One thing I love about Luffy is that he doesn't understand anything about Nami's backstory. He doesn't even want or need to know anything. All he needed to hear was that Nami asked him for help. Luffy is the kind of guy that will help his friends no matter what without hesitation. You don't need to explain yourself to Luffy. You dont need to justify why you need his help. All you need to do is ask for it and he will do anything in his power to be there for you. Luffy is a real one.
@tarunupadhyay28212 ай бұрын
It's not even about asking for help from Luffy. Luffy magically knows what his friend in need wants. In the case of Nami, it was "help me". *Spoilers* In the case of Robin, it was "I want to live". In the case of Sanji, it was " I want to go back to Sunny". In the case of Momo, it was " I want to defeat Kaido". I think this is one of the main reasons people love Luffy as the MC.

The Thing is Luffy totally understands that Nami doesn't want anyone's help and is actively trying to shoulder the entire burden on her own, and that she wants to do everything by herself. So he just decides to not do anything and stay on the island, waiting for the moment that Nami herself comes to a realisation and ask him for help herself. What a Man. 😭 There are lots and lots of Luffy moments where you'll see just how beautifully his character is written, which is why when a certain portion of the fandom says there is no depth to Luffy, I just question their comprehension skills. But i can't actively blame them because unlike other characters, Luffy's writing is not explicitly shown on the surface and is relatively nuanced. So you really have to pay attention to him and his actions to get a grasp of his depth. (Ofcourse he is not the deepest character but he is not a simple one either) There are layers to him. 🙌🏻
@mdt567892 ай бұрын
I always like to point out how Oda gave Nami agency by having Luffy not help her until she asks for it. He makes it obvious how strong she's been through all these years, and that she has been fighting the hardest, and when she can't go through it all alone anymore, that's when she gets to ASK for help, not just be helped, she gets to make that decision and it is not taken away from her. She is not written as a Damsel in distress, she's written as a badass that realises she's at her limit.
@jacobjohnson40722 ай бұрын
Exactly! It sticks, too. There's an observation on that made by Mama Drawk of the Drawk Show: "Luffy forces the people he saves to take active roles in their salvation." He's not some knight in shining armor; if you want help, you have to help him help you.

My biggest complaint about the live action was that they changed the fact that the villagers knew about Nami's goal. Took away a lot of impact for me. There were changes that made sense, but then there were changes like this that I felt were completely unnecessary.
@RyzenShanks2 ай бұрын
Oda is involve in the story creation of the live action too. I guess they can't just borrow Oda to work more time for the live action.
@martinloss41712 ай бұрын
Well, my biggest complaint about the live action was that Bellemere REALLY sacrificed herself. In the Anime the bluff worked but she stopped Arlong and said that they money is for their kids. In the Live-Action Arlong just found the kids. Of course Bellemere sacrificed herself too but it had way less emotional impact. Also the message from Bellemere about "don't say that we are not a familiy" (when the slapped kid Nami) from the previous episode was totally ignored which was the most important point of the backstory. This was also completely unnecessary.
@ZarathosDaimaoh2 ай бұрын
Yeah minus the key emotional scenes from the actors , especially obviously Nami's , and the visuals , this is the arc and part i found quite weak in the LA . The handling of Bellemere , Nojiko , and the villagers did not sit well with me . Of course i completely understand it being a hit with people that did not watch the anime , nor read the manga , it is still such a powerful moment . But any comparison here destroys the LA
@Falko-wer2 ай бұрын
Well, you need time to set the story up, and the flashbacks are what sells the moment. The live-action just didn't have the time, that's why that moment feels too rushed for me in the live action. Also, I thought the running back and forth was really weird for that. Why did they not rather cut the Arlong-Nami interaction? it's basically just: "I can't believe you betrayed me!" - "Well, ... I am the villain of this arc..." *Nami runs back to the villages*.
@ZarathosDaimaoh2 ай бұрын
@@Falko-wer yes and no ... some choices like showing the villagers , Nojiko and Gen actively not knowing about Nami , took about as much air time , with new different scenes , than just showing that they knew . In some cases it was more artistic licence and liberties than time constraint

