Narrators in any anime have always been so great for me. It's like listening to a good story teller rather than reading the story yourself. They make the story 10 times better. A narrator imo has a similar impact and heighten the overall enjoyment.

I agree with Ange's criticisms. I still prefer CA because those peaks were so peak to me, but I understand why Yorknew's pacing, consistency, variety of characters, etc. are more appealing to some. I think madhouse could have done a better job adapting the manga during CA and cutting back on some things like the narration.

I too prefer the Yornew arc, but I will say that the Chimera arc reaches some higher heights and probable has better writing, it's just so unconventional and long that it feels like an emotional beating tbh. I've rewatched the show 3/4 times and it's always hard to even start this arc because I know what's coming and how heavy it is. Let me add tho that it is totally worth rewatching, it is honestly incredible the amount of details it has.

I remember when you guys said how Gon and Kite’s meeting was a bit off and that Gon didn’t recognise him at first and only knew him for a short amount of time but if you think about it Gon holds a lot of dear people towards him and I have a theory: the reason why I think Gon went completely ballistic over Kite was probably because he’s the reason he took the Hunter Exam, and if he didn’t take the Hunter Exam he wouldn’t of found all those people dear to him like Killua, Kurapika, Leorio etc so maybe he’s grateful for Kite for to have stumbled into his life and showed him a new path and met new people who are now his friends (I hope this makes sense) Edit: Ging stands for: Get. I think a lot of people who criticize Gon for going ballistic about Kite also tend to disregard how utterly absure a child's moral compas is, Gon is like, 12, and Kite is the first time in his life that Gon has someone he cares about even get seriously hurt, much less actually die(not really ofc but Gon dosen't know that). In the Hunter Exam Leorio and Kurapika were in danger, yeah, but they didn't actually get injurred, Killua had no problems in Heaven's arena. Gon and Killua were only ever in Danger together in Yorknew. Killua was only seriously injurred in Greed Island by Gon punching the dodgeball. Gon has never previously been faces with anything that was both strong and malicious enough to kill someone he loves. I'm reasonably sure if it had been Killua that had been killed by Pitou instead Gon would have much the same reaction, though possibly learn to channel his anger better with guidence from Kite.

Additionally, the initial part of the Chimera Ant arc (that is considered the worst paced part) was way faster in the manga, all of the exposition is shorter and the anime added more scenes (like the entirety of Kurt and Reina's backstory. In the manga we only see them immediately before being killed).

For example netero vs pitou if just animated you'll asume that he just slapped them away but in fact you need the explanation that it was happening in less than 0.1 second and every piece of information works later vs meruem

the chimera ant arc is one of those pieces of media that you just cant appreciate it enough from the first watch. Speaking from firsthand experience, i think the rewatch value for this arc is incredibly fruitful. when it was dropping weekly it was regarded as one of the most lackluster arcs of hxh, widely hated by many fans for its slow pacing and narration, myself inclused. However, recently after rewatching it on my own and watching it alongside you guys and other reactors, i realized how much i was missing out, whether it be the subtle foreshadowing, the superb writing of togashi or the underlying parallels, i caught onto those little things bit by bit after carefully analysing the dialogue and the narration, i was truly astonished by the hidden greatness of this arc, it instantly became my favourite arc of all time thanks to the truly worthwhile rewatches.

Interesting because my first watch I liked the Chimera ant arc and then on second watch, I despised it. The narrator was the main character of the arc. "Gon punched Pitou and Pitou was hurt by Gons punch which Gon threw with his right arm which was bunched up like a rock because that's how you punch and that's interesting because his power is themed after rocks" "Killua frowned because he was sad, and feeling emotional because of the sad things happening" The pacing and exposition dumps ruined an otherwise amazing arc.

I think they were good without being amazing. The Kings-guards were the standouts for me along with Mereum. A lot of the characters didn’t have the presence of a Hisoka or the Phantom Troupe etc. For me at least. They definitely weren’t bad though!

Hard to shine when you’re standing next to the incredible stories Gon, Killua, Meruem/Komugi, and Pitou had this arc.

