Carl Lewis was lucky, not because of his abilities, but in the sense that many athletes never get the chance to compete in a home Olympics, but he got to compete in two.

That's his biggest fault, but otherwise he's all right. I remember when he ran for a state legislative office in New Jersey, where he and I are from, and if I had lived in his district, I likely would have voted for him, because he seems like a pretty decent guy over all.

Smith is an easy target as she was such an obvious doper. She made huge improvements in a very short time and showed up in Atlanta as big as a house. Looking back she was clumsy in boosting up so much. Then again, she was organised enough to beat the tests and then ‘win’ her events. We mustn’t forget that there are dopers who we never suspect since they take only the minimum needed to make the winning difference. All are equally guilty. Smith is anonymous these days and yet is Ireland’s most ‘successful’ Olympian. She doesn’t talk about Atlanta anymore and the Irish Olympic association keeps their head down too. A real shame that she invalidated her whole career and lost credibility as a sports person and athlete. We must try and teach kids that the moment you dope, you lose the chance to really win because you’re not really taking part any more.

Michelle Smith *never* tested positive for a banned substance. Take it out of that. Also take into account that nowadays, there isn't a professional athlete that doesn't dope.

Sorry to have to correct you but Smith never actually tested positive for any banned drug substances. What she was banned for was for tampering with a urine sample. @@Nautilus1972 Bear in mind that Evans had objected to Smith's participation because she had been entered by her country's officials after the deadline and got in two days after. As I recall, FINA said no to Smith's participation, but the International Olympic Committee overruled FINA. Who was right - FINA or the IOC? Ha, if it had been up to me, I would have tossed a coin. But a lot of people thought FINA was. That part of the story doesn't always get attention.

Lewis was a natural talent like bolt from a young age. Only ever caught taking stimulants from a cold medicine. His best performances came at 30 years old, so I doubt he took steroids. Steroids bulk you up. He was lean, he never suddenly changed body shape unlike Johnson. Plus Lewis was very health conscious vegan. Can’t see a vegan taking steroids. It’s paradoxically. Steroids don’t win you 9 Olympic Gold medals over 4 Olympics its talent. Plus steroids weaken your liver health and tendons.

@@stevenmaginnis1965 I think the IOC would deem it to be not widely practiced around the world. For something to become an Olympic event, it has to have high level of competition in many countries. Unlike American football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey has major leagues with professional athletes in other countries too. I went to see the European championships in American football and while it was entertaining, the level was simply laughable compared to even NCAA D1, let alone NFL

Must be embarrassing for the Irish that Michelle Smith is their "best " ever Olympian .Then again doesn't Ireland even have a history of doping their horses in in equestrian events ? I think they had a pretty corrupt Olympic association While we are at it , is there anyone today who thinks Carl Lewis was clean ? These Olympians from the 70s to the 90s are just so often dopers . Mind you there are still plenty around but the widespread cynicism over so many sporting performances may have some effect in reducing doping
