Well things haven't exactly improved a great deal in two years since. ETH has steadied us a bit, and we've won a trophy at least, but we're miles behind Oil FC. Unfortunately we're stuttering over the line in the PL. Too many tight victories (although we had a lot of those in the 2000/01 season too), and missing a goalscorer, a backup CB, better creative midfielder, and we probably need a better keeper than de Gea. More than anything, we need players with the desire to bleed for the badge, which I think is unlikely with this lot. The arrogance of modern footballers probably stops them from viewing videos of the great team performances of old. Boy could the current United players do with taking a leaf out of the book of Fergie. People blame his presence, but these are supposed to be professionals. If you can't handle the pressure, then bog off somewhere else!

@@michaeljordan310 Ronaldo didn't play for United as he used to in his first spell at the club, it was all about him, hence the strop he had about the manager and club before he left. He might have been right about a lot of things, but he can't act like he's bigger than the manager and club. His attitude at times was terrible, totally different to the 2006-09 period when we were flying. He's not always going to be the main man at 37. He wasn't prepared to change to fit the style ETH wants, so he had to go. I honestly wish it had worked out though.

Teddy Sheringham showed what a top class striker he was during this season. It was unfathomable that he'd be top scorer as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers player of the year awards after the previous two seasons where his appearances and goals were quite limited. Boy how United could do with Fergie's knack of finding top class goalscorers right now. Cantona, Cole, Yorke, Teddy, Ole, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ronaldo, Berbatov, Chicharito, Van Persie, the list is just top drawer all the way. Nowadays, they have.... Rashford. And that's it. Even Jose managed to get a solid season out of Ibrahimovic during his short tenure. It's an absolute must-have over the summer. They can't keep relying on scoring one goal to win a game.

@@FootkerSnooball 'Berbaflop', who won two titles with the club, including the 08/09 one where his goals were hugely significant. I didn't deliberately forget Hughes. I didn't mention Tevez or McClair either, or even Best, Charlton, Law, and Pearson, but could have done. My point was that United have usually had decent or great goalscorers, but lack them now.
@FootkerSnooball Жыл бұрын
@@Nightopian1982 JohnnyEvans has 3 PL title's. DavidMay won back-to-back PL title's and has kept 4 cup final clean sheets in 4 ManUtd wins where he played the entire matches (albeit 2 Shield's, but 2 FAcups vs Liverpool 96 & Newcastle 99) and understandably no one talks about him but he still had a better ManUtd career than Berbatov. Best, Charlton & Law wouldn't have made sense because you were talking about Ferguson signings. But yeah you should've said Tevez instead of Berba and ManUtd should've not got Berba so Tevez would've stayed and all the shitty horrible things that happened between the end of 2008/09 (apart from winning PL which should've been confirmed way before it was anyway) to 2012, wouldn't have. The trophies & records buying Berba cost ManUtd....and Tevez scored more "important goals" in only 2 years at ManUtd than Berbatov did in double the time. Berba may have scored a few seemingly important goals in his first season at ManUtd vs low teams like Middlesbrough & Newcastle who both got relegated (and if someone else was on the pitch instead of him they would've scored instead anyway) but he had a poor ManUtd career really. Most players who played under Ferguson for ManUtd for at least 4 years achieved at least 2 out of 3 of the following things. Win back-to-back PL's Win the FAcup Win the ChampionsLeague Some achieved 2 or all 3 after just 2 seasons. Berba is in a tiny group of players who you will struggle to think of others alongside him who also didn't achieve any of those things. Berbatov scored ONE goal against a Top5 team in his entire ManUtd career in major domestic competitions. Berbatov scored in only THREE ChampionsLeague games for ManUtd (NONE in knockouts) and went 3 whole years without a CL goal from late 2008 to late 2011. He was awful at coming off the bench when his team need to score, worse than ANY forward who was considered at least half a success at ManUtd under Ferguson. His lame pen pass to TimHoward vs Everton 2009 FAcup semi-final...his lame performance when he came on in CL final that year where he had bad shots & poor passes at a time of need, his really bad season 2009/10 which contributed in just missing out on the record 4 PL's in a row especially