On September 15th, 2023, King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrated his 50th anniversary on the Swedish throne. He is the longest reigning monarch in the nation’s history. Let’s take a quick jaunt through Swedish history, from the ice age to the Viking age; the rise of monarchy, the Kingdom’s struggles to control the Baltic and find it’s place in the world. We’ll find out how a French soldier came to found the current dynasty and how interconnected Sweden is to the other Scandinavian monarchies. All leading to the 50 year reign of Carl XVI Gustaf and a view to the future reigns of Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle.

As a finn who reads and knows a lot about the Swedish monarchy, I can say there was a recent survey where it is clear the Swedish monarchy is popular; inn the survey, over 60 percent of the Swedes said they think the royal family represents the country well. Also, the King is getting more popular nowadays as he ages, and the respect for him has grown a lot since 2010, and so has his popularity :)

This was a really good video, and even as a Swede I learned some new things! I don't hold any particularly strong feelings for or against our country being a monarchy, but I do think that our current royal family does a good job of representing our country internationally, more so than a politician who will always divide opinions much more heavily. Carl XVI Gustaf is a bit awkward and absent-minded, but that kind of makes him almost endearing, but I can't wait for Victoria to be queen, she really seems like a genuine, kind, and intelligent woman.

However some facts were not fully correct. Gustav IV Adolf did not start a war with Russia 1808, but Russia (who temporarily sided with Napoleon 1807-12) attacked. And Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in a military coup 1809, but he was rather popular, so his people were not "furious". However Gustav IV Adolfs grandsons daughter Victoria was married into the Bernadotte dynasty and became mother to Gustav VI Adolf, so Carl XVI Gustaf is a descendant of Gustav IV Adolf in the 6:th generation. Our king has developed into a skilled speaker. I heard him twice in 2023, in Jönköping and Göteborg.He communicates well today. He is not like the "shy" 27 year old man he was in 1973. I like and support him a lot.

Many North Americans believe in this and hence feel grateful to God for giving them the resilience to overcome obstacles that present themselves in life. I am not sure that is overly different to European perspectives? It’s pretty integrated within Catholicism and particularly in Protestants. But of course, you may have a different perspective and that’s ok.

I really hope you can do a video on Desiree Clary Bernadotte some time. She was Jean Baptiste Bernadotte's wife, so eventually became the Queen of Sweden, but prior to marrying Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, she was engaged to Napoleon. He broke the engagement to marry Josephine.

That was a really good video. You covered all of the high points of Swedish history without leaving out any of the major details AND you kept it flowing and moving without getting too much on any one era. I would absolutely love it if you could please do a deep dive into the particular Swedish famine that started in 1867? Several of my Swedish ancestors left Sweden because of the impact of that particular famine.

It’s not that exciting. Climate, harvests gone wrong, food shortages etc were a daily thing across Europe. And is still a problem in many countries. Sweden and Finland were dirt poor developing unequal countries in the 19th century and most lived in the countryside trying to survive on a small plot of land and a couple of animals or worked hard physical jobs. Sweden is a massive country with several micro climate zones. In 1867 the infrastructure was crap. Extreme rainfall in the summer of 1866 had a severe impact on the year’s grain harvest. Potatoes and vegetables went bad on the fields, and many other basic foods could no longer be harvested. A long winter aggravated the situation and only half of the normal harvest could be generated in 1867. Thousands of people had no access to food or sanitation, and as a result, malnutrition and disease became widespread. During the three “great hunger years,” 270,000 people died. Due to the scarcity of nourishment between 1866-1868, thousands of Finns and Swedes emigrated to the United States to escape poverty. There are lots of free archives with original documents to search for info on your specific ancestors.

14:02 Gustav III was assassinated at a masked ball at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm at midnight on 16 March 1792 by a group of nobles who opposed the king's autocratic rule and his attempts to strengthen the monarchy's power at the expense of the nobility's privileges. This incident became the basis of an opera by Giuseppe Verdi in 1859 as _Un ballo in maschera_ ( _A Masked Ball_ ).

Lindsay's and Useful Chart's videos always help me, they serve as a great introduction point when I start learning a new region's history. As an American we get 10 years of American history taught to us and 2 years of global. I always find it hard to understand the history of Scandinavian monarchies as they aren't quite as linear as the UKs, which I'm most familiar with. Great video as always Lindsay, I appreciate all you do.

