"Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring fable. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal." - Carl Sagan (excerpt from "A Pale Blue Dot")

I sometimes think of the garden of Eden of a story in a different context, like the part from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy "For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much-the wheel, New York, wars and so on-whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man-for precisely the same reasons." I think in order for this perspective to flip we need to provide a minimum standard of living to people who are unemployed. We jump through hoops doing tricks our whole lives to earn money to provide basic things like food and shelter.
