The power up Gon gained was effectively a fast pass to his future potential as a nen user. He sacrificed his future in order to get there faster. That's why his power up was so great, to the point he was as powerful as the king. @WolforNuva6 ай бұрын
@@TudorX99 The Nen user also needs the time to make the pact, Pitou only gave Gon that time because she was so cautious of him despite the power difference. If a Nen user is in a fight and they're at the point where they know they're going to die and give up on living, they're probably not going to have the time to make it or make use of it. They also need to think of the idea, sacrificing your future to ensure your enemy gets crushed isn't a common idea. Also most people do not have that single minded desire to crush their opponent, in most cases people want to win a fight to live, or at least value their life over victory. Even in dire situations there's always the hope of turning things around or finding an escape, so you need to have that will to destroy your opponent without consideration for your own future.

I feel like this was Togashi's answer to the standard Super Saiyan-esque power up that so many Shonen MCs get in their time of need, but completely flipped on its head. That's what makes me feel that Gon is essentially supposed to be the true horror of Shonen protagonists: a tunnel-visioned youth whose unwavering innocence, childishness, and selective forgiveness really is just horrifying when put under the right lense. Gon really is just a horrifying yet more understandable take on Kid Goku. Contrary to popular belief he is NOT a psychopath, because he is capable of empathy. But he doesn't have a solid system of morality and duty guiding him, which is probably due to the lack of a father figure. The same reason also explains his lack of self esteem and his harsh attitude towards himself when he fails. His selfish behavior is never coming out of a place of malice, but always the result of his constant need to prove himself. As an abandoned child he is desperately trying to justify his existence and worth.

Idk about these comments about Gon losing his humanity. To me hes always seemed like he actually was brought down to reality and reacted incredibly human. This is a what? 12 11 year old kid, I forget his age, thrust into an adult world and guess what? He doesnt handle it very well. He pushes away Killua in his frustration, threatens someone he doesnt know because he doesn't understand what's going on so he lashes out again, and at the end gambles it all away for a little revenge if that isn't the most human thing to do idk what is. I thought the point of the arc was to show the 2 sides of humanity with Gon being the emotional more illogical side and Killua the more logical while not emotionless side. So to say Gon lost his humanity kind of defeats the purpose for me, even though his decisions are horrible and sometimes impulsive these are still very human reactions. Anyways great reaction

I ALWAYS cry at 130-131 and 134, 135, and 136. I cried this time around too. Gon sacrificed his unparallel future potential and all his talent for this one chance at revenge. This is the motiff of this whole arc. Human vs Monster, and while we saw Meruem's rise to light, we saw Gon's descent into darkness. The thing is... these things about Gon have always been there, but you don't pay much attention to them. Gon's moral compass is screwed, it all depends on whether he considers you a friend or not, it's not tied to logic which makes him terrifying. There is a reason why Hisoka felt a sense of kinship with Gon, and in fact, 131 vs is it episode 30 or 31? but Hisoka says similar words. Hisoka tells Kastro "Here, you can take it." when Kastro threatens to take it, and Hisoka ends up losing his right arm and also uses it (albeit his other arm) to attack Kastro, in a way, you could say Gon took that from him. Gon has been called "a monster" by several characters in HxH but when you see it you don't take it seriously, you say "yeah, he's super strong" even though Gon's "wins" come with severe loss. Gon acts like a real child, and many people didn't like him because of it, because he seemed "simplistic", he isn't written badly, he's wrriten like a 12 yo who's always had his way and has not experienced loss. Idk, at this point I'm rambling, but this is probably the best arc in any shounen animanga I've seen/read. It makes sense why Gege Akutami is obsessed with HxH, why so many mangakas LOVE Togashi and his works. He's a fantastic writer. Oh! Before I forget, you've probably noticed already, but decisive HxH fights when it comes to the MCs are NEVER a fight, they're always an execution.

What I love a lot about this episode is that it really depicts the fact that gon is in fact still a 12yr old child, he was in complete and utter denial about kite’s death, had a mental breakdown with the blame, and then threw his life away without a second thought. It’s a call back to what killua said that there’s a difference between risking ur life, and throwing it away, kurapika risks his life while gon does the opposite. Him losing his humanity is a call back to zeplies appraisal that he doesn’t care about right and wrong which is why he was willing to kill komugi for his own gain. It’s also why people suspect that if he wasn’t already friends with kurapika that he would’ve accepted the phantom troupes invitation if he found them interesting enough, hell his best friend was an assassin and killed numerous people and he didn’t bat an eye. That’s y I love gons character in this show