Luffy's simple-mindedness is just so wholesome. Like throughout the arc, he was like; "This food is mine!" "There are seven of those warlords? Cool!" "Do fishmen look like this?" "Oh, so those are Fishmen." "That pinwheel on that guy's hat looks cool!" ...and even after he saw Nami's breakdown, he is still simple-minded but with a different tone; "Yes you told me to leave" "Of course I will!" "Which one of you is Arlong?" Zoro knows something's up with Nami since the beginning of the arc. Usopp and Sanji heard the backstory. But the main reason for Luffy to go find and fight the fishman who he doesnt even know what he looks like is just because he saw Nami crying and asks for help

You nailed it about Arlong being different from the other opposing captains they’ve faced so far. He genuinely cares about his crew of fishmen. Their brotherhood and unity gives a different feel from the other crews the Strawhats have fought in the East Blue. And I like that you picked up on the fact that Nami just doesn’t want anyone to get hurt anymore, both the village and the Strawhats. That’s something that always gets me, watching little Nami asking Gen to stop trying to save her so no one else will die, and then her seeing the village heading off to their deaths because Arlong reneged on his deal with her. It’s the one of the biggest changes from the live action that I missed the most (that and Hachi).

This arc is so important to me, because I love and understand nami in different level, up until now. Her character is not perfect, but I like the way it is. I don't justify some of her actions (being physical) but I completely understand her stress level and I'm worried she might get high blood or something😭 She has been with the crew for a few weeks? (From start til arlong park) I'm not sure anymore but she smiled genuinely with them and she even cared about them. And her root about obsession with money is so clear, because it's salvation for her. She could've be with bellemere if only they have enough money, they all could've be free from arlong pirates if they all have money. And with money, they can buy necessary things that they need to stay alive and well during sailing (as pirate crew) Nami is not perfect, that's why I love her as a character. She might be not the strongest female character here, but she do her best as the navigator of the crew and as a support fighter that other people might not appreciate, but I do. Each straw hats are not perfect, but they fill each other's weaknesses that's why everything goes well for them. That's their dynamic, that's their teamwork. Each one of them plays their roles, and no one should ever invalidate or count the things they do for the crew.

The best part about the "help me" scene is that luffy didn't pay attention to when Nojiko was talking about Nami's past. So he had no idea why she did what she did and he didn't need to. All he knew was that somebody named Arlong made her cry. Plus he gave his most prized possession to a thief who already stole from him. That didn't matter to him either. The walk to arlong park is one of those moments where a lot of people, myself included, realized that One Piece is truly something special. Episode 37 originally aired back in the year 2000 and almost 25 years later it still holds up
@samfisher66062 ай бұрын
God the "help me" is so much better in the manga/anime than in the live action. I love it in the live action but there are elements missing that just make it better. Nojiko and the village knowing about Nami's true motive for working with Arlong in the manga and Nami trying to put on a brave face to tell the villagers that she'll get the money back make her breakdown so much more impactful. So having those elements makes Nami feel more desperate. And while it's hard to watch Nami stab herself, it really feels like a mutilation in the anime and manga.

These episodes are generally the ones where anyone that was still on the fence about continuing the daunting journey through the OP anime (or manga readers too) decide they're in it for the long haul. Nami's backstory was an emotional home run, and Luffy leading Zoro, Sanji, and Ussop to settle things gives you chills. Even Johnny and Yosaku were moved to take action and kept the villagers from throwing themselves into a meat grinder when they knew there were others on the way that had a much better chance of success. As far as your crews, I hope nobody gets too heated about their favorites being excluded in the comments. They're your crews, based on your favorites at this point in the show. You'll likely want to add a few slots as the total list of characters gets much larger over the arcs, and perhaps even another antagonist slot or two or else recency bias will likely take over, since Oda's so damn good at what he does with what's going on currently in the story.

And to think that Bellemere's death got the censored edit. Yet, fucking god-tier episodes.

i find this scene so much better in the anime. In the anime all hope was lost, villagers were going to die soon for nami, which wasnt a thing in the LA. Along with lots of other small things. although emily (the actor for nami) did do a good job. The main thing i disliked about the LA adoption of this arc was how much they butchered the villagers. I get it was kinda for time purposes.

The live action version did the "Luffy...help me" and the straw hat gang's "let's go" scene pretty much scene-by-scene. Iconic moments for manga readers and the live action was well received because they got these key moments just right.

luffy is the kind of person who will do anything for his friends and he sees through them but as long as they dont tell them what they really want he wont do anything he is forcing everyone to be honest with themselves and with him in order for him to be able to help them, you can see how he was just waiting for nami to ask for help and didnt do much before that because he didnt know what was really going on.
