vinland saga was written first, isayama's fav character is thorfinn :) the two authors had an interview together also i like your askeladd theories and diff opinions, can't wait till you see the answer to wether askeladd is a slave or not :)

considering how vinland saga is a dialogue-heavy show, i'm worried the show might lose some of its subtleties because of the liberties in translations that netflix takes. i'd recommend amazon prime subs since they're the official ones. for example the phrasing in the official subs especially for the slave line goes "it's terrible, the man who's a slave to money holds a whip, and pretends to be the master of the slave he bought with his money, he just doesn't realize it himself, everyone is a slave to something", which sounds much more better than the one netflix went with. hopefully the sub change will kick in by the next episode or two

Netflix subs are terrible. I've seen some lines that were translated as the opposite of what the characters were saying

I genuinely think the Amazon Prime subs are even better than the crunchyroll ones, and definitely better than Netflix. I hope one of their mods reads this and recommends them to switch to prime!

Also Askeladd doesn't say to Bjorn to help Thorfinn up. He says to fix his shoulder. Askellad didn't break his arm, but he did dislocate it, that's the snap we hear.

Just one thing, AOT was probably inspired by Vinland Saga. Aot manga started in 2009, while Vinland in 2005

10:27 AoT is like this* 👀 Vinland Saga was written first and it's one of Isayama's favorite manga. Also, Amazon Prime has better subtitles, Netflix subs are just... Bad. In general, Netflix's subtitles for anime are bad.

Thorfinn still has so much to learn and it's a joy to watch him grow. Askeladd on the other hand seems to be fighting for something else entirely. As you've said, he orders the raids but he isn't raiding, he orders to kill but he isn't killing (at least from what we can tell). I appreciate how much even side characters can add to the story, as with the slave girl. She can clearly see Thorfinn is not so different from her yet he denies it, only taking things at face value. At least he remembered some important teachings his father left him with.

the way vinland saga executes its themes is storytelling at it's finest. thorfinn despite being as strong, if not stronger than askeladd, he is easy to read and prone to anger so askeladd always comes out on top through trickery and askeladd seems really convinced that thorfinn is not going to try to kill him outside the duel because as askeladd mentions "he's a slave to pride and his own past" a comment that was immediately validated in the next scene when thorfinn gets really frustrated at hordaland mistaking him for a slave. the pride he carries of avenging his father, real warrior and all that. really enjoying your post ep discussions and glad you guys are paying attention to askeladd's characterization and even more so to thor's lessons because some people dismiss it untill season 2. can't wait more!!

Not sure if anyone has already said it, but all their names are pronounced with a T sound and not a TH sound. "Thors" pronounced as "Tors," "Thorfinn" as "Torfinn," etc. Same with Askeladd. His name is supposed to be pronounced the same as you hear it in the show. "Ash-eh-ladd".
