Both methods are well displayed however the first method that you have presented is the best way as you can recall at 10:38 you was correct but went into second thoughts thinking you calculated it wrong... Personally adding on from your great example i would keep it nice and simple... Know your Binary and Subtract in the general form hence: 8 4 2 1 = Binary Values Representing Columns 1 1 0 1 = 13 - 1 1 0 0 = 12 -------------- = 13 - 12 = 1 0 0 0 1 = 1 Your videos are great, thank you for sharing.

I learned with 2's compliment. When you have to subtract a bigger number from a smaller number, like 5-7, but in the binary system, 2's compliment seems to be the easiest method. For instance, to solve 101-111 (which is still 5-7) you have to swap the 1's to 0's and the 0's to 1's in the last number. So the 111 becomes 000, and then add one, so its 001. Then you add the number you just got to the number you started with, so 101+001 = 110. Okay, first of all, that's 6, not -2, so you know you're not done. Second, since the furthest digit to the left is a one, and because it has the same number of digits as the numbers you added (101 has three, 001 has three, 110 has three) you add a 0 to the left, so now you have 0 110. That zero is used as a test to see if you have a positive or negative number. 0 means negative. 1 means positive. The number 0 110 is negative. So you have to switch the digits again to make it 001 (drop that zero you added, it wasn't a number, it was a test) and add 1 again. So, 110 switches to 001, and then 001+1=010. That's two. Binary doesn't have the (-) symbol, only 1's and 0's, so that test is the only proof that its negative; without the test, that's just a normal positive 2. This whole process has to be used every time you subtract a bigger bologna from a smaller bologna, or in normal subtraction, and I favor it to the borrowing method. This is the way computers do math. They don't subtract, they only add. I hope this helps someone understand this concept, I'm not a teacher, so, sorry if this is confusing. There are other ways, like a combination of the carry method and 2's compliment. Congratulations if you read all this, you're a trooper.

I am no expert on this, but simply a student on a technological education. As far as I know, binary numbers can't be negative numbers. I see what you mean, and we had an assignment where our binary number ended up becoming negative. To handle this problem, we changed the value of the bit in the front (working with 8-bit) to -128. That changed the avaible values from 0-255 to -128-127. That is how we solved the problem, but the pc is not able to do that because it believe the eigth-bit to be 256.

It is a simple negation, a two step process. Let's us a signed byte (8 bits, -128 to 127) as an example. Let's use 6 which would be 0000 0110 (all 8 bits). First, simply exchange each 0 for a 1 or if it was a 1 make it a 0. So far, we would have 1111 1001. Then add 1 and it becomes 1111 1010, which is -6 if you add up all the bit values (-128 + 64 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 0 + 2 + 0). This is the same exact method whether going from positive to negative or negative to positive. You ALWAYS add 1 after flipping the values.
