Bumble bees do make honey, but if it was just a one time thing feeding that bee was fine, it was probably just old. Just don’t leave bowls of sugar water out, it might cause the other bees to start using that since it’s easier than going from flower to flower, and that would cause them to make watery honey, which doesn’t have much nutrients in it, so it’s not very healthy for them. The sugar water thing was really just a Facebook rumor, but tons of people fall for those everyday, so it’s okay!

Butterfly Pavilion (United States-based invertebrate zoo) volunteer here! Thanks for taking this little one in, so many people wouldn't think twice about trying to improve an invertebrate's quality of life. Most of what you talked about was exactly right, and your set up looked great for a disabled butterfly such as the one you've got! An unflighted butterfly doesn't need as much space as most people would think to thrive, your enclosure is a good size. I'd just like to throw in a few notes for anyone reading through the comments ^-^ If you have to handle a butterfly, even an uninjured one (Removing it from your clothing as you go inside, etc), use a glove if you can (If you can't, just try to keep contact short and gentle) and use the "scissor grip". Take your index and middle finger, approach from behind, and place one on either side of the butterfly's four wings. Never pick them up by their body, and try to avoid any contact with their legs. When releasing, don't place them down on a surface if they're able to fly. Instead, gently toss and release. Butterflies taste with their feet and they're super sensitive, so placing them down on a surface or letting their feet touch your fingertips could damage them and significantly shorten their lifespan. Good luck!

I love this! Especially with monarch's population going down, this is a nice video to share! I have a tip on watering them, though. Grab some marbles and put them in a shallow container (only enough to cover the bottom) and put some water in the container. The butterfly should be able to walk on the marbles while grabbing a quick sip of water without drowning! You can use this for bees too, and it's perfect for gardens!
@beakerling3 жыл бұрын
While it is nice to think of helping a damaged monarch as helping the population, a damaged butterfly is never going to reproduce and oviposit again. If you want to help population decline of monarch butterflies, the better option is to plant native host species of the monarch butterfly in your garden and influence your own states decision-makers to make biodiversity a priority. Butterflies generally need two different types of plants, one for nectar in their adult butterfly stage and one for their caterpillars to eat. Please look up which plants are native in your state/province and are important for the monarchs, it really is the best way to help these magnificent creatures so they are not lost for our future generations.

this really made me happy, you're amazing for doing this, and that butterfly really trusts you, and i can tell she's happy for the time she's got even if she cant fly! also, every time i see a bee that can't fly, i get a flower other bees go to when the bees aren't at that area and somewhere else in the yard, and give it to the bee, i saved three and sadly two died, but hey, at least i gave them a chance for the last 15 mins they got, right? by the way if you were wondering, no, i didn't actually touch the bee i got a stick that wouldn't hurt the bee or anything and then put the bee on there and i set the stick down near more flowers and then gave the flower to the bee, and i sat not too close to where i'd scare the bee, but where i can watch the bee so i know if they're ok or not, and sometimes i leave for a min to see if that helps them calm down, and usually it does, but after i come back to see if they flew away or not. Idk if i'm doing the right thing the way i try to help them or not but at least i did save three, two almost drowned and one couldn't fly for some reason, but i helped them, and two didn't make it.

They will guzzle the juice from cut up watermelon pieces with great alacrity! I think the red color probably helps them home in on it as well. I picked up a weakened straggler today on my way to work, took it in where it’s warm (I’m from michigan and it’s beginning to get cold) and left it in a container with a nice bit of melon. I observed it drinking from the fruit with extended proboscis; and not long after that the little animal was vigorously trying to escape its habitat so I took it outside. It began to rapidly shake; almost vibrating for a moment then flew off with what appeared to me to be more or less full strength! It cleared a road at an altitude of at least 12 feet then veered about 45 degrees and rose to about 40 feet and fluttered off out of sight! It was a very happy occasion. But it must make it all the way to Mexico- a journey that takes at least 1-2 months. I’m very proud to have helped the little animal and I enjoyed observing it during our brief period together. I hope it makes it to the big monarch gathering

I knew it. I wasn't the only one who who had a very soft spot for animals. I literally can't kill a cockroach.

I'm so glad I've found another person who takes care of insects! My family makes fun of me for it and it's hard to find proper care guides when I'm not sure what to do. It seems to be a bit of a tradition for pregnant white tiger moths to wonder into the house and become exhausted. Though I usually don't know they're pregnant until I find the eggs. Sugar water works as a great substitute, works for flies and bees as well! Thank you for this video, made me feel a lot better!

Thank you so much for posting this! i found an injured butterfly while hiking with my dog today and my instinct was to fill a small bottle cap with sugar water but i wanted to be sure i was helping not harming. Your video is very informative and helpful, thank you so much! Blessings 💜🙏🏽🦋

I also used to live in new zealand and we used to buy swan plants in the summer and care for caterpillars and one of the butterflies had crinkled wings and did basically the same thing that you’re doing but she only lived 2 days sadly :(

I took care of a butterfly for a while, I mixed a bit of sugar with some water and put it in a cotton ball, I also got a bit of dirt and put it with some water and rocks because what I found when I looked it up was that butterflies find puddles and get nutrients from them. The butterfly later on flew off with some coaxing

You are an amazing person! I'm doing the same thing right now had one turn into a chrysalis early when it was still little, and it hatched, but it's wings are all messed up, so I'm going to take care of it, because it can't fly!

My siblings and me always made it our mission to save all bugs from our pool and we didn't realy know how to care for them, so we just sat them on flowers in a corner of our garden with a lot of sunshine.

Monarch butterflies are so rare where I live at. I never find monarch butterfly in th summer, mainly because I live in Brandenburg Kentucky and where I live there are lots and lots of houses and buildings being built and it destroys the trees where monarch butterflies love to rest.