I'm gonna answer some of the question about this one-of-a-kind episode for you guys and for those who don't know yet. The thing that happened to Gon is called "VOW and LIMITATIONS". He basically put a restriction(vow) on himself/Nen abilities so that it became that strong and the limitation/s is that he can/will only use it against Pitou. What Gon did was basically the same with Kurapika with one minor difference. It's like Gon and Kurapika both wrote a cheque to "Nen" and basically said "give me power and I'll pay you for it", but the difference is that Kurapika put down a price, which is his death, Gon on the other hand gave a blank one(in this case, it's his powers and abilities plus his life force) and said "take whatever you want just me me power". Gon's body matured/aged like that because the incoming power is so strong that his teen body wouldn't have been able to handle it so the Nen basically aged it for him so hand he can house all of that power. And yes, what happened with Pitou is called "Nen after Death". Pitou's dedication and loyalty to the king is so great that Nen turned Pitou into a puppet with the goal to kill Gon. And no, even if Gon survived that explosion, he won't be able to use that power against Meruem because his "limitation" is that he will kill Pitou and Pitou only. I'm not exactly sure what would happen but I'm sure Gon lost all of his powers and abilities(don't know if this is spoiler since its gonna be shown next episode I believed). And this wasn't really implied but when PItou said that "his powers is now equal to the King", Pitou is talking about pre-Rose(bomb) Meruem since Pitou don't know about the King dying and then absorbing/combining with the other two royal guards that made him more powerful than before and even if Gon would be able to use his powers against Meruem, it would be equal at best IMO since Meruem is still evolving and Gon is basically is at his max. The power that Gon received is all of his potential and his peak if he trained constantly for a long time. This is long but I hope it helps. Good reaction. CHEERS!!!

My favorite part about the situation with Gon is this is exactly what happens when you have the anime trope of you can get great power for great sacrifice....and the main character is 12-14. A lot of shonen playing out in reality would end up being nightmares just because of the reality of child psychology and the fact they get BIG emotions from traumatic events they're not ready for and have never even felt before. Its why I always enjoyed how Gon is both a great example of the headstrong shonen protagonist and also an amazing deconstruction of it too. This is what happens when you mix the shortsightedness of an insanely hardheaded and emotional child with a system that basically incentivizes being as singleminded as possible.

In a way, all the peak moments through the arc are made like that because of all the build up during the slow episodes. Gon/Pitou & Netero/Meruem was as effective as it was because we’ve seen both sides of the conflict every step of the way from the start. They wouldn’t have had the same effect if the arc was just a battle gauntlet. It’s like Togashi took what he did in York New and stepped it up to a bigger scale. Peak anime ngl

Yeah, I hope they see this comment.

People seriously underestimate how important all those episodes were, where all kinds of tidbits of information were scattered and hidden in dialogue and actions of the characters. It’s not a pacing issue, the issue is most people not being emotionally intelligent enough.
@friedhotwings6 ай бұрын
@@dididyo2253 agreed. Same goes for when Gon’s character gets boiled down to “he turned into a monster.”
@knightcommander56946 ай бұрын
@@dididyo2253it is pacing issue but it’s not Togashi fault but anime creators. Like you can see how they dragged ep 130 with Gon crying to finish on certain point. Sacrifice the quality of one episode to make other a perfection. Same with Netero vs Meruem. Ep 125 was slow and had recap of their conversation pre battle for the third time. And that’s how they did 50% of the arc. As manga reader I am not fully satisfied with adaptation. It shouldn’t be 61 ep but more like 50

Critics don't claim that CA should be a "battle gauntlet". Just that some scenes are stretched way too long or placed in bad spots that disrupts the momentum.
@baseball_tomorrow-sv9tk7 ай бұрын
Carlie was spot on when she compared Netero vs Meruem to Gon vs Pitou. She noted the missing limbs and the explosion at the end. But there's also the skull-like imagery that Netero and Gon share. A skull appears behind Netero before he unleashes the bomb, and Gon's face resembles a skull when he's transforming and he yells "Pitou!".

Gon transforming into an adult as he makes a brutal decision based on an extremist childlike point of view is still one of the best examples of irony I’ve ever seen in Shonen.

the hero become a demon and kill brutally a cute cat girl the iconic and untouchable combinaison in anime. all that without meet the antagonist of the arc... HxH IS A MASTERPIECE !

Like many other people here have said, I've been waiting so long to see this episode happen. This series is so amazing, from start to finish, but this is truly the peak episode. Still quite a bit left to go!

The after death part was mentioned by Sphinx at the end of the York New arc, that nen enforced by powerful emotion persists after death as a curse (the reason they couldn't kill Kurapika)

You nailed it early on in the show about how the limiters placed would allow for stronger power being pulled out being a cool addition to the powers. I know many of us waiting on this episode were thinking of how you would react. Really is a cool idea behind the power though that allows just a ridiculous amount of power at a huge cost. It is like a Kiss/curse, with the more powerful of a power, the equal curse is needed without limits, but it needs the will power to even put that condition in place. Can't just half-heartedly create a powerful one though.

The moment Pitou stood up despite being smashed to pieces by Gon: this is her post-mortem nen. Basically a restriction she put onto her own Nen and that assured that she will still be able to fight when she is dead. Ofc that doesn’t work for long but being only able to activate when you are dead is already a big limitation and therefore powerful enough to make it happen. In the manga we see more cases of post-mortal nen later on

This was one of the episodes I couldn't wait for you guys to see. I had mentioned about Gon's character development in a previous reaction, and this episode I think reveals a lot about Gon.
Gon couldn't care less about the king, so I don't think he was thinking about him when he transformed. He was entirely focused on Pitou. Anyway, one of the best anime episodes ever. Great reaction!

Gon is an example of one of the few times we see a goody goody shounen MC truly lose themselves. Usually, there's always someone or something to bring a shounen MC back to their senses before they go too far. Gon is one of the goated shounen MCs for me because the writer went to a place other shounens won't.