I think I speak for most people when I say HxH is a top 5 anime of all time and the Cimera Ant arc is one of the best 3 of all time. The development of Gon to the extent that he exceeds his own limits and hurts and kills and of Meruem becoming more and more human is absolutely peak. The emotions that you have for the characters, that sympathize with Gon's hatred of Pitou up to episode 131, are unbelievable. That's exactly what peak anime is and that's also the difference between a peak anime like HxH and (good anime like Solo Levelimg or Demon Slayer which are also nice to watch but are nothing compared to HxH, OP, Naruto ect)

For me its easily number one and i watch Anime for ages. It does so much new and better compared to other Shows. I cant realy understand how anyone could put other Shonen over HxH beside being a childhood favorite show or if you realy just prefer light stuff with nonstop action. And when i compare it to other shows, they have some disguating amounts of filler episodes its not even funny. HxH dosent have any of it. But i would say the show could be better if it was 140 insted of 146 Episodes, but thats realy a minor critic. Because i cant realy name specific Episodes that are a complete waste. I agree with you on everything about the criticism of this arc. At worst, it suffers from pacing issues and some ass pulls throughout; at best, it's a messy masterpiece. The narrator made the beginning of the invasion incredible. However, the overexplaining dragged a lot, even on rewatch. Killua's breakdown in front of Palm was ruined bc of him. All that being said, HxH is my fav shounen. It was unpredictable and often chose to explore unconventional routes. That, for me, is something significant bc anime in general tends to excessively repeat the same themes and tropes.

To get an idea of how long the chimera ant arc is. In the manga, it's around 120 chapters. Everything before it: The hunter exam, getting killua back, heavens arena, Yorknew and everything that happened on greed Island; just short of 200 chapters

i my self love Ging , and i think he is a much better father than people give him credit . and that is for some reasons : 1. ignoring the circumstances surrounding the absence of Gon's mother . by the time Ging had him , he was one of the strongest nen users . he must have had a lot of enemies and responsibilities . staying away from him from the beginning was probably the only way to keep him safe and give him a good chance at a normal life, at least until he was old enough to want something else . 2. i think the story shows that Ging was very independent and that his thoughts and decisions were very much his own , and that he valued that very much and wanted his son to have the same independence , but he realized that if he stayed with him , the shadow that he would cast on Gon would be too great that it would shape his expectations of himself too strongly ( even with him away , and gon knowing almost nothing about him ; it still did ). 3. i think Ging knew that Gon as a young child needed a mother figure much more than a father figure .and that Mito who lived on a small island where gon is one of two children ( so every one would treat him like family ) was better for him . i think he also knew himself and that he is not capable of raising Gon on his own even if he wanted. 4. even thou Ging was physically absent , he kept tabs on his son whom he knew was going to be like him , and he made preparations to give him drive and help him become strong enough for the life he would choose (he literally made Greed Island for him ). 5. it is obvious that Ging just like Gon has a very strange outlook on life , and unlike Gon he finds it hard to express his feelings frankly . this combination leads him to express his feelings indirectly or avoid that entirely .which makes him look uncaring . but if we know something about him , it is that he does care, especially about people close to him . and we see that clearly in Mito's backstory . i think all of these reasons and maybe more combined , some more than others . made him make the decision to stay away from his son. for that and more i think he is a great character and a better (than seems) father because even if he was wrong in his choices i think he made them for his son because he thought they were the wright choices. plus, by the end of the show he gives one of the best one-liners in anime and manga.

"Why did Kite come back?" is a question that's been thrown around for the past decade. Though from a writing standpoint, it kind of undermines everything Gon went through during the Chimera Ant Arc in order to save Kite and thus brings the arc as whole down for me compared to Yorknew City, it's mentioned later by Ging that Kite's Crazy Slots has one special number which allows his soul to keep existing even after the death of his physical body. The number he last rolled while fighting Pitou was the number 3, so I assume that's the number with this power. My personal theory is that No. 3 has to do something with the World Tree, which deals with the passage of souls. Why does such a broken power like that exist tho? Well, we start being introduced to demigod level powers from the end of the Chimera Ant arc, such as with Post-Rose Meruem. Alluka/Nanika pretty much bypasses the limitations of Aura/Nen. This is because thematically, the world starts to expand from here out into the Dark Continent. It's a metaphor which states that the rules and boundaries we have been secluding ourselves to are not actually the rules of this world, and the rules and powers of this world are far greater than we can imagine. Both Ging and Kite probably know about the Dark Continent, and Nanika is theorized to be from the Dark Continent itself, so it fits that two of these characters are the ones we see with broken abilities.

