don’t doubt she would’ve done a good job, but Carey owned that performance and honestly should run away with that Oscar and the other major awards. It’s a better Lead Actress performance than just about every Lead Actress performance of the last decade, and I’d vote for her over most of the previous winners easy. And she absolutely can win the Oscar this year, fingers crossed that she does. Just cause Margot Robbie did Harley Quinn really well it doesn’t mean she’d play this role as good as anyone else
@monicamerle14173 жыл бұрын
@@georgeehret3480 you said it "nominated" not won. A role like Harley would never be recognized by awards members, she was great in playing Elizabeth I, Tonya Harding, even in a small part in Once upon a time in Hollywood. It's good Mulligan decided to do something different for a change but don't you go to Rotten Tomatoes and actually read a few reviews of Promising Young Woman. Several other critics of big papers were much critical of this movie than the guy from Variety. I read some negative reviews in where they made criticism I don't actually agree. I get you're a fan but I guess Mulligan only read the Variety review because this interview comes from their site. She should read other ones...
