Carl Czerny (21 February 1791 - 15 July 1857) was an Austrian composer, teacher, and pianist of Czech origin.
Czerny was as a pupil of Beethoven. He was selected by Beethoven for the premiere of the latter's Piano concerto no. 1, in 1806 and, at the age of 21, in February 1812, Czerny gave the Vienna premiere of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor".
Czerny composed a very large number of pieces (more than a thousand pieces and up to Op. 861). Czerny's works include not only piano music (études, nocturnes, sonatas, opera theme arrangements and variations) but also masses and choral music, symphonies, concertos, songs, string quartets and other chamber music.
“Every middle piano student and up will know Czerny on his /her fingers ...His piano studies have been training standard fare for more than two centuries now. Between those technicalities, musicality, sensitivity, creativity are always there.
Mr. Kuerti's initiative to create the Festival and go ahead till the preparation of this splendid 3-discs version, restores to everyone a major Beethoven contemporary, the shadow of whom has condemned many to an unjust rear plane. Czerny, Hummel, Ries, to name a few, followed the master, sometimes too close, sometimes not keeping the full level. Glad to have been first to see it, first to like it, first to comment about it. Czerny image is of a composer of tedious and academic music mostly because he is just known for its studies. However, first and foremost his studies are all but tedious, yet are obviously music to practice piano; moreover he has written way more and not only for piano and his production is rich, robust, valid, generous and often music is concerned with true masterpieces. Hence pity he is so unjustifiably underrated and solely known for studies. You have uploaded a very pleasant piece written for in unusual ensemble, most probably produced on demand or for specific players. There is a lot of his teacher Beethoven's (first period of Beethoven, say this is same spirit as Settimino and same quality). But you can hear Weber too and similar masters of that fruitful period of transition between classicism and romanticism.

@@sibarit101 yes true. Nocturnes of Czerny are beautiful and their own style, innovative and peculiar pieces full of personality. Concertos are absolutely not inferior to Hummel ones and should be more known than they actually are

What a delightful and joyful piece for an unusual combination of instruments, but it works! A chance discovery and all the more pleasurable for that. As someone else has said, there are hints of Beethoven, but this is no pasticheand bears Czerny's imprint.

Carl Czerny werd voor het eerst onderwezen door zijn vader, een erkend pianovirtuoos, en was al op tienjarige leeftijd een briljant pianist, daarom werd hij een student van Ludwig van Beethoven ; bij het eerste Weense optreden van Beethovens 5e pianoconcerto op 11 februari 1812 speelde hij de solopartij. Hij bleef studeren bij Muzio Clementi en Johann Nepomuk Hummel en Antonio Salieri , maar trad relatief zelden op tijdens concerten.
