I grew up with big island plantation raised parents. Watching your family really reminds me of my grandmother and mother’s dishes. It brings back wonderful memories of our family parties and the videos are teaching me how to cook too! Thank you!

They sell plastic Musabi molds at Daiso. Or you can use the Spam container also. When we lived Big Island our favorite was Kay's Kitchen on the Mamalohoa Highway. I now make Tofu Musabi at home=). Mahalo for sharing 'Local Style' with us.

Another iconic Hawaii staple that is perfect for summer...spam musubi are definitely a convenient and satisfying snack or meal for a day at the beach or potluck. Iyasume Cafe is usually our go-to place for musubi in Hawaii. Although the original spam version is nostalgic and I enjoy it, I like the option of tofu and will forward your recipe to my vegan family members. How quickly the time flies...Aiko is soon to become a big sister.... お誕生日おめでとう happiest of birthday wishes to the little princess! ✨🌺✨

Hau'oli Lā Hānau Aiko! What a great idea tofu musubi with hapa rice. While living in Germany, I didn't have the musubi maker so I used the can. Worked out great and lots of non locals who weren't fond of spam were converted! I make my spam musubi exactly that way, but I dont cut it. I have three former football player sons, I knew one was not going to be enough and the way they eat, I'd be wrapping and making spam musubi for days. They thought it was maki sushi. Fool them!
@Caritaira3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kalea! I've heard of using the can as a musubi maker! I can imagine with 3 boys it wouldn't be worth cutting the musubi's into half sizes. haha!

Happy Birthday little Aiko chan!! Kawaii ne!!! Oooooh! I LOVE your mama's wooden musubi mold!! Tokyo Central (AKA Marukai), has the acrylic musubi molds at their store. That's where I purchased mine. We are a HUGE spam loving family here. I HAVE to make spam, portuguese sausage, eggs, and gohan for my husband, at least 3 times a month. Spam stir fried with moyashi (beansprouts), and onions is quite yummy!! I love your idea of tofu musubi! Thank you for sharing!!

Another great video Cari! Happy birthday Aiko! Diamond Head Market and Grill makes musubi. Chef Kelvin Ro makes the spam musubi with brown rice too. Very ono! The tofu version is a great idea! I think I will experiment marinating in teriyaki sauce before frying.

@@Caritaira I made the teriyaki tofu musubi yesterday. Turned out ono! I marinated in teriyaki sauce over night, then fried. After browning, I threw in some teriyaki sauce into the pan and let the sauce reduce to concentrate the flavors more. Turned out great! My son and I both like it. Great flavor. I also made spam musubi and inari sushi, both of those turned out good. But the teriyaki tofu was another good alternative.

Don't eat spam much at home but like it in Hawaii, mostly in a breakfast combo w/ Portuguese Sausage, even at McDo's. Last time there we tried the musubi at the mall, don't remember the name of the spot. It's all good to me TBH. Nice b-day party btw.

Thank you, Janice! The thicker tofu was better than using a thin piece. More flavor.

Happy Birthday Aiko! I would have never thought of using tofu for musubi but why not? We use chicken and hot dogs so why not tofu? I like to prepare my form tofu in the air fryer so maybe I'll try it with the sauce on it. Props to your mom for always being so agreeable and for helping to cook all these dishes for us to learn from.

Than you, Kakelinga! I would've never thought to use tofu as well... until I saw a tofu musubi at Down To Earth and always wanted to try and make it. Using the air fryer sounds like it will be great! I want to get one one day.
