One thing to keep track of with Killua, which you did notice, is that he sees everyone as either stronger or weaker than him - he only fights when he is sure he can win, and if he can't win he won't fight, which is (partly) why he insta backed down against illumi

An important thing to keep in mind going forward, that starts early on in the Hunter Exam and persists throughout the show, Killua treats killing as sort of the ‘old default solution’ and not something he actually wants to do. That’s part of why Illumi’s manipulation of him here is so cruel, and why Killua’s horrified of him. If you look at the language in the airship right before you first see Killua’s nails he doesn’t kill until he gets really mad, he’s reluctant to use lethal force when they’re leaving trick tower, and he only threatens the triplets when it’d certainly be faster to kill them. He doesn’t even kill the frog to escape its belly, even though he could. The grins and evil smirks are like a side effect of his ‘kill switch;’ it’s a mode he was conditioned to adopt momentarily in order to assassinate people. Which is why he turns into a happy kid again immediately afterwards. Ostensibly Killua’s a tiny badass, but in actuality when you think of what was done to him in his childhood to make him that way, and how desperately he wants to leave that life and be Gon’s friend, you see he’s also a very vulnerable and sweet little boy. Illumi doesn’t actually KNOW Killua at all; he just knows what he wants Killua to be. That’s why so many of us love Killua dearly and want to protect him at all costs. ❤️

Its really great how episode 20 talks about conflict of nature vs nurture. Illumi knows very well but not completely. He speaks with such confidence about it because that is he how was raised and presumed most of family has been. It can be very hard to change who you are if you have raised a certain way for most of your life. Which makes Killua so unique that he has this side of him that is not like his brother or family. Yet it is very possible he could turn and become like them if they continue to groom him which is why he ran away. It makes for a complex character going against their instincts to change who they are and who they might want to be.

So this tournament was based on your potential as a hunter. Killiua that whole episode questioned gons potential during his fight with hanzo. Killua could not understand why gon had so much potential. Well hunters are people who are sent into very dangerous situations that may end with the person losing your life. It takes incredible determination to face certain death and keep fighting. Gon has demonstrated this time and time again. First time is when he saved the sailor by jumping off the ship. The second is the question the old lady gave him where constantly tried to find a solution to an almost unanswerable question. As we watch you see he's always trying to find another way that would lead to the best result. Killua on the other hand was always trained as an assassin. Because of his training he doesn't find any other solution besides kill my opponent. It wasn't until illumi showed himself he started questioning it. Even then he succumbed to illumis will giving in where gon wouldn't have and netero saw this first hand with the game they played. The writing in this show is another lvl. Because killua is stronger then gon he is a great fighter but that's isn't what's most important for being a hunter which i love.

This is obviously taught by his family, thought wanting a challenge and actively going for one, could be him trying out new things and diverging from his assassin ways and lifestyle.

@@jacky79322 actually, if you think about it, when Netero questioned everyone before deciding how to sort the tournament out he asked all of them who they didn't want to fight and he actually made sure not to put anyone against those they told him they didn't want to fight...BUT KILLUA. Killua told him that he didn't want to fight Pokkle because it wouldn't have been fun for him, and yet his first fight was against him (and Pokkle was the one who most likely would have ended up against him since both gon and Hanzo were stronger than pokkle), at the same time Illumi told Netero that he had his eyes upon Killua. So Netero did it on purpose to satisfy his curiosity about Illumi connection with Killua since they never interacted during the exam. Also no, Killua doesn't back off from a fight, he does it only when he can't properly guess his enemy strenght and be quite sure to win, since he is used to consider always the worst possible scenario which is, him in the worst shape and the opponent in its best shape. If he cannot determine that he has a fair chance to win in that situation, he backs off.

I believe the reason why gon doesn't want to give up because He wants to pass the exam like his father as a 12 years old since he wants to follow his father's footsteps that's why in his dream like his following father but since he technically lost/not strong enough to defeat hanzo that he feels his weak and his father won't acknowledge him and always wants the validation from his father because i believe that gon thinks/feels that his father leave him because he's weak that he's not worthy to join on his father's dream or something and also finding his father will make gon feel that his father will acknowledge him as a son and also feel closure and feel better on why his father left him

I love Illumi, he is very interesting to me, and interesting the way Illumi and Killua are treated by the characters and fandom, when Illumi is only the successful result of the training and parenting Killua was under, that’s probably why I feel some sympathy for Illumi, as the oldest son, he was the test child, and was alone through most of his horrible childhood. But anyway! That’s just my introspections on his character, I find him very interesting, just like I do Hisoka.

Leorio, Hanzo is doing nothing wrong and he is giving Gon ever chance to surrender but Gon is refusing. What Gon said did not make any sense he had other matches so given up will not make him not see his father. Gon a fixed fight is wrong and you should except the win. With a Hunters license a Hunter can kill without the fear of prosecution.