after his misses vs Chelsea he could've made it 2-2 to keep ManUtd above Chelsea & then Blackburn next game similar misses finished 0-0 lost by 1 point when Rooney had put ManUtd in a great position but was injured Berba was only asked to deliver for 1of those games, his misses in virtual FAcup final vs ManCity in 2011 at 0-0 he cost ManUtd at least 2 FAcups. He did also play the whole game vs 3rd tier Leeds in 3rd round 2009/10 I know good players also did but again he can't produce something when it actually matters more. If Berbatov was a success at ManUtd then Chelsea who weren't as good nor anywhere near as consistent as ManUtd wouldn't have won no fewer PL's than ManUtd from 2009/10 to 2011/12 despite ManUtd accumulating 33 PL pts more than Chelsea in the same period (which wasn't in the slightest bit flattering either) and Chelsea in the same period also won a CL when again ManUtd were better overall in the competition but didn't win in that time Chelsea also won 2 FAcup's to ManUtd's none (3 to nil if you count the end of Berbatov's first season where ManUtd would've beaten Chelsea as Ronaldo was unplayable by now and ManUtd wanted to get Chelsea back for 2007 final and were way better than Chelsea and proved it in the 3-0 Jan2009 where Ronaldo also had goal wrongly disallowed but they still couldn't handle him he played part in multiple goals and Chelsea's full strength team only just beat a depleted Everton when a stronger Everton only knocked out ManUtd B-team without Ronaldo, Rooney, VanDerSar, Fletcher, Carrick & Nani on pens when Berba missed & Webb also failed to give ManUtd a pen when Welbeck was fouled in the box by Jagielka, but still TimCahill missed thejr first pen when he usually was reliable for them them Berbs handed the confidence straight back to Everton with that awful pen it didn't get to Tevez who I'm sure would've been 5th he should've been in the 1st 2 like CL final 07/08 & the Shield 08 & LeagueCup final 08/09) it doesn't sit well with me that many ManUtd legends finished their career's without an FAcup the likes of Ferdinand, Vidic, VanDerSar, Evra in particular but also ParkJiSung & Nani both deserved to complete the set when you look at the fact Chelsea got to by fluking ChampionsLeague. Yeah ManUtd won things in a much better style winning CL in invincible style went record number of CL games unbeaten (that still hasn't been equalled yet) whilst 3 peating in the PL and reaching all 4 CL finals under Ferguson by being unbeaten in the competition until at least the final winning 2 unbeaten and being by far tournament top scorers in 98/99 as well winning PL every time they made the CL final but Chelsea somehow have the same number of CL's in the CL era and yeah that's down a bit to luck, decisions and Abramovic's money but ManUtd are a rich club and had the best team when Berbatov arrived it slowly went downhill after signing him and at least Chelsea had some big game players that got the most out of what they had where as Berbatov was the opposite. Another reason I brought up Hughes was because it's players like him that helped Ferguson and helped make ManUtd go on to dominate because ManUtd were scrapping around while Hughes played for a while a mid-table team but he helped them win some trophies when not the powerhouse they became and from 1989/90 ManUtd pretty much won something every year until the year Hughes left but still put ManUtd in good stead and 1991/92 to 2012/13 finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Obviously Cantona & the whole of the first PL winners played a big role but also these players were talanted but also worked hard like later one's the ClassOf92 the treble winners as well as the successful players in the time Rooney was at the club. Berba I thought would be a good signing I don't blame Ferguson but it turned out to be a horrific signing also ManUtd would've already sold Berba after 2 seasons a bit like Veron if any big club were willing to pay a decent amount for him but no one wanted him after 2009/10 including Spurs who became better without him and qualified for ChampionsLeague. The few players that didn't achieve any of those 3 feats aside from Berba were pretty much players from youth team who still did well considering their age&price like Evans, Welbeck, Rafael hence why they lasted longer therefore achieved it bit more (A.Valencia wasn't from youth team but again he was cheaper and no one thinks of him as an amazing player anyway but at least he did better than Berba in 09/10 for his position he did his job better than Berba did his etc...) Berba was record signing, obviously talanted and it annoys me he seems to think of himself as such a great player and a ManUtd legend when I would've liked the latter to have been the case but he absolutely is NOT.

