Ah the N&W, one of my favorite fallen flag railroads. I have fond memories of seeing N&W 611 and 1218 running through Chattanooga, TN. N&W was a good railroad that valued its steam locomotives. Shame none of the Y6Bs made it into preservation. I really think 2174 would have been a perfect excursion star. They really liked their Y class “Chesapeake” locomotives and A class 2-6-6-4 simple articulated locomotives.

N&W is my second favorite defunct railroad (my first being southern) and their one of the few railroads that truly perfected the mallet reciprocating designs as well as using steam power long after most other railroads completely dieselised.

It’s not really defunct. It’s just under collective management. NS still letters its diesels with little letters under the road number. These are either for N&W, SOU, CR, or NS

Smart choice, the Norfolk & Western railroad was the King of Steam locomotives. They built the vast majority of their own steam locomotives, my favorite steam locomotives are the Norfolk & Western J class 4-8-4 number 611, the Southern Pacific GS-4 Lima built 4-8-4 number 4449 which I have the Kato N scale of it & the Morning Daylight set which is my model railroad excursion train & the AC-12 4-8-8-2 Baldwin built cab forward steam locomotive number 4294 which is on display at the California state railroad museum in Sacramento-those are my 3 most favorite steam locomotives of all time.

Great video! I love the way the drivers moving goes with the music. This reminded me of something-I first saw 611 at the NC transportation Museum, very early in my railfanning career ( I didn't know she was on lease), I didn't know how special she was, and didn't get a picture. Norfolk & Western had the right singer C.W.McCall sing the song Cargo Moving People from N&W Railway for its advertisement in the mid 1970’s and the song with the video of Norfolk & Western steam powered locomotive pulling freight and the J Class streamlined 4-8-4 which number 611 still pulls excursion trains. Norfolk & Western was the King of Steam Locomotives which they built the vast majority of their own locomotives in their Roanoke, VA shops. The Norfolk & Western Steam Locomotives had the very best sounding whistles. The late O.Winston Link took many photos of Norfolk & Western Steam Locomotives and did the Norfolk & Western justice. I have the book The last steam railroad in America which is about the Norfolk & Western Steam operations in the 1950’s.

yea I heard, and throttle time too, and its cheaper priced then throttle time with 765, at the cayahoga scenic railroad, though both are a rare and expensive propisition for most, 765 just by being a voleenter there, as I live 40 miles from her hq in new haven indiana I have been in every part of that loco but the actual boiler, I been in the firebox, cab, smoke box, tender tank, coal bunker, and under her when I had to help collect oil samples last year, that was a messy proposition, I even got to help bank the fire 2 times at the open house and throw a bit of coal, a hand full of times but usually such things are practice for the actual crew in trainning, before firing on trips, and the cab on a late summers day is a hot place to be, but what a rare rare occurance in this day and age with amtrak being the way it is, new restorations starting up all the time, though with the tight timetables the railroads run its not the halcron days of the 1990's and before, heck even the new river train is canceled this year, due to rising costs, and that was the last mainline excursion on the east side of the usa, 54 years running, they still want to do it but it wont happen this year, that is to say they still want it to happen and so does amtrak but they could not meet in the middle to make it happen for this year not the way it is.

Joesph Mueller, the N&W never ran a freight to the DuPont Nylon plant in Seaford,DE. The rail line is today the Delmarva(Maryland & Delaware) from The C & D Canal to Salisbury,MD. Before that in the early it was Conrail. It was Penn Central from 1968 to 1976 when Conrail took it over. Before 1968, it was the Pennsylvania railroad. Norfolk Southern will use the line.

If they did manage to have gotten pensy back in the day, it might have been a better idea than penn central, beucase n&w and pensy had big steamers and lots of 1st gen diesels and all had mallets, or duplexes and switchers, and they did happen to haul coal, maybe not all the time, but n&w Unlike pensy was big for coal that why everyone remebers this song because you see coal you think n&w or PRR or both

@@penginator89 yeah when I made this comment, this was actually before the East Palestine disaster, so you can chalk it up to a change of views since then. Perhaps Norfolk Southern in the early days could’ve been more fitting of what I said in the first comment but I can’t say for sure as I don’t know much of how railroads were in the 1990s and the 1980s. Hopefully stuff like the east Palestine disaster will prove that greater regulation for safety is needed and will hopefully end PSR because if stuff like that keeps happening, I can bet you that the government will basically tell the railroads to shape up or they might threaten to nationalize them in order to get them to do what they’re supposed to. that being said, I do think Norfolk Southern definitely is capable of being improved so long as it learns from these mistakes.