The part about Sigismund Vasa was a bit inaccurate. While his mother was indeed a Polish princess, and he was elected King of Poland (and Grand Duke of Lithuania, etc.) before becoming the King of Sweden, he wasn't raised in Poland. Also, his deposition was less of a case of him not tolerating his Protestant subjects and more a case of his Protestant subjects not tolerating a Catholic King (similar to James II Stuart in England).

28:00 I think it’s more relevant to note that no Swedish monarch has voluntarily abdicated in over 300 years. The only member of the Bernadotte dynasty to “abdicate” was Oscar II, when he abdicated the Norwegian throne (not exactly willing)

He didn't abdicate. Oscar II was King of Sweden and King Norway through the Union of Sweden and Norway which declined and culminated in its dissolution in 1905. In 1905, the throne of Norway was transferred to his grandnephew Prince Carl of Denmark under the regnal name Haakon VII.

On October 26, he submitted a letter to the Swedish Parliament, read aloud by the Speaker, forever renouncing the Swedish throne for himself and members of his dynasty. There was also an interregnum between Oscar’s abdication and Haakon accession. They did not occur at the same time.

If he were to have abdicated, Oscar II would have signed an instrument of abdication and his heir (then Crown Prince Gustaf) would have immediately ascended the throne. Oscar II did not sign an instrument of abdication. He renounced. He did not abdicate in favor to his heir.

My favourite Vasa ruler is definitely Queen Kristina. I know she is still controversial in Sweden to this day and it’s true that she wasn’t all that great personally or as a ruler, but she’s fascinating for better and for worse and for so many reasons, and she’s honestly pretty relatable for me in some areas. I’ve researched online and collected books (physically and digitally and in various languages) about her for five years so far (although I’ve known about her for ten) and even though I’m no professional at all I love to research and translate everything I can find and access about her, plus it’s coincidentally helped me understand 1600s Swedish almost as well as today’s Swedish and it’s not even my first language.

I wouldn’t say Kristina is controversial today. She lived many centuries ago. Interesting indeed, one of many interesting historical people. The Swedish monarchies dates back to the 10th century, there’s so many monarchs the everyday person can’t keep track. Gustav Vasa is just considered the founding king of the modern Sweden we know today but he shows up on the stage in 1520, which is yesterday really. Swedes don’t have that emotional attachment to the past or the past monarchs. It’s simply history, we have a wide range of history going back many many thousands of years and the legacy is part of Sweden today. Axel Oxenstierna is an other contemporary person who was not only important for Kristina (she couldn’t have abdicated without his assistance) he also reformed the governmental systems in Sweden, those are still the foundation of the systems in place today. Poor Descartes is an other person. But I do get that she is fascinating and appealing to many people (abroad) maybe because of the strict conformity put on the royals and gender stereotypes and roles. Try riksarkivet online, there’s surely plenty of archives and documents from Kristina herself and about her. Like letters, government papers, church records, property etc. The many archives in Sweden are insanely well preserved and accessible to anyone for free. The staff at the archives are usually very helpful and friendly.

@@AnnaKaunitz I’m not in Sweden so I have to do it all online but I go to the Riksarkivet website all the time. Some collections relevant to Kristina aren’t digitised at all or in full yet but I’ve found a lot of interesting things about her there. It took me a while to figure out all the old chancellery script and the archaic language and random spellings and Kristina’s own handwriting, but I like it and I especially like when I find originals of copies that I’ve seen in other collections there or in old books. In the 1750s and in 1760 her early biographer Johan Arckenholtz published a four part biography and compilation of all the documents he could access and a lot of those documents he consulted are actually some of the same ones I’ve seen online, some are copies of originals or copies of copies but others are original.

This is kinda bittersweet on a personal level. I’m currently trying to find info on candidates for my state’s primary elections, trying to find out who’s the most extreme so I can avoid them. My grandmother was Swedish, lived in Sweden, and an absolute sweetheart who gave amazing hugs and smelled like nice perfume. I only got to meet her once. This video is contrasting with what I’m doing rn in a weird national pride way; I’m proud to have Swedish heritage, but vastly disconnected from it, while I’m un-proud of the US right now, but much more connected to things. (For clarity, I’m GLAD to be a US citizen, but certainly not PROUD of it.)

