C:S keeps surprising, even after all these years... @Akuras, there's zero reason to defend the way you enjoy the game most. If vanilla or modded, growing or plopping, PO or additional assets: there's no right or wrong, it's all just about the fun. I wouldn't play your style, because I love to see the pieces in action, but that doesn't stop me from admitting: it's defnitely mind-blowing, I'm taking a bow Thanks for the entertainment

Something just dawned on me while explaining the game to someone, and doing a little bit of modding, seeing the level of detailing some people with better pc's than me can do. This level of customization today is a more like modern day model building in virtual reality; combined with city building. Nobody has to do this level of detailing or use things like TMPE to micromanage the functions of the game. But it's another level that extends the game's life.
@panner112 жыл бұрын
You make a good point. It does highlight the many ways to play this game and how detailed and granular you want to go. I've always enjoyed making functional systems the most in this game and watching things move around. As much I've thought about doing lots of PO stuff, I've realized I wouldn't be willing to put in the effort to do it on a large scale. I'm satisfied just watching amazing works like these.

@PauxloE3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. Some remarks (not really belonging together, but I guess better one long comment than 4 short ones.) → In real live I've more often seen sets of barges being pushed by an engine instead of being towed/pulled. Not sure why, I guess it gives some advantage in regards to maneuveribility and visibility (the person steering it sees all of it when looking forward, so you don't hit the bank without seeing it). With computerization, the visibility argument doesn't really count anymore. → I think we really need a mod (or maybe an external program) which can take things built by Procedural Objects and turn them back into models to be used for assets (i.e. buildings or even vehicles). For example, this could make your custom-built "barge train" an actually functional water vehicle which transports cargo, and your cargo cranes could become actually working cargo terminals. → Even if you say you don't really care whether it works, you might be actually be able to make this cargo harbor (at least partially) functional by using the barges mod. → 22:20 Building cities in Vanilla "would be like doing papercraft without scissors" - I guess that's called Origami?

Literally this game is nothing but a creative outlet for many of us content creators. We want to create something and put it out for the world to see. The act of creating is the meaning in itself, not just the mechanical gameplay (though that definitely adds a lot of more fun than just randomly placing 3d models). It's just a difference of personality. Some people enjoy mechanical functionality and others enjoy creative aesthetics. That's why there are engineers and why there are architects, as an example. There's nothing wrong with either, it's literally just a difference of how people prefer to enjoy the game.

@ArchTeryx003 жыл бұрын
What you're doing is essentially building a model railroad in the computer. Model railroads have tons of buildings and scenery that don't contribute to the functioning of the railroad, but make it look beautiful and realistic. If you just want to run trains, bare table will do, but almost no model railroader just wants to run trains. They want to run trains through artwork. What you are doing is exactly the same. You're making artwork. The game's just contributing vehicles and cims to it, so there's movement and animation, but in the end, it's still artwork. And some of your "kitbashes" (using parts of different objects to make a new model) are stunning. I love your customized dock cranes - really good job there. I really wish I could post a couple of my own pics to you. I'm currently working on a mine, ore processing facility and multi-mill which is both decorative AND functional. Most of the buildings are just there as props, but there are some block services that turn it into a working ore mine, which actually has traffic and contributes to the factory district near the port. I love the challenge of making stuff that's both beautiful and functional (sort of) within the game. Why just plop a rotary kiln plant when you can build an entire cement plant with actual rotating kilns? Few things more satisfying to me than building a custom ore highline (elevated track for dumping ore from rail cars) with the train slowly moving through the highline to "dump" the ore. ( And in English what you're thinking about on boats are "thrusters." Those are the perpendicular, ducted screws that allow ships side to side movement when docking and launching ).

Oh gosh what a small world. I love watching Plasmo. I don’t possess much talent to do what he does but I love watching it. It is very much so an art. A lot of the detailing that goes into these cities is very much a form of art in its own right. It’s the same concept as model railroading. You’re bringing a scene to life with all the little details that will never actually truly have any impact on how your train runs around the layout. But it looks great once you’ve done it!

PS, I know you just made this clear and all, but those support racks for containers make little sense on this scale since containers are interlocking, like not that or matters, but I think the ships would look a lot sleeker without them. The river container ships I saw when I lived in the west of the Netherlands were very memorable to me, they had in big font "Here goes 4 trucks" on them, really hammering home how efficient waterways are and always have been for mass transport of goods. This is one of my favourite little side builds so far, and am hype for the solar plant Also its been three years already.. Wow

It's a language thing I guess, in Czech "model building" clearly means building physical models usually from paper or plastic (scissors, glue) while origami is completely different thing. I usually use Wikipedia to find an article in Czech and select English, because that's the best way to get the proper word or phrase compared to just Translate, but there are no specific articles in this case so I used "papercraft", which often comes as the keyword on many "paper-scissors-glue" searches.

great episode and project. i was concerned about the controller for the crane till you pointed out the obvious AI aspect. the only detail you missed that i spotted was on the barges there needed to be a small cable winch on each corner to hold them in line. also in a massive port like that barges are frequently rigged abreast as well as in a single row. and the word you may have been searching for was probably prop but screw is pretty much universal. i would love to work at that port. beautiful work as usual.

