Coilovers, wider wheels with proper tires, new brakes and then maybe some power increases. I'd have put a proper seat and steering wheel in before a power mod, especially nitrous..

End of the day they learned why Alfisti are so passionate about the cars despite their shortcomings, and got to take something other than a rental around the ring - that's a pretty good adventure in my books, and while it might not be the most conventional approach to modification a 916 GTV isn't a conventional approach to casual track work. Kudos for educating us on a bit of oft forgotten history.

Question the reliability of the car despite the fact first thing you did was add NOS. I have this car, it’s not exactly a Merc from the ‘80’s but when serviced properly, it’s reliable. The engine is great as are most other systems. The biggest issue is the suspension which is made for grip but its complexity means it’s not smooth or will last for decades. I feel this series does a disservice to this car which is a bit of an unsung future classic.

I know that everyone have different opinions on how the car should be tuned and modified. But you never EVER should race with worn out tyres, summer or all seasons on a track, especially in the Nürburgring. It's about safety, not about the fastest lap.

Lol my Alfa is 25 years old and it's solid, never let me down, funny how people just assume they're unreliable. I'd have taken a 147 with the 2.0 litre T Spark engine for its superior handling. I've never understood the hype around the nurnbergring, looks a right shithole lol.

I really can't see why anyone would hate so much on this man and on this series. The concept behind the video is interesting, the way the content is delivered is clear and overall it is very entertaining to watch. You may say he didn't choose the right car or that he didn't spend his money in the best way possible, but still it was his personal way of doing it and he had fun, which is the most important aspect of driving a car. Also he prioritized what he think is best for that car and for what he wanted to achieve.

What a credit to the channel you are for doing this series...top man! As a former GTV 3.0 V6 24v owner, this video was absolutely perfect in its descriptions and analysis. A truly classic car with fundamental faults that you will forget once you turn the key. Best V6 engine ever made.

Silly mods really. Even on a budget a lot more could have been done. Forget more power as it already had 230 which is plenty enough for the chassis. Uprated Shocks and anti roll bars, an LSD and things would have been a lot safer and faster for less money. Having said that the weather was shit so it would have taken a complete hero to get round there in a good time without ending up in the barrier.

The car went on a dyno in episode 2 before it had the NOS fitted. It's 20 years old and has at least a cold air intake and a free flow exhaust - who knows what's been done to it before this series?

I like the presenter, but this series is awful. the car is butchered and downright more dangerous than before. tires, brakes, general condition, suspension, roll cage and then go further.This is a quality channel, this series not so much.
@brianantnssn5177
@brianantnssn5177 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Harrold that's not a cage, it's a half cage/roll bar. Also stripping the wing for more aero on a track that needs every bit of it, with all the high speed sections, raises a few eyebrows. Also nitrous to add hp instead of a turbo or supercharger is just wanting to be different instead of doing it the right way. Butchered the car completely.
@brianantnssn5177
@brianantnssn5177 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Harrold no downforce needed on a fwd car? The engine is already in the front, adding downforce on the rear axle helps the weight distribution. Maybe he wouldn't have almost binned it by spinning out with some decent downforce.
@flanners41
@flanners41 6 жыл бұрын
A rear spoiler on a front-driver race car will help with braking, cornering, and the reduction of lift. Under heavy braking, the rear of the car may want to come around, as the load forces are transitioned heavily to the nose. A rear spoiler can help mitigate some of that and keep the rear contact patches more firmly planted. Apparently.

I have a Gtv V6 and I don't share the presenter's continual neurosis about unreliability, perhaps for £3K he bought a dog of one? My feelings are for what he used it for he should have purchased a decent one which is £6k and attempted the Ring in that rather than 'wasting' money on the 'mods' he chose which appeared to make naff all difference.

The problem is mostly front wheel drive on a wet surface. While rear wheel drive seems worse, with rear wheel drive you still have some control over the rear with your right foot. When a front wheel drive loses grip at the rear, however, you are basically a passenger with nothing to do but hope the front wheels pull you out... except they won't when you are at the grip limit already. Personally I prefer rear wheel over front wheel on a wet surface any time of the day.

i think that the presenter is trying to make the alfa as similar as possible to the one back in the 1930,s which would mean the absence of the tire, suspension and brake upgrades because the old alfa would have poor tires, brakes and suspension. hes trying to experience what the racing driver guy experienced back in the day.
@OrangeCrusader

But then why 'upgrade' that stuff at all, then? If the idea is to half-recreate a historic lap, adding modern mods (lol, nos) to it kinda flies off in the opposite direction of 'back in the day experience' in any way, IMO.

Ah the Alfa 'race car' series comments...this should be fun Take a nice car, make it useless on the track and undriveable on the street. Good work. Good to see the NOS put to good use too..... If you want to do a fast lap around any track you should upgrade the suspension and brakes more -Bigger anti roll bars -Polyurathane bushes -Coil over suspension -lightweight and wide wheels (with decent rubber) -bigger disc rotors, bigger calipers and some hi temp fluid Oh and strip the interior and boot. Wasn't it Colin Chapman who said "add lightness?" Seemed to work for the cars sporting his company logo. Or you can do down the Fast and Furious route and add NOS...... I know which one I'd trust to make a quick car...

Despite some of the reservations in the comments I enjoyed it because I have just bought a very similar car, same colour, same age and it's been great to see the love for the car the guy has developed and that he's realised he's butchered it! I think it is or was for sale so maybe one of the complainers here could return it to it's former glory :)

Thanks. Sold and returned to standard a while ago now. I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I did.

Dont really understand why it is unreliable. Was it badly mantained? You keep on about quircks because its an Alfa, but these 916 models all derived from the 155 and are good cars without electronic problems and especially the V6 is quite bullitproof. From itself the 24v have the 330mm brembo kit and they brake really well. No fading with fresh fluid. I like the Nuvolari touch to it. Legendary story. When will you have both legs in plaster and go ride a motobike? ;)

Well shot, nicely edited, well presented, but... I have to agree with the others, the content's just not there. I absolutely appreciate you for sticking with it (seeing as it's a relatively short series after all), but you do need to get back to the drawing board for the next project.

I really like this series. The mods were quite silly though. PLEASE don't do anything stupid with that GTV (and if you do please send the rims over lol). And put the bloody spoiler on!!

I would be great to compare a Mitsubishi FTO Mivec to this Alfa as they have allot in common both 2 door coupes both are front engined both have v6 engines although the fto is only 2L and not a 3L it's slightly down on power at 200 bhp vs 220 but the performance stats 0 to 60 are very similar

10:48 you say there are not a lot of modified ones? I know for 5 of them from my head right now (alfaowners forum) i had mine specially modified for track use, no understeer on mine, moved front tyres more forward, stiffer rear arb, lsd, lightened front end, balanced tuned engine to cca 270bhp and so on... I like the show but didnt liked the mods.
