Carl Perkins Rockabilly Lead Guitar style was actually somewhat simpler than you might expect. Watch my video to see how you can work within the simple pentatonics to play the rockabilly blues progressions the way Carl Perkins did.
Carl was a huge influence on Brian Setzer, Danny Gatton and heck, me too! He was a contemporary of Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy and all the rockabilly greats!
Getting frustrated? Take my beginner youtube course, it's free and will save you years of practicing wrong and fill in the gaps that plague many players!

Really good analysis of his playing on most of his rockabilly tracks on SUN during the 50s. I want to add some observations though, in case you are not already familiar with his whole catalogue and phases he had gone through in life: Although Perkins was a self taught musician without the ability of properly explaining what he did (several interviews and snippets proove that), he roughly knew what he was doing, so his selection of notes wasn't canalized through his playing unconsciously at all. The more melodic fingerpickin songs in his repetoire show that, and it's easy to hear how he would adjust his playing, depending on the situation. I also came across some interesting stuff he never recorded in studio, when I started transcribing some of his stuff he had played live in 1977, 1979 (Lone Star Cafe). I sure would be amazed to hear what you think about some "highlights" I've found that just "happened". What can be said for sure is that Perkins never was a composer when it came to solos, although he was a brilliant solo guitarist, beside being a profilic and extraordinary talented writer. (I will send you a link to a concert that blew my mind and tell you the timecodes for certain parts. I do not understand why Perkins played stuff that night he was clearly able to play but often chose not to play them (or did not remember them). On that show, his playing sounds much more versatile than on other live recordings that definitely reflect some redundancy regarding the overall arrangements and his soloing.

This is a great bit of info, I always appreciate these insights because there’s so much buried material out there, I’m definitely going to look into that concert, I think I have seen clips of it! Thanks for the kind words and feel free to contribute any time. This sort of thing is the redeeming quality of the internet / social media!

Really nice, Adrian. Mercifully, this (finally) makes total sense, in theory. You have explained how to put it into practice with some specific examples. Love the RD400 t-shirt. I LOVED my RD350 back in the day!!

Boy, that’s frustrating - sometimes I respond to comments on the KZbin platform and come back here and find they never went through. Of course, what I said was - I have a little rd125 that I’ve recommissioned from a pretty sad state, that now starts first or second kick. It’s a brilliant little bike.. can’t imagine what the big ones must be like to ride.. this things great as it is at 125cc!! Thanks Richard!

Hey Richard, thank you so much! I’m just finishing up recommissioning an rd125 in the same colour scheme. I’ve done a heap of work including a full top end, fork seals, various electrical repairs, crank seal, sear recovering, carb rebuild, fitted a new headlight and made a new steering damper from some all thread! I’m so glad someone noticed the shirt 😜