Hi, swedish person here! While it's true that swedes and norwegians understand each others language pretty well (nowhere near perfect though), the same can't be said for swedes and danish people. It depends on where in Sweden you live, for example a person from Stockholm will have quite a hard time understanding danish than a person living closer to the danish border, like in Malmö, Skåne, where the big Öresunds bridge crosses into both countries. Swedish and norwegian is more closely related languages than swedish and danish also, hence why it's easier for most swedes to understand norwegian. However norwegian and danish grammar are more closely related to eachother than to swedish grammar, so a swede would find it more difficult to read something written in norwegian than it would be to speak with a norwegian. Other than that I loved the video. It's always interesting learning more about your own country's history. 🤗

Actually Swedish and Danish are East Scandinavian languages and Norwegian is a West Scandinavian language, it is "just" the Danish pronounciation ... and spelling ... and then it is that there is Norwegian and Norwegian, Bokmal and Nynorsk, and every dialect, and I leave it to an actual Norwegian to explain that ... a Norwegian lady living in Sweden explained it as that all Norwegians are actually bilingual. Southern Swedes (Skåne) have a problem with Northern Norwegians and Stockholmian Swedes, they watch a lot of Danish TV, Swedes along the Norwegian border are used to Norwegian, and also a lot of people up North are Sapmi, and above the Polar Circle many are Finnish speakers or speak Meänkieli, and at least understand Finnish, often a sort of old Northern variant.

Swedish is slightly closer to Danish than Norwegian originally, even though that might be hard to believe today considering how the pronounciation of Danish is different from the other two Scandinavian languages.

As another Swedish person who grew up close to Malmö and could see to København. Yes to most of it. Thanks to Danish televison I read and write Danish effortless due to Danish subtitles. It's a bit harder to read Norwegian no matter what version but it still feels closer to Danish than Swedish. When it comes to spoken language it's the other way around for me as well despite being from near Malmö. It's a common misunderstanding that tells me you are not from Skåne. It's logical to assume that people from Malmö and København understand each other but that is just not true. Denmark as well as Sweden have local dialects and Malmö itself used to have several different dialects which meant you could immediately hear from what part of the city someone was. It's often easier for Danes to understand other dialects from further away and vice versa and I have many neighbours from Denmark. Around 10000 houses in southern Sweden are owned by Danes so they are well on their way to buy back what they lost in 1658. Some people don't like it because it means we can't afford to buy our own houses but that's a completely different story that will be included in a future history video. The video is also wrong about the Great Nordic war, why Norway became Swedish and Vikings in a number of ways. Then again, most Swedes nowadays have no idea either.

I thought that Sweden king/queen have no political power. His tasks are solely symbolic and representative. The king represents and promotes Sweden in many ways. He makes state visits, for example, on which he meets the leaders of other countries.

Something interesting to add is that while the current living Swedish royal family may be Bernadottes they can still trace their blood lines to the Vasa dynasty Three of the women that’s married into the Bernadotte family(Sibylla, Margaret and Jósephine) were all descendants of Gustav Vasa’s daughter and granddaughter (both named Katarina) And(correct me if I’m wrong) because of their ties to Gustav Vasa they’re also descendants of both Sverker(1100) and Stenkil(1030)

As an Australian whos fellow Australian is now Princess Mary and about to become the new Queen with her husband Frederick becoming King of Denmark and Australia being part of the Commonwealth and so we have just had the Coronation of King Charles after a lifetime of Queen Elizabeth.... the royal families are very interesting to me. My great great grandparents came from Sweden, so i have also become very interested in the Swedish royal family and appreciate this post immensely....thank you for all your research and a well presented post. 😊👍

Hey, I found out this not so long ago that I am a descendand of Jean Baptiste Bernadotte. Most likley through a bit of a one night stand. But when I carried out a family tree research It came down to Bernadotte in the 1800s. Now I do also realise that It may not be him, maybe another descendant or something like that but I still have a bit of fun thinking I might have Royal Blood :). Plus I do have from both known family and DNA tests French Blood so that just streanghtens it

I don't like the King for objecting to the line of succession changing to the eldest child of the King instead of the son. That was crappy of him to do Victoria. I like Victoria a lot.

When Sweden changed the rule of succession from agnatic primogeniture to absolute primogeniture, the change was retroactive resulting in the transfer of heir apparent from Carl Philip who was seven months old to Victoria. 7:33 Actually this is just one of the theories for the origin of the three crowns crest. 15:02 Technically Karl XIII wasn't childless. It's just that since his son was born out of wedlock by his mistress, he wasn't a legitimate heir. In consideration of the length of history being covered here (and how messy it truly is, especially the early parts), these are obviously pretty minor errors.
