Making a visual flyover above the airfield followed by a long left turn above the Zurich Highlands and a spectacular landing on runway 29 of that small airfield. Airport LSMD has two runways. One is 2900 feet long as stated below, but the other is 7,540. This plane landed on the longer runway.

To Sweens 06,fire fighting trucks followed this 747...cause of the short runway....afraid that the excessive use of brakes may overheat the gears due to short runway...and may cause fire ....

I know the pilot of this airplane very well. He started his flying career with flying sailplanes and is a very expierencend pilot ;) They trained this approach in a simulator a couple of times before, to figure out the best approach and landing techniques. Neverless a spectacular landing!

There is no "different landing techniques" in a B747 or any other airliner out there. Either your runway is sufficient as per SOP's and Aircraft peerformance manual or it is not. This isn't general aviation, there isn't short field take-off and landing techniques applicables to airliners or cargo planes of that size.

Given the mere 2.350 (or so) metres of the strip, the landing has been perfectly executed by the crew. Textbook landing with the smooth roar of the Rollers... beautiful.

Are you guys serious? 2200m is a standard length landing runway, more than enough for any airliner at landing. Lufthansa is running daily A340s out of Düsseldorf to Canada and USA (and back) using similar runways.

OMG, you guys are so annoying. Can't you just enjoy the video? I live in a small city in Brazil and I remember the first time a 747 landed here. Many spotters and aviation lovers went to the airport to watch that landing, cause it wasn't a normal event for this airport. So, the spectacular thing isn't the landing, the short runway or the 747 itself, it's all about a big plane, landing on a small airfield where it has never been before.

This runway is more than long enough, a Landing distance of over 7500ft. Scheduled passenger services saw Qantas operate regular 747-200's in and out of Wellington NZ (NZWN), a 6000ft runway.

I think it was needed to land nearly at the threshold, cause of the short field. If you read the description it says that it was the Biggest aircraft landing on the airfield. So think first and then comment.

KL773ER is technically correct. In most commercial aircraft landings you aim for the aiming markers. The PAPIs and Glide will take you beyond the piano keys. If you landed on the piano keys in LHR you would be way too low (4 reds on papis) However in this circumstance on a limiting runway it is acceptable (and prudent) to use all the length available. Little room for error so not something you want to/should do everyday, but well done nonetheless.

I believe you've mistaken your airports. That is not Düsseldorf. While Düsseldorf may handle international widebody ops this runway is not only 1000m shorter, it is also approx 5m narrower.

what is wrong with you? he just stated point of view and btw. is absolutely right. a normal touchdown has to be planned about 300m from the threshold. in this case the pilot decided to land earlier, which is perfectly fine for a runway like this.

jonas28727 Der ganze Anlass an sich war ein Spektakel, der Jumbo landete auf einem nicht mehr intakten Flugplatz und wer selber dabei war (Es waren viele Leute dort :D ) kann bestätigen, dass es irgendwie ein Spektakel war. Aber dies ist natürlich Ansichtssache :)

Yes I read the description. What made it spectacular was that the 747 was the biggest airliner to land at that airport. Well, the fact that it landed there still wasn't spectacular. It was quite a comfortabke landing. Try putting one of them down on a 15m wide runway that is only 2/3 of the recommended length required for one to land safely... now THAT is spectacular.

About three months ago an Atlas Air Super Jumbo inadvertently landed at a small airport near Wichita, Kansas. Jabara field is specifically designed for planes as large as a twin turbo prop. Fortunately the plane was empty-it's used to haul structural parts for the 787-otherwise the landing and departure would have been very different stories. They caught an enormous break in that on the landing the wind was strong and straight from the South. By the time they got it turned, a new crew brought in and a take off was make, the wind had shifted 180 degrees and was around 30mph. On a map, if you choose to look, you'll see that Jabara, Beech Field and McConnell AFB are almost in a straight line. Initially, the pilot thought he was at Beech Aircraft and there was, for a few minutes, no clue as to where they really were. McConnell tower kept asking if they were on the ground. In answer to the person who complained that the landing was no big deal, this was. What they can do with these planes is amazing and more amazing are the men who fly them. After takeoff and making a standard approach to the AFB, the time elapsed was eleven minutes.
