Thank you for listening and appreciating, but I think we shouldn't compare great composers to each other. In 1777, 21-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had ventured to Mannheim with his mother to develop his career. This famous musical school had a great influence on composers of the time, including Mozart.

I agree with you, my friend, Paganini is the greatest composer for violin. In fact, the violin became my favorite instrument listening to Paganini's music, one of the few composers whose recorded music I have listened to in its entirety. I listened and many times tears streamed down my face because his violin can express all human feelings. Have a beautiful day!

For several moments I thought that this was Beethoven. Completely enjoyable. And the pianist: Christopher Hinterhuber has made numerous recordings with Naxos and Kalrec, performing works by Haydn, Ferdinand Ries, Schubert, and Zemlinsky. His recording of works by Johann Nepomuk Hummel earned the Editor's Choice award from Gramophone magazine in 2008. Currently, he teaches piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and gives masterclasses in Japan, Europe, and South America.

This is lovely playing by the soloist with excellent pace, technique and feeling, and the Luxemburg orchestra really brings out many fine details of Joachim's masterful orchestration. HOWEVER, the recording is also something of an abomination as several sections of the first movement are cut out, including almost the entire orchestral exposition, a chunk of the development, part of the bridge in the recap - thankfully they didn't edit the amazing cadenza - as well as a few sections of the finale. It's disrespectful and a damned shame... if not for the butchering of Joachim's symphonic conception of the concerto, it might be my favourite take of this opus magnum (at least for the first and second movements). For excellent complete recordings of it, you can listen to Rachel Barton Pine or Christian Tetzlaff.

Grazie Sibarit!

This is a Viola Audition standard. Wolfram had a fair amount to do with Australia. I remember he was working at a National Music Camp in Australia I think it was about 1987. He was a viola hero of mine when I was studying Viola at the Victorian College of the Arts. I went to hear his concerts with the MSO and later with a group of soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic playing at the Melbourne Concert Hall. He married an Australian woman I believe. I also studied Viola with one of his students Jane Hazelwood.

All of Ries' concertos (and also the symphonies and al the other works of him) are well worth listening to. It is a great pity that they are almost never heard in concert and that most pianists of our time ignore these marvellous concertos. They would be a huge enrichment to concerto programmes. Thank you so much for posting this.
