Clarification regarding the old lady "Mistress" -- the male is a "Master", the female is a "Mistress". In modern times, we use 'mistress' as a name for a extra-marital lover / side-chick / etc., but here it's just her title as the wife of the Master of the farm.

Since Arnheid is a slave, you can't really say she's in a relationship with Ketil. She has no choice but to obey. Same with the mistress slapping her, she doesn't really need a reason to do it.

Which to an extent, especially by today's morals, would be true due to the boy's age. But basically Pater is still being kind here, he's basically giving the family a way to survive without stealing. They'll not be slaves, they'll be hired, meaning they get paid enough to buy food and such. He also know that it wouldn't go down with Thorgil to let them off the hook fully so he suggests a, by comparison, mild punishment still.

Lentil is crying to Arnheid here because he didn’t want to hurt the children. But he is the master of this whole thing, the 2nd most important man (after his own father) and if he would have had a backbone he definitely could say „My farm, my rules“ and not beat the children. This is the first very clear sign we see about Ketil not knowing how to deal with difficult social situations despite having all the power to do the right thing (in accordance with his own moral standard).

I think that all this difference between the farm owner's children creates a direct perspective of a theme that had already been treated since the beginning of the work. Fatherhood, and how fathers influence children, as well as how children do or do not learn the lessons of their parents.

I'm loving your reactions to Vinland saga, one of my favourite shows. Just a clarification, there was a short 4 min ova from mappa named ep 6.5 it's set before this ep and really adds to thorfinn's mental struggles. So you should watch it before watching the next ep.

Ketil really is a despicable coward, but for all the opposite reasons that he thinks. He's disgusted by Thorgil's senseless violence and cruelty, and thinks it's because he's too weak. But in reality if he had any backbone, he would have the courage to put a stop to it as the person in charge of the farm. And on top of all that, he's using Arnheid for his own gratification to try to soothe his self-loathing as if they have any kind of equal relationship when he's literally keeping her as property. He has some of the instincts of a kind person, but his refusal to take responsibility makes him almost more hateable than some of the outright villains for me

lol you're saying as if most of the characters in this show are morally better than him, thorfinn, thorkell, askeladd, thorgil have done much more heinous acts than what ketil did, like killing innocents, women and children, its just that ketil is well written than we don't like him as a person later in the show.

I think we confused the name with Thorgrim from Season 1. Ive obviously seen the name Thorgil thrown around somewhere and confused it with the dude from Season 1. One of the brothers that Askelaad let go towards the end of the season. I believe his name was Thorgrim

There is literally nothing honorable or compassionate about Ketil’s character. There’s no such thing as a good or compassionate slave owner. You can’t participate in the sale and ownership of human beings and still be a good person. Especially when he is forcing a female slave to be his bedmate under the guise of caring for her. They’re not in a relationship. She literally CAN’T say no this man because he owns her. Ketil is also such a coward that when he gets the opportunity to do the honorable thing by protecting those children, he folds. Enacting the violence himself isn’t any better either when he knew from the beginning that it was an unjust punishment considering their circumstances. Ketil all around is just a trash human being.

Mind you if they didn’t receive help from Ketil’s father, they wouldn’t have been to get as far as they’ve gotten and Ketil knew that before ever purchasing these slaves. And at the end all of their hard work would only benefit Ketil. So again best thing for them how?

​​@@shancarr47 As bad as it sounds, Einar and Thorfinn could have been sold to people that are way worse than him. Back then, it was sadly very common to own slaves. Ketil isn't perfect, actually he's quite flawed, but our heroes got off lucky. I just think many people retroactively hate Ketil's guts now due to a later episode (which I also do, don't get me wrong). We also have to consider how many Norse people perceive kindness as a weakness which is why Ketil as a leader has to pretend to be a strong man in the eyes of his men. It was a different time period.

We’ve heard Carlie and Ange say over and over again that he’s such a good guy for treating his slaves so “well” All I’m doing is pointing out that the fact that their statement is inaccurate. Sure there’s even more confirmation that he’s shitty person later on but my point is even from his introduction he’s not a good person.

The man is a coward who gains a lot of confidence (to fight the king) after beating a powerless women who can't fight back don't get me wrong, but still he was introduced as a reasonable slave owner and stayed a reasonable slave owner till the end.
