liminal6823 - Professor Sagan changed my life, too. It began with a normal Friday night trip to the movies for a group of 15 year olds in 1997, when we chose to see "Contact". That movie set off a quest for knowledge that has never diminished to this day. I'm 41 now, and still fascinated by the subjects Sagan talked about. The cosmos, physics, evolution, religion, philosophy, chemistry, SETI's mission (although I doubt we'll ever find anything proving intelligent life exists out there, I appreciate the reasons for looking and absolutely love the thoughts that come when I let my imagination follow the possibilities if we DID discover other intelligent life.) Sadly, by the time I figured out the movie "Contact" was based on the book "Contact", and the name of the author was Carl Sagan, and I went looking for info on him... he had been gone for almost a year. Since 1997, I've read every book he wrote, as well as a large number of his academic papers. I've watched the original "Cosmos" series at least 15-20× and have watched most of his lectures, thanks very much to KZbin! (Pre KZbin, even with the internet, finding these lectures was not easy.) Just wanted to say hi 👋 to a fellow admirer of Carl Sagan's eloquent brilliance and his efforts to educate the masses. As I mentioned, his words changed my life. He directly influenced a 180⁰ turn in my academic trajectory. I only wish I'd known of him sooner.

Clearly creation had to be done by a supernatural creator. A supernatural who created the natural realm of time, space, and matter, along with the natural laws that govern it, is not bound by the natural laws the supernatural creator created. @@carlsagandotcom UNDERSTANDING TIME (AND time dilation) ON BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy IS PROVEN TO BE GRAVITY (ON/IN BALANCE): The following explains why and how what is THE EARTH/ground is necessarily (AND CLEARLY) the FULL DISTANCE in/of/as SPACE (ON BALANCE). INSTANTaneity is fundamental to what is the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience. BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE is fundamental (ON BALANCE). Carefully consider what is the man (AND THE EYE ON BALANCE) that actually IS IN what is outer “space“. Carefully consider what is the man (AND what is THE EYE ON BALANCE) who IS standing on what is THE EARTH/ground. (SO, carefully consider what is BALANCED BODILY/VISUAL EXPERIENCE.) Consider what is the TRANSLUCENT blue sky ON BALANCE. Indeed, touch AND feeling BLEND; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is CLEARLY AND NECESSARILY proven to be gravity (ON/IN BALANCE); as TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual ON/IN BALANCE. Consider TIME AND time dilation ON BALANCE !! The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky ON BALANCE, AND consider what is the speed of light (c) ON BALANCE !! E=mc2 is taken directly from F=ma. I have explained why THE PLANETS (including the Moon) move away very, very, very, very slightly in relation to what is the Sun, AND I have explained the cosmological redshift. I have explained why the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution !! (Einstein never nearly understood gravity, TIME, or time dilation ON BALANCE.) THINK. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. This is proven by F=ma AND E=mc2. Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND balanced IN AND OUT of SPACE AND TIME, as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Accordingly, Einstein's equations predict that SPACE is expanding OR contracting; as Einstein's equations are NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE). Therefore, gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Accordingly, GRAVITATIONAL force/energy is proportional to (or balanced with/as) inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. This explains the cosmological redshift AND the "black holes". Great. Therefore, the ULTIMATE BASIS of SPACE AND TIME is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETISM AND GRAVITY in balance; as PERPETUAL motion is the ultimate answer to what is then TIME DILATION. INSTANTANEITY is thus FUNDAMENTAL to TIME AND SPACE. Accordingly, the relative end(s) of SPACE AND TIME are thus understood to involve gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy in balance. Balance and completeness go hand in hand. TIME dilation ultimately proves that ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity on balance, as the EYE is the size of a black hole in BALANCED RELATION to what is the EARTH; as the stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. (Consider what is the Sun on balance.) Time is (NECESSARILY AND CLEARLY) proven to be possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, as ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity ON BALANCE. Gravity is ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy ON BALANCE. This NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE. Consider what is the man (the eye) that actually IS in outer “space” ON BALANCE. AGAIN, TIME dilation ultimately proves that ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity on balance. I think I'm about the age of many of those kids sitting there (now 61). How impressive it was then of what humanity already knew, back then in 1977. Compare with what we all know now. What amazing progress, Isn't it. Now try to imagine what we will all know in another 45 years. I don't think we even know how to begin.

I have a “decent”, small, modern telescope. And there’s no way it has the magnification to be able to zoom into Venus enough to see phases. So, I always bring into doubt their assertion when historians talk about Galileo’s “first telescope”, such as Dr. Sagan does here (16:17). I do not doubt Galileo did so, I just doubt it was the “first telescope”. I imagine it took him many, MANY different builds to be able to accomplish this.

One of the tunes included in the soundtracks carried by Voyager is "Johnny Be Good" by Chuck Berry, the lyrics of which has the line "...play that Guitar just like ringing a Bell...", Imagine that at some point in time in Voyagers future travel, the craft is captured by an "Advanced Civilization", which is populated with "beings" that call themselves by a name which in their language, is, "Guitar".....

My favorite cross Sagan book was Contact. Yes it comes under the category of fiction and of course using many of his theories in the writing of said book but it was just wonderful nonetheless. As far as his series cosmos, It was the 1st truly expansive piece of work that catered to the intellect of the average American. He simply put things in terms that were Suddenly Understandable to those other than specialists in their field of astronomy including astrophysics. And on a lighter side, Carl Sagan was one of the best of Johnny Carson's regular guests. And for those of you that are too young to know my reference to Johnny Carson he was considered the ultimate late night talk host. It was the template for all the following acts like Dave Letterman Jay Leno Jimmy Kimmel, et cetera.

That is so true. Think of the time & resources wasted on this tiny planet in the 1950’s & ‘60’s by 2 countries separately trying to do exactly the same things - get into space, get humans into space, then land a man on the moon . One human effort would have been sensible, involve the best brains, & cheaper. Yes, I do know about the history of the time. I lived through it. It never made any sense.