@@FootkerSnooball I can't be arsed to read that entire essay you've written there (also, David May? He was a defender, so equating his contribution with a striker's is a bit pointless), but I'll say that most United fans would not consider Berbatov a 'flop', especially when you think of a number of other signings Fergie and other bosses made over the years (Forlan, Poborsky, Djemba-Djemba, Fortune, Veron, Kleberson, Smith, Pogba, Lukaku, Martial to name some - and that's not counting the poor free or loan signings like Falcao, Sanchez and Owen, not to mention other clubs' duff strikers). I never called Berbatov a legend, and I don't see anything suggesting he thinks that himself. He was a very unassuming, quiet individual, unlike players like Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic, where there's no hiding the arrogance. Your comment appears to be pulling out individual moments where you believe he was terrible, and as for saying 'anyone could have scored some of the goals he did', well you could probably say that about a host of striker's goals over the years. It's total speculation, and anyway, goals are goals buddy. For the record, I'm not saying he's among the best strikers United have ever had, but to say he's a flop is ludicrous (48 goals in 108 appearances is not a flop). He struggled a bit in 2009/10, but got three hat-tricks (including the first against Liverpool in over sixty years) the following season and finished PL top scorer. Berba's ability as a forward wasn't just his goalscoring either, he was a quality foil for players like Rooney and Tevez - scoring important goals during 2008/09 too - which was actually quoted as part of the reason Fergie signed him. Anyway, it's late, and I'm not getting into another long-winded back and forth disagreement with someone on here about past players, especially if it's going to involve extremely long replies, so I'm just going to say I respect you have a different opinion, even if I don't actually agree with it.
@FootkerSnooball Жыл бұрын
@@Nightopian1982 There's nothing to disagree with as I'm pointing out facts. I know everything he did & didn't do. You also started talking about POST-Ferguson signings. Sure looking at ManUtd now you could go back and look at some highlights of some skills Berba did that he pulled off and also see that he won a few things and think from that he was a success but he still did much worse than most players under FERGUSON for at least 4 years. Don't know why you're bringing up free transfers like MichaelOwen although even he scored a winner vs City which gave the team a big boost & got an away hatrick in the CL (all of Berbatov's hatricks were at home) he also scored in a cup final for ManUtd I know Berba played a part in the goal but as we've seen with Berba's failure to finish even easier chances Owen still had to score it & Rooney scored the winner coming off the bench, the expectation wasn't big with Owen he was more of a threat when he was young with pace and he is already older than Berba but he'd been at a bigger stage since an earlier age as well. The likes of Veron & Poborsky were only in the team for a year & a half/2years and therefore are also N/A. But Veron was a midfielder & even in the short time he was at ManUtd still scored against Arsenal in a must-win game when ManUtd were behind them in the 2002/03 title race went towards winning it, Poborsky another midfielder had some useful performances like away to Arsenal 96/97 he played a part in Solskjaer's goal in a 1-2 win when ManUtd were without Cantona. It was actually a mistake selling Poborsky mid-season 97/98 because ManUtd had many injury problems that year and were forced to bring on the likes of BenThornley instead. Poborsky was at least better backup than that but ManUtd were top of the PL at the time and Ferguson must've got a decent offer for him like with Veron as soon as someone puts a good offer for a player that isn't in your first team plans you sell and no one put that bid in for Berbatov hence why his valuation plummeted right down to near zero that Fulham signed him which is more his level he can do some skills & stuff & theor fans will appreciate that more but results aren't so important like Matt LeTissier at Southampton just don't get relegated that's all that matters. ManUtd got v.Persie and he was actually a proper 'top scorer' scoring in many games against anyone like Hughes, Cantona, Solskjaer, Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, v.Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Rooney etc... In Berbatov's 4 years he didn't play every time against the closest title challenger but only because after a bit Fergie realised he wasn't good enough in those games and ManUtd lost 2 title races and the other 2 were made much more difficult all because of a poor record vs the closest title challenger (1 win, 7 losses). The 1 win was at home to Chelsea 10/11 because Berba didn't play and then ManUtd won by 9pts but had Chelsea won they would've been level on pts possibly have the advantage with 2 games left like City had the following season to win on GD. v.Nistelrooy was unlucky to have only achieved 1 of the 3 feats that are common achievements under Ferguson for at least 4 years (FAcup) but he was in a weaker ManUtd team than Berbatov and also v.Nistelrooy did his job scored in so many games was PL & CL top scorer many times he won FAcup & actually won ManUtd a PL (not only scoring in 11 games luckily getting called top scorer like Berbatov in 10/11 when even there J.Hernandez was ManUtd's most important forward that season & scored in more games & including vs better opposition) and v.Nistelrooy was unlucky in CL 01/02 away goals SF exit when Beckham missed the latter season because Deportivo broke his metatarsal and 02/03 unlucky to play probably the best RealMadrid team on paper in QF the final might've been alright a 1-off game but QF too early topped both groups convincingly didn't deserve RMadrid QF & he still scored multiple goals in that tie...and 03/04 V.Nistelrooy would've won CL had Scholes not had his 2nd goal disallowed for offside when played onside by 4 Porto players the route from QF to final is no wonder Porto went on to win it. Even 04/05 exit in L16 by ACmilan 2-0 on aggregate he was still tournament top scorer with all his goals in the group stage. Tevez was City's top scorer in 09/10 & 10/11 he continued to score against Chelsea for them which helped ManUtd's title races in 09/10 & 10/11 he would've been better than Berbatov at ManUtd those years and Tevez 07/08 was way better than Berbatov 10/11. Tevez 08/09 was better than Berbatov 08/09 Tevez was probably annoyed with Ferguson because he may have felt Berbatov should've earned his games and the front 3 of Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez 07/08 wasn't broke so didn't need fixing although Ronaldo was definitely gonna leave end of 08/09 I understand Ferguson had to get someone else and you're not just gonna not play a record signing Tevez would've been guaranteed more starts in 09/10 but he just got annoyed because he was treated the worst that season out of the 4 because Ronaldo would fuss even when he started & was only taken off sensibly for rest with important fixtures coming up and would still have a tantrum, Rooney has to play he's so important in similar ways to Tevez but will be a bit more played in the bigger games than Tevez & Berba was the new record signing so Tevez got annoyed but he would come on from the bench and score big goals straightaway like Porto CL QF & Wigan at 1-0 to win 1-2 towards end of the PL season. Can't blame Ferguson because he may have thought Tevez would be a bit like Solskjaer who was also very effective valuable player but so often the easier option to choose to be the sub. You're reading too much into the number of goals Berba scored and not the number of games nor the number of important games he scored in. Did I want Berbatov to score just ONE vs Blackburn away 09/10 more than ANY of his 5 vs Blackburn in the next PL match vs Blackburn 10/11 that were all irrelevant?... YES. Scores 5 in a game ManUtd win if you take out his goals (the record was already lost by then anyway) and then he does it again as soon as there's an important game like ManCity at Wembley again NO GOALS ManUtd narrowly lose. Also Liverpool averaged 7th from 2009/10 to 2012/13 (7th,6th,8th,7th) it was a weak Liverpool at OldTrafford and that was his main ManUtd highlight and the fact people always have to mention it with him tells you he wasn't good enough. Successful ManUtd players you could point out loads of things and not always the same things. AndyCole for example scored hatricks & also 5 in 1 game, he also scored away hatricks, he also won the treble, he won another double and a couple of other PL's & loads of other things you could talk about. You could talk about how he broke his legs at the start of 96/97 and still finished that season with more important contributions than nearly all of Berba's seasons at ManUtd and that's a striker who used to be criticised for how many chances he needed to score.
