The birth of a child is one of life’s most joyous moments, but for those whose babies are born prematurely, the trauma of unexpected and early birth can be devastating - with months of uncertainty to follow.
This doc follows the story of pre-term babies, the experiences their parents face and the journey of bringing their children home.
In this episode:
High risk pregnancy
Julie is 30 weeks pregnant but her baby’s growth rate isn’t sufficient for a normal birth. She has been in hospital for the last month being closely monitored as last year she had a still birth due to the same problem; blood flow from the placenta to the baby is not which affects baby’s development. This is called growth restriction and is one of the main causes of premature births.
Charlotte and her partner Chris have hardly left their baby’s side after giving birth only 25 weeks into her pregnancy. A birth this early used to mean giving up straight away but nowadays babies this young can be kept alive in incubators that mimic the state of the womb. Although even with their baby receiving 24/7 intensive care, his fate is still hanging in the balance… a situation no parent knows how to handle.

My first was born at 28 weeks and due to complications that actually caused the premature birth along with genetics that she happened to be the one to inherit, just like I did, (we did not know how big the risk of passing on the genetic condition actually was when I had her 16 years ago and my parents were told my dad's condition was not genetic at all when he had myself and my two brothers. One of my brothers inherited it the youngest didn't) which involves our digestive system as well as musculoskeletal system. We almost lost her twice as they delivered her and got her to NICU and I almost bled to death during the emergency c section. My youngest was born at 34 weeks but the pregnancy was grueling with labor kicking in at 19 weeks and not stopping for 15 weeks! Yes 15 weeks i am one of the "lucky few" where they can give a bolus dose of mag sulfate and it actually causes not only the contractions to slow it also reverts dilation for a short time. In both pregnancies it was about every 3 hours my contractions would get to 1 min or less apart and i would be dilated to 4.5cm, 5cm and they have to deliver, i was on constant iv drip with the first and would go in every night with my second until they finally admitted me. They didn't admit me until viability with my second so it was very stressful for awhile knowing if I waited too long to go in, if I didn't pay attention to the constant contractions it would all be over. I did the same every 3 hours, dilate to 4.5cm contractions 1 min or less apart and bolus dose then it reverted to 1.5cm dilated and contractions 5 min apart but 5 min apart was the best we ever could get. I was overdosed 3 times on the mag sulfate with the first and twice with my second. It was scary cuz I'd fall asleep then wake up gasping for air realizing I was forgetting to breath. The kids are 14 and 16 now and pretty healthy other than the couple things my oldest has but they are both extremely intelligent and my youngest finally grew out of her lung issues. Born at 2lb 10oz my first : and 5lb 9oz my second.

I was born almost 2 months early. I weighed like 3 pounds. I had to stay in an incubator for a month. Then I was sent home with a SIDS monitor because at night I would stop breathing. So my nana would wake up whenever the monitor went off and she would get me to breathe again. Then i cried for like 2 months straight and started losing weight because my esophagus wasn’t fully open. I had surgery and then I could eat and get stronger. I’m 21 now and I’m still living with my nana and now I’m taking care of her.

My sister could fit on a palm of hand the day she was born doctors told my mother she wasnt going to make it. We took her home and mother made her own incubator, put bags of warm water to keep sister warm. She would dip a cloth in milk to feed her until she was big enough to drink from a regular baby bottle. Now she is a beautiful healthy woman in her 40s 😊

*This brings back so many memories to me!! My son was born at 23wks only weighing 1lb 5oz!! He was born with lung disease and some mild retina issues which his eyes eventually healed on their own. His lungs however... it was tough bc he was on oxygen until 7 months, then until he was a lil over 6 years, every cold turned into pneumonia! He's now 13 with asthma issues but the only time his asthma is scary is when he gets sick! He's a big boy, he's super smart and we're truly blessed that he's so healthy!! His doctor in the nicu was Dr Jen Arnold (the wife on the little people) and she is one heck of an amazing Doctor!!!*

I was born at 30 weeks and have similar issues with my lungs, even still. Tell him that he’s not alone and there’s someone out there who understands the issues with getting sick and having pneumonia a lot! Tell him it makes him stronger, to be able to handle that, and to always look on the bright side! A little bit of a fun side note: breathing through a nebulizer makes you sound like Darth Vader a bit.

My brother was born 2 months and a half early, he was born asleep (he wasn't breathing and his heart was beating slower and slower). The doctor just stood there and watched him die. An ambulance picked him up in a incubator he went to a different hospital. He was in the hospital for at least 4 months. Thank God his weight was at least okay... He did survive one deadly disease and many more. He's now a 1 year old happy baby, yes he still doesn't know how to crawl or walk but at least he's with us! God bless him!

The infection Harvey had NEC a large majority of the time happens when they feed your baby formula to add extra weight. My niece was nursing her preemie (by pumping) and the doctors made it sound as if he HAD to add formula to grow bigger faster. They never warned her of the risk. It almost killed him. Just her breast milk would have been plenty for him to grow. Don't feel bullied by doctors. Know the risk, always ask questions, and most importantly listen to your gut as a mother!