Yorknew is like a 9/10 throughout while Chimera Ant ranges from something like 6/10 all the way up to 11/10 (episode 135). The narrator moments also range from incredibly dull to really epic. Also this is very much on Togashi. In later arcs you get entire pages of nothing but text. Like, why not turn HxH into a LN already if you don't wanna come up with manga page layouts anymore 😅 (I think I just triggered a lot of people)

Kite is a hunter that hates taking life. That's why the restrictions of _random weapon_ and _weapon must be used or _*_kill someone with it_* makes his hatsu stronger. That is why when rolling a weapon, he says *bad spin* coz he has to use it to kill before getting rid of it or change to other weapon. But when battling Pitou, he got a *good spin* . I'm thinking that weapon is not used for killing. It could be the opposite (rebirth, or maybe soul transfer). 😊 Edit: Remember when Pitou told Gon that Kite can't be revived coz his soul isn't here anymore. 😮

In terms of how new kite came to be, your guess is as good as anybody's, but the most prevalent theory is that Kite's rolled weapon during the fight with Pitou allowed him to re-encarnate if he were to die during the battle, or smt along those lines. Gon has been really selfish in his friendship, thats the only thing i didnt like, and in the manga, when the OG Netero was fighting Meruem, he said " don't underestimate humanities capacity for evil" not evolution. I didn't like that they changed that.

Netero said 'evolution' in the manga, but the kanji chosen for the word had the meaning of 'malice'. That's extremely difficult and very clumsy to replicate in spoken speech, so the anime producers didn't try to include this additional meaning, but instead chose to convey it visually and with SFX.

Disagree on Gon and Kite. From experience it's the reactors who are suggested to watch ep. 1 of ed. '99 series and do so, who have a problem with Gon closeness to Kite not feeling justified enough, while those who don't watch it don't have this problem. And why would Gon attempt to hug Kite if their relation was never based on hugging and even in '99 they've seen each other for like just some hours? The emotional impact for Gon is based on Kite saving his life, on Kite being the missing link between him and Ging and then Kite being a mentor already in the Chimera arc.

Just a fun fact, Kite's nen ability never gave him bad rolls. The weapon says so itself. A perfect roll every time he used it.

This is just wrong. Kite obviously knew how to use each weapon he created. If the spins were always perfect the ability would be much weaker. The randomness is the restriction that makes each weapon so powerful.

@xXSamir44Xx the reasons why he said its a bad roll everytime he used the weapon its because he had a talking clown, doesnt like killing and he had to use those weapons to make it disappear. Ging even mention something in the line of, if he's resurrected if probably because of his weapon. But he wasnt sure because, yeah he never died to actually test it out. The randomness feature gave it a powerful twist and that is why it also gave good rolls everytime he used it. What's the probably of him getting a weapon that let him be reborn in that specific time?

I completely agree with you both. The pacing in this arc was undeniably poor, no sugarcoating needed. The Yorknew arc stands out as the best for me. Kurapika and Killua are among my favourite characters. Once the anime concludes, Kurapika will again take the spotlight, and the manga content is exceptionally intriguing. Here's hoping they'll eventually adapt it into anime. I love your content btw.

I'm not a huge Kurapika fan tbh but I've been glued to the Succession Battle arc! for the Chimera ant arc though I actually stopped watching HxH about a quarter of the way through the arc (I think the last episode I watched before picking it up again was Gon and Palm's date) because I got SO bored of it and couldn't fathom how people were saying it was peak anime (this was also before 131 came out) rewatched the anime from the beginning years later after being reminded of it because I was browsing the Shonen Jump app and actually finished it. Yorknew is my favorite arc of the anime, but I do have an immense love for the Phantom Troupe not only as the characters themselves but also from a writing standpoint, their entire existance and everything that happens to them is simultaneously evil and loyalty and tragedy and obsession. They're a villain Group that is getting slowly destroyed from within by their own power of friendship and that's such a fascinating thing to me.

Day 193 of telling Carlie and Ange that Hisoka isn't actually a pedo***** until they replay. He’s sexually attracted to power. And he doesn’t care if it’s coming from machi or gon. I don’t think Hisoka has a regular sex drive. I believe his whole existence is based on the drive to prove himself against powerful opponents - so his sex drive also manifests itself as attraction for power and potential. A pedo is a person who is attracted to children because they are children therefore I don't think he is a pedo Just treat him like a normal character and forget it 😅😅😅
