The Pontiac Tojan is America's forgotten supercar and at 800hp and over 200 mph it really should have a more recognition. Alec goy takes one of these rare cars for a drive.

I was about to call bullsh*t on this car, but i googled it and read up on the history of it. It was a legit car that you had to order through a Pontiac dealer. I had never heard about it or seen one of these before today and i am a car guy who lives in the States and has owned Pontiacs before. I doubt this was advertised much if at all when it was available for purchase.
@atastefortheroad4475

You're correct. They never advertised the car and it was only offered through certain dealers. It's a real slice of 80s bravado - and the limitations of the platform/materials of the time. Great to see Carfection (and Alex) focusing on these unique automotive wonders.

It was not marketed by GM nor Pontiac. It was a third-party company (Knudsen) that used F-body as the basis. (Camaro version is called Carallo) I saw Tojan in person at Chicago auto show in the 80s. They even had a single leaflet brochure for this which I may even have.... The Tojan was displayed NOT in the Pontiac stand, but in one of those smaller areas in the corner that has aftermarket tuner cars and some obscure smaller makers. It's funny some people still remember this little project car...😁

My dad and my cousin had 350 Chevys built in 1980 to almost the same specs, but with a single large turbo. Back then everyone was so worried about detonation, you would use 7:1 flat top pistons. Also the cams were ground without overlap and had very high lift for the time. They were worried about blowback during high boost, which in our daily driver was 14 psi.

The Tojan was a GM product & it was sold in Pontiac dealerships. Very few went to the dealerships because over 113 were sold to private car collectors. I have one that was owned by Knudsen before he sold it to an elder gentleman who had to have one in his collection. I spoke with Mr Knudsen about the car & he had many fun stories about the Tojan. It was the car used in the movie Jay Leno was in called Collision Course & it was used in Miami Vice & Falcon Crest. Several people purchased the Tojan from dealerships & wrecked them before they got it home. So if anyone says it is a kit car you can tell them no it's not.

Never heard of this, and as a kid in the 1980s this was exactly the kind of car I would have looked for in the pages. But it sounds like this wasn't a Pontiac. Just a third party aftermarket kit builder, which there were oodles of. And since F body vars were abundant, with RWD platforms and roomy engine bays, they were a popular foundation for such projects.

Never knew about this car. But love it. What a sleeper. People would think you have some kind of fluffed up Firebird with about 200 HP with a smog choked motor and some cute badges stuck on it. Can you imagine 800hp then from the factory. And it started at only about $22K and with all the options $55k. A good chunk of change in 1986 - 1991 but you got a AM-FM cassette player with a equalizer for all that. 800hp from a 305ci V-8 was impressive but at a time everything else was running smog choked 150hp boat anchors.

The company Knudsen made this car. You would buy a Pontiac Firebird from the dealer then opt for the Tojan package and Knudsen would upgrade it. You can still get this kits for 80's FIrebird's and Camaro's today. The Camaro version was called the Carallo.

Why is everyone surprised they haven’t heard of this? He said Only about 130 were made. It’s not like this was a proper production car. It was a one off experiment. I’m guessing you could walk into most Pontiac dealers at the time and they wouldn’t know about it. GM used to occasionally have coach builders make weird limited run things like this. The Cadillac Mirage (el Camino) is another good example.

I was driving behind a guy who was driving one of the '85 Banshee trim Firebirds back in 89 or 90 when someone drug a trailer over the front end of it. Because the Banshee decals and such were all but impossible to replace back then even, he rebuilt it using a Tojan body with the huge rear wing.

Great video! I own the Pontiac Mera prototype. The 80s were really something! Seems like dealers were really keen to try different things in the form of rebodies and upgraded internals to entice buyers. The thing I find interesting is that with upgraded suspension and even power plant upgrades, warranties were still honored on these. My guys is that if anything on the engine changed, that warranty went away.

Found the following information: "Knudsen Automotive in Omaha, Nebraska, under consignment from GM, produced a total of 136 of these custom cars between 1984 and 1991. 123 hardtops and 13 convertibles were produced and all were based on the Firebird chassis. The custom creations were sold through a network of dealerships in California, Texas, New Jersey and Florida. Price tag for these custom cars ranged from $36,000 to $62,000 depending on the options chosen. Interestingly Tojan's made appearances on TV in Miami Vice, Alien Nation and the movie Collision Course."