@@aliciajackson9880 yeah, I have seen those. He is 3 now (he will be 4 March 31st). His doctor said he is still suffering from the effects and is only in the 5th percentile for height and weight. Most premies born at 32 weeks have caught up by his age, so the doctor thinks it's from the NEC, the surgeries that followed and all the complications. I'm not sure if my niece is apart of the lawsuit or not. I for sure think her son should be compensated for the pain he has went through or any further complications, though I pray there is none. At least enough for his medical bills, and college would be nice. His name is Arlo and he is my whole heart❤

The Rollercoaster of NICU is like nothing you ever go through anywhere else. One step forward then a hard crash two or more steps back sometimes. The times when things were going so well and in a second all the monitors blare and you look at the tiny little baby you've been staring at for hours, all you did was blink or turn your head for a second and your world is spinning. All of a sudden your waiting out in the waiting room again and waiting for any word of what's going on behind the doors with your fragile little one. Your heart is shattering but you don't dare lose it because it will break you and you can't afford to lose your calm when you have seconds to make decisions that you have no idea if you're making right or wrong so the doctors can rush back away to do what they need, or sadly as i watched a few parents go through make that final decision not to keep going. That was so hard to see the pain in their eyes as they walked out for the last time with their arms empty. The day i finally took my first one home i was so scared she was still so small but I just wanted her home and with us and healthy. I walked off the elevator out those front doors, after car trouble all day ect, finally with my daughter in her tiny car seat at 12:03 AM exactly one month before her due date. She was delivered at 12:03AM the night they had to do the emergency c section. I didn't even notice the time thing until I was putting some information down in her baby book one day and looking through the first few pages again.

*The worst thing about having a baby in the NICU for a long time is that you can't stay with them overnight!! I'm in the U.S (Pittsburgh, Pa actually) and for 4 months, I had to drive almost an hour to they hospital everyday!! Our hospitals don't have parents rooms to stay in at all!! If course you could find a hotel closer, but if you can't afford that then your out of luck!! I really wish they would find more options, especially if your baby is in bad health!! I truly feel like the hospitals should open homes close by the hospitals for parents to stay! I have to say though, there were a lot of babies in the NICU that was born way to early!! When i had my son, in 2007, I never really heard of babies so tiny so I was shocked to see so many micro premies!! And the saddest part of the NICU is the little sweet babies that don't have parents or any family members visiting!! It's heartbreaking!!*

@@kyratompsett4409 My son was born in Pittsburgh, PA and there's no place close by unless you pay for a hotel every night! I feel so bad for parents that can't afford to travel every day to see their babies that are in the NICU!! After my son was well enough to go home from hospital, we did stay at at The Children's Home Of Pittsburgh. It's a transitional home to prepare parents with babies before going home so you know how to handle all their machines and if issues accure. Its wonderful!! Hospitals don't really help you prepare with those issues and I was so thankful for what they taught me bc it was very scary but knowing a lot!! But as for whole he was in the nicu, I drove up every day 45 minutes away! But also, I was blessed that I didn't live even further bc a lot of those parents did!!

I mean this in a kind way, but it's for the best Kieran passed. He wasn't healthy and he needed to go be with God after how much he went through. I hope the family recovers well, but I am also happy that a possible life long struggle has been lifted off their shoulders. Again, I know how this sounds, but I do believe that baby is with God and is happy now and I know the family will have an easier time having a healthy baby. It'll be a great reunion one day in Heaven

My mom had lost the baby born before me and he weighed 5 lbs. 8 oz. my grandma said she would stay with him overnight but the hospital would not let her. They said he would have a nurse take care if he stopped breathing. Well, he stopped breathing, no nurse in sight. It was 1945. Maybe that’s why. The hospital I was born in has been boarded up for a very long time, I will be 73 in Nov.

I met a beautiful woman who was a premature baby. She grew up to be a modest woman who seemed like she was the type of person who would never talk down to anyone. She told me that she has glaucoma. This has to do with her being premature. At least there are eye drop medicine for her eyes. She must have caught it early like she was expecting this which could of been scary to her family,

When i was fed, i literally grabbed that bottle like it was a million dollars. Still salty about that, ngl. I was concerned bcs immediately after birth he started to shed his skin almost as a snake.... And grew very fast, especially his little head. I was changing his hoodie every week until he reached two months. Now he’s 30, big talent with drawing, sports, computers and languages. Thanks god for this happy ending.

I was born in 1957 and weighed 1lb 13oz my parents were told l would die and to hold me while a passed my dad said no way and tucked me into his shirt. My mum was very ill so he stayed for 3 days just holding me. After 3 days they said there was a very slight improvement so dad went home for a few hours and l stopped breathing so after they tended me rang dad to come back as soon as l was on his chest l was able to breathe better. Dad stayed at the hospital for a month caring for me and my mum. After a month l had gained 2lb but would only settle with dad it was decided to take me home because my siblings needed their parents as well. Dad took 3 months leave and basically held me for 3 months l progressed very quickly and at my 3 month checkup l was 8lb 4oz. The only problem l had was rheumatoid arthritis from aged 5. I gave birth to 3 healthy kids my biggest 13lb 8oz with no drugs. In my senior years l still suffer with arthritis but am mum to an 8 yr old l adopted.

I'm the operating room nurse who takes the operating room to the NICU. I've circulated and scrubbed on the MASH style surgeries done on the patients who are too unstable to transport to surgery. I call them my "tinies". They are the most delicate and precious patients I care for, and I'm blessed to be part of the team who keeps them alive. My mother was gravely ill and septic when she went into labor with me. We had less than a 50% chance of survival, and my mom didn't meet me until I was 2 weeks old. My father never visited me (or my mother), because she was so ill that the doctor feared that she would die. Of course, that would have made me a ward of the state. My father had no intention of taking me home. The nurses were the ones who cuddled me when my mother was too ill. That may be why I'm so protective of the sickest babies. I was one of them. Someone was kind. I don't know who she was, but I can carry on her legacy.
