I wondered if my NuWay propane heater would be able to warm up our little camp trailer at sub zero temperatures. It was minus 12 INSIDE the trailer to start! Watch the video to see how it performed.

What I see in this video is a man that likes hanging out in his fort he built. Nothing better than hanging out in your camp. Just as when your a kid and built some sort of shelter in the back yard or a blanket over a couple of chairs. The kid never leaves some of us inside. Nice camper.

If you have an insulated intake air pipe it would provide plenty of oxygen but not cool down the room as much as opening the window does.
@TexasBarnRats
@TexasBarnRats 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed. The air supply only needs to be a fraction more than the volume of propane being combusted. A 1" air supply is probably plenty for a heater that small. Assess by looking at the flame...if at least 2/3 blue, you're fine.

Drill a 1" hole behind the stove just below the body height of the stove so you can draw air in at that point then put a pipe in with a bend on it pointing up into the stove. Put a downward facing bend outside so when you are driving no debris gets settles into it. That will allow it to draw fresh air in for the stove and if you are sleeping in the trailer.

It's good to enjoy simple things and ponder on what is good and wholesome. So often we forget to be thankful for the little things. I rebuild vintage trailers, and I can't tell you the joy of finding old bubble front frigs from the 40's that still purr, and vintage propane heaters from 1950 (panelray) that are just waiting to have you enjoy a coffee in front of while the snow falls. I think it pleases God when we quit getting and recline into thank you.Thank you new friend. I used to go to Bisbee's Shady Dell vintage RV park for the winter and Loved it. Great memories. You can line the roof of the trailer with solar panels and charge a battery which can power a heater on a thermostat. You can build a battery pack out of old laptop or tool batteries. 1 or 2 go bad but the other 6 or so have years left in them. You can buy some Samsung 25r 18650 for $4. Very easy to do at home and cheap.

Something you might consider would be the logistics of the heater in the trailer. As you mentioned the exhaust going up the chimney is being replaced by cold air coming into the trailer, in this case because you open the window but regardless it would find its way in there. If your stove had an outside source of air which many of them do and yours can be retrofitted to have it, I know for sure you would not be taking the air that is heated already in the trailer and sending it up the chimney.

@@gonagain It makes NO SENSE to spend 5 figures on a trailer and then be forced to spend green money to take it out of and then put it back into service by "wintering" for several months of the year. Most dedicated RVers genuinely fear cold and hot weather because they are so uncomfortable. A modern automobile has a fully automated climate control system that simply works with hardly any effort or attention. Your recreational trailer needs the same capability. In three months I'll be testing mine.
@gonagain
@gonagain 5 жыл бұрын
Are you doing any videos on your project? It would be nice to see. My normal mode of climate control has been to take the trailer and chase 70 degrees, but I got stuck here this past winter with some health issues. I ready to go again though.

@salbers
@salbers 5 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering about the theory of heat flow here. Propane tanks draw heat from the air to vaporize the liquid propane inside. This is demonstrated by the more tank surface area the better they vaporize. Therefore the MORE surface area exposed to the MORE air flow generates more heat to vaporize and insulating tanks is counterproductive.

Awesome. You answered my question b4 I had a chance to ask it. Ty I did however noticed something on your video which I thought it to be troubled. Hope you don't mind me giving you a useful tip. You had your fire extinguisher right next to the fire source (the stove) in an event of a fire it is human nature to run away. Perhaps putting the extinguisher at arms reach from the door (exit) would serve duel purpose. 1) escape , cause your life is worth a lot more than the trailer. 2) you can fight the fire from the doorway. Just my 2 cents. Ty for the video, I always wondered if a setup like that would be worth it. I like it .

I have the exact same size trailer with 1" foam insolation all around, (except rear ramp door). I have a 5 kw diesel air heater. In -27C, it heats up the trailer to 25C in about an hour. @@dave3464 I have 2 105ah deep cycle AGM batteries. So they last 3 days without to deeply discharged. Right now. I'll need shore power to recharge, but I'm planning to install solar. I don't have exact measurements of fuel. But a 10 liter tank can last 25hrs at full blast.

Propane does not emit carbon monoxide when burned. Chemically speaking, propane is pretty interesting stuff. Propane's byproducts are carbon dioxide and water vapor when combusted.
@Stepclimb
@Stepclimb 5 жыл бұрын
Rufus Jones Please stop spreading misinformation. PROPANE WILL PRODUCE CO WHEN BURNED INCOMPLETELY! If the burner is slightly out of adjustment, a rich burn could result and Carbon Monoxide will be produced! I suggest you read up on non-stoichiometric burning of hydrocarbons. A good place to start is propane101.com and select “about propane”. It explains propane’s limits of flammability.

@@Stepclimb Correct. That is exactly what I was going to add. In a complete combustion reaction, it will NOT produce CO, but ideal conditions are not always present. It is always good to have this relatively inexpensive safety measure just in case.
@TexasBarnRats
@TexasBarnRats 5 жыл бұрын
Duh, anything burned incompletely will create an undesired byproduct. Just do a test run for a few hours the look at the open flame to confirm it's blue. It's pretty tough to NOT completely combust an open-burning propane flame, such as what the OP is using. Unvented propane combustion is used every day in American with no ill effect. Non-industrial grade CO detectors give a false sense of security...my eyeball and flame color observation is far more reliable.

In my small town in Northern Wisconsin, a homeless woman is living in a van (broken down - in need of repairs). She has been here for a couple of months, through the coldest part of February when temps dropped to 30 degrees below 0 (Farhrenheit). Mostly she is using white gas in some kind of stove, and getting a lot of help from townspeople. She won't go into a shelter because she has two small cats and two small dogs, and she refuses to leave them. Between bouts of arctic air, we have been getting clobbered with snow (over four feet in February alone), which piles up on the top of her van, melts from the heat inside, and seeps into the cracks of the doors causing them to freeze. Several times she has been trapped in the van. Fortunately, she has a phone and internet and she can ask for help on her Facebook page - so far somebody has always come to her rescue.

G'day ol' mate. Great job!! Those temps you were mentioning are wicked. As far as I know, even 0℉ has never been experienced here in Oz. That's bloody cold!! The coldest we've experienced locally has been about -5℃, lol. We're a pack of whimps. A lot of heat is lost through the flue, if you think it is necessary, you could fabricate a shroud to fit over the flue, sealed at the top and a smallish vent hole through the wall & connected into the shroud area would allow the air lost through the flue to be preheated from the flue gas travelling down the shroud space into the van. External fFins on the flue would increase the heat exchange efficiency, it's just a matter of how much work you want to do. Saves cracking a window. If no flap was installed outside on the air inlet, it could serve as a permanent vent. And the overall efficiency increases as the number of bodies inside increases. Cheers ol' mate, job well done 🇦🇺 🍺🍺

Yes, that is called a closed loop gas furnace and requires power blowers, safety interlocks and attention to insure every joint and fitting is well sealed. The heater already heats the trailer just fine...why bother? A simple hole in the floor, directly beneath the heater would do the same thing. If a pipe is used with great ingenuity, the air can be pre-warmed before entering the combustion chamber. Keep it simple if at all.