All of its programming problems aside, this game is an ode to creativity, which means that you should play it in the way that it pleases you. There is no right or wrong way of playing the game, especially with mods the only limit is your imagination (and your PC specs since the Unity engine is absolute crap). Now... regarding the model making and the "lack of functionality". I don't know if you know or realize that you are actually an artist, at least that's my opinion of you. That being said, most of the time art doesn't have any actual function or utility but it does serve the very important purpose of stimulating the senses by expressing a thought, an idea or simply just being beautiful. Like you very well said some people like building model airplanes, cars and whatnot, you just happen to like to build virtual cities and there is nothing "lesser" about that. Even though my play-style is quite different than yours, I find all of your builds absolutely stunning and inspiring, with the added bonus of an insane amount of knowledge about the game mechanics and how to manipulate them. Keep up the good work and never mind the negative comments, this is the internet after all, you could be the nicest person to have ever lived and people would still find bad things to say about you xD P.S.: That outside connections trick you discovered, I think is an absolute game-changer and I cannot wait to find a way to implement it in my current city! I feel u. I don't play Cities: Skylines for now, because I had problems with launcher and I was kinda addicted to it, but I'm playing also Minecraft and I play only in the creative mode, sometimes with the WorldEdit mod (by it you can for example copy-paste and rotate buildings or in seconds build a giant walls or in few minutes a giant statues (due to cultural reasons I want to for example made a statue of pope John Paul II throwing a rock on my city.... Yeah.). I played a survival mode a few times, but always it had to end after few days, when I got everything what I need: the source of food, the home, some place to collect things, and the other place to make a food. And to be honest you don't need more in Minecraft. Of course you can build a base, give yourself some challenges (kill Dragon, kill Wither, etc.), but if you want to build something you need have in your inventory a lot of things. You need to have your own forest, and cut the trees and wai for new seeds from them. And if you will need new materials you need to go again and again to your mine, to your forest, to a desert, to nether, to other places. This takes time and is extremely boring. I just need to "play with bricks, with my blocks" to build something what will satisfy and will have logic sense in my eyes. So when I will go back to Citites Skylines I probably will play on some of the mods that you are using and I will spend hours to detail one small district or make one street more bike-friendly. Thanks for your material
@unknownPLfan3 жыл бұрын
I like that cities skylines does let you sort have a nice in-between between pretty dioramas and functionality. For me it would actually bother me if you didn't make the city at all functional and the more you can balance functionality with modeling, the better this is. It's fine to have these decorative elements built on top of something that's essentially computer code that just says "generate cargo to here." The vanilla buildings frankly aren't much more functional beyond having the little people walk around and having some of the same lines of computer code built into them. I'd argue that a procedural object with a service cube or a hidden service building under it isn't any less functional. I'm curious though if this port functional in the sense that it generates water traffic (that maybe you can keep hidden), or attracts water traffic, or does it just generate cargo? Is it like a cargo airport without airplanes?
@andrestock28673 жыл бұрын
I also modell a lot of buildings and stuff in CS by myself, but still keep it nearly all functional. After playing city-builder games since the first days of it (starting with SimCity 2000), I was so happy about CS and all the possibilities we have there, cause the new SimCity was so disappointing after waiting so many years for it.

This topic is something I think about a lot when watching these detailer CS videos -- it's basically an elaborate train set. The gameplay mechanics are just another kind of decoration you use to bring the model to life. I do sometimes wonder why these creators don't put all of this time and energy into learning Blender or something instead? Then you could make functional assets or even just make your own animations or 3D printed models or whatever…
@jcc50183 жыл бұрын
I love watching your builds. I am moving into more custom builds myself. YOu can only drag and drop districts so many times before it gets boring. But the extent of my customization is a lot of manual plopping or maybe combining a few assets. Haven't dived into PO yet as I still want to have my city functional. Definitely would never have considered breaking a tractor apart just to get the holding bars for your barge. I know you have been doing this project 3 years, but I'm wondering how many actual hours would you say it takes per each of your edited videos? I'm assuming the 3 years had a lot of breaks in between as most big projects do. I also noticed you dont have a lot of your submitted assets on the workshop. But with your skill set, I think you could provide a lot of value. Have you played with blender or any of the other programs the creators use? From my little experience, its really a lot like PO in functionality. If you did start cranking out assets, I have a feeling I'd be subscribing to all of them.

Cities: Skylines as a building city simulator can't get even close to what mods can create in visuals and actual representation of how a town actually is. Trying to focus just in the basic gameplay aspect means to fight an absurd traffic flow, huge differences in building sizes an infinite demand of random needs, death waves... creating an actual working city for the game is something we all can do and it'd be ultra boring unless we spice it somehow. That's where the decorative part comes to enhance the game and that's why Cities: Skylines 2 isn't coming, as no visual augmentation could even grasp the level of creativity we have with this basic tool and a ton of modders, asset creators or actual builders. Watching Akruas you can notice how Cities: Skylines isn't just a "follow the rules and get the maximum number of citizens" game, it's also a tool for visual creativity. And having to explain or even justify something so obvious means that there are people that doesn't even understand the kind of game they are playing.

You know something, yes cities skylines was probably made to create/simulate real life cities as best as it can. However somethings are made better when they are doing things they weren't intended to do. There are many examples of such things. Cities skylines became a better game becuase of mods and assets and the ability to create whatever you want, you can build your own city regardless if functionality or realism, it brings people's imaginations out and that's what people love.

With model and terrain building made in the tabletop wargaming community it's almost the opposite. Tutorial videos, Work in Progress pictures and so on is immensly popular and you cant have a sucessful Instagram account or KZbin channel if you only show finished stuff
