Rock and roll did not just "start"; rather, it evolved, as the several comments below show. I am age 81 and still listen to 1950's rock and roll and to Black blues. As Little Richard once said, "The blues had a baby, and they called it rock and roll." To get a dull marriage dance going, just ask the DJ to play "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, and then keep playin Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, et al, and plan to stay until midnight or later.

They had very different styles, but Chuck Berry's 1 4 5 style boogie, double stop leads, bends, and song writing were far more influential.
@michaelsmith96292 жыл бұрын
Two different styles, so no truly accurate comparison can be made, really. There are always too many subtle differences....and this is what makes life worth experiencing....IMHO, of course.

Someone said rock and roll started in the forties; well Big Joe Turner was rocking his rhythm and blues back in the thirties with Jimmy Johnson on the boogie woogie piano and there were a few others as well in the late thirties who’s style was what we would recognize as early rock n roll. In country music the Delmore Brothers had Rockin n roll boogie and Buddy Jones in 1939 put out a song called Rockin rollin Mama. And from Texas Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys were Rockin a big band blues sound with a country flair to it that was definitely some Rockin music. All of these cats were performing in The 1930s . The song referenced in the 1920s was by a woman and although she sounded like a black artist I believe she was white... not that that matters much. “My Man Rocks Me (With one Steady Roll) 1922 by Trixie Smith was first song with rock and roll in the title.

Man Carl Perkins was a great performer! Carl wasn't really there when rock and roll started. It quickly arose as a fad sound among urban blacks all over the country during 1948-1949 -- "Rock The Joint" Chris Powell, "Rock That Boogie" Jimmy Smith, "Rockin' All Day" Jimmy McCracklin, "Boogie At Midnight" Roy Brown, "Rock And Roll" Wild Bill Moore, etc. -- and various white artists such as Bill Haley and Carl became aware of it shortly after that. ("Hillbilly boogie," influenced by earlier boogie-woogie similar to Louis Jordan, was big as of 1948-1949, but not with lyrics about rocking and rolling or backbeat percussion.)
@colkidglen88027 жыл бұрын
There was a song with "rock and roll" in it's title in the late 20"s. Carl was there at Sun when rock n' roll started in the mid-1950's.

Sold more records than Elvis, until his car accident in ‘56-57. I read that Carl’s Blue suede shoes sales still outnumber Elvis. Not to disparage the big E, but Hounddog by Big Mama Thornton was the best.
