I always hang dry mine all the time. I am from Nuiqsut Alaska and we use the skins for bedding underneath our sleeping bags when we are camping

Those holes on the skin are from warble flies, the black flies lay eggs under the skin, the larva eat the fat and the meat around where they're at under the skin in the wintertime and then in the springtime they crawl out through the nose and mouth. The caribou cough them up and sneeze them out in the spring time.

I have a hide that's been with us for more 40+ years

Be gentle with it, older hides tend to be a little brittle and a favorite snack for insects. If you have had it for that long, you’re caring for it properly. Thanks for viewing.

What kind of tumbler dp you use for it?

Homemade tumbler, measures 8 ft high by 10 ft wide. 2 compartments, 1 side enclosed to use sawdust, other side with holes so impurities fall out.
